Visited 19th May for dinner with my wife. One of the things that struck us as we walked in, was how gloomy the place was. Café Rouge are supposed to be face-lifting their restaurants this one certainly needs a makeover as it looked very tired. The far end of the restaurant was light and bright near to large windows but non of the tables were set and it looked like a bar area in a sub-average city pub so we sat near the gloomy street end. Once seated the friendly staff looked after our needs and we soon had a bottle of wine and menus and then someone put some lights on, making it a little more welcoming but it still was gloomy. Once ordered our starters arrived in a timely manner as did the mains, both courses were tasty and of a good standard we have come to expect from Café Rouge. The visit was very disappointing as the manager and his staff were chatty, friendly and warm but the place itself is not very nice at all. If in York again in the future we will certainly look in to see if it has been upgraded but if not I am afraid we won't be stopping as there are so many nice places to eat nearby.
