Description: With a combination of delicious food, great wines and a real ambience, Café Rouge has embodied the style and je ne sais quoi of French dining since it opened way back in 1989. Now with over 90 sites across the country it's just the place to mull over the morning papers with a cafe au lait and a croissant, pop in for a spot of lunch, share a post-work drink or relax over an evening meal. The menu covers a range of French classics from croques and baguettes, ideal for a quick and easy snack, to more substantial fare such as steak frites and boeuf bourguignon. Likewise, the wines are predominately French; many made by lesser known producers, and provide the perfect accompaniment to the food on offer. If it's been a while since you've paid a visit, the team think you'll be surprised by how much you've missed them. No hassle, no rush, no skinny- decaff-double-shot-to-go, just a vibrant atmosphere that moves with your moods throughout the day.

Visited 19th May for dinner with my wife. One of the things that struck us as we walked in, was how gloomy the place was. Café Rouge are supposed to be face-lifting their restaurants this one certainly needs a makeover as it looked very tired. The far end of the restaurant was light and bright near to large windows but non of the tables were set and it looked like a bar area in a sub-average city pub so we sat near the gloomy street end. Once seated the friendly staff looked after our needs and we soon had a bottle of wine and menus and then someone put some lights on, making it a little more welcoming but it still was gloomy. Once ordered our starters arrived in a timely manner as did the mains, both courses were tasty and of a good standard we have come to expect from Café Rouge. The visit was very disappointing as the manager and his staff were chatty, friendly and warm but the place itself is not very nice at all. If in York again in the future we will certainly look in to see if it has been upgraded but if not I am afraid we won't be stopping as there are so many nice places to eat nearby.

Busy day in York resulted in trying to find a not too busy restaurant for a late supper.A very helpful young waiter served us throughout and we had a very good meal at reasonable cost.

It was raining, we needed coffee and and cake. This cafe was close so in we went. It took four minutes to be seated, another ten to be served.

We ordered a latte and a coffee without milk. We got the latte and a coffee with milk, it took ten minutes for the replacement black coffee to arrive. The so called "carrot cake" was certainly a slice and not any bigger and was dry.....yuk. Personally I think 'twas the day before's offering

The waitresses did not have time to make us feel at home, and were rushing around. We did not finish what labelled coffee and cake as it was not good.

We asked for the bill....that took another 8 minutes to arrive, there was no one around to take the payment so we asked another customer to keep an eye on the cash which we put by the till

All in all a really not nice experience. I did use the Cafe Rouge feedback page on their website and I got a thanks for the report which will be passed on but no hint of an apology

Not somewhere we would choose to visit again

Excellent food with friendly staff; very reasonable cost. It's far roomier than it looks from the front and after stopping for a coffee and superb cake we went back the next day for a proper meal - quality and service were impressive.

Called in one lunchtime while visiting york for the races. Ordered a few dishes, salad breads and humous, garlic prawns and pate and shared them all. There was no food left..... Everything was cooked to perfection. Can't understand why the place was so quiet.
