Stayed here and was pleasantly surprised! Room was lovely, twin beds very comfy with high quality bedding etc and a lovely bathroom. Tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits and breakfast was fantastic-full english and a choice of cereals. Five mins from station, five mins from York and over the road from Sainsburys for anything you may forget. Manager James was friendly and informative. Will definitely be back xx

Stayed for two nights
Positives are that it has parking for the rooms, easy access into the centre of york and has decent rates for the area.
The negatives depend on which room you get. Unfortunately if you like a good sleep and a shower then avoid the room at the front. badly fitting single glazed windows mean the room is both drafty and noisy which means you are woken up every time an ambulance or other emergency vehicle goes past. Also a roll top bath with hand held shower may look nice it is totally impractical.
Hosts were friendly and welcoming.
Breakfast was large and well cooked only spoilt by only having toast available on cheap white sliced bread.
Would recommend but only if not in room over looking the front.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms over looking the busy main road

Didnt sleep over just popped in for a couple of bevvies but had to say my piece that there arent many olde worldy pubs like this anymore. Friendly staff, nice mix of locals and tourists who are happy to spend time chatting with you.
Couple of really well kept real ales on tap too.
Wish I had a local like this.

If like us, you are experienced business and leisure travellers and prefer pub/inn accomodation in preference to sterile chain hotels then this is the perfect place to stay in York, close to Micklegate and access to everything. We stayed in room 1, (no snorer next door), room was refurbed, clean and a very comfy bed, with piping hot water on tap. Tea, cofffee, hairdryer etc. provided. Hosts excellent, key for late access, breakfast served at our table and any combination of the fried stuff catered for, along with cereals and individual jugs of orange juice and cold milk on your table. Great. Struggling to comprehend the comments of previous review, maybe a sterile chain would suit her better. We will definitely stay at Bay Horse again.

Friendly Yorkshire welcome from James who carried our bags, showed us to our room cooked and served breakfast..
Stayed in room 1 which was clean, warm, newly furnished with all the character you would expect from a 300 year old + property. The bed was comfortable and we slept like a log with minimal noise considering the b&b is on the main road.
5/5 for value, we saw on Laterooms, used our nobbles, phoned DIRECT and saved £20 a night.
Ref previous review this is a pub, its called the Bay Horse the clue is in the name, NOT a hotel.
It has its priorities spot on. Bed...breakfast..character....great hospitality....value. You'll pay double at Premier Inn York and probably 3 times as much at a hotel.
Your priority should be to decipher between pub/b&b/hotel then you won't have cause to whinge.

One can't help but feel that this hotel has it's priorities a bit wrong...
It is a beautiful room, to be sure.
Not much else going for it.

The heating is on when it wants to be, there are no toiletries to speak of (unless you count the tiny round soap that was placed on the sink on arrival.) though it does have an abundance of fresh towels on the heated towel rail though, which is the most constant and warm thing in the place!!!

Although the staff are friendly, it is not a place where customer service is the priority, there is a definite air of customers being squeezed into the owners lives as suits...
e.g breakfast is served from 9 a.m only, I had to request it for 8.30 (having come down at 8.15 to a locked pub on my first morning) or the gentleman would not have been 'up' as he himself put it to me.
The worst thing was when I asked for coffee and was brought a steel beaker of hot water to pour my provided sachets of 'instant coffee' into.
It had not occurred that I meant fresh coffee...
Or that when I asked for honey he might have replied something other than 'again, not something I get asked for, love'.

Nice.

Be warned: There is a permanent resident in Room 2 whose snoring is comparable to a combine harvester. When the person next door moves the whole bed in Room 1 shakes as though someone had jumped on it.
So don't book Room 1, if you can help it.

It's all well and good them being nice people but they are running a business in the end and I'm sorry but you add all this to a very warm not exactly hot shower and the money you spend is a complete let down.

Premier inn would give you a better quality room for less money, just not as pretty and period. So again it's about priorities.

If you are working and want a good nights kip, early breakfast and reliable hot shower, this is not the place to stay.
