Utterly unique, very rustic bar, with the most excellent food Yorkshire has to offer. If you want poncy, don't come here but if you want fantastic English food and drinks in a congenial atmostphere, you've found your niche. The platters are sensational and the steak pie the best l have tasted-and unless you are a ganet, it's big enough for 2. Downstairs is the shop where the produce can be purchased to take home.

“Lush!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

This was our first visit to The House of the Trembling Madness and as soon as we discovered the place we instantly fell in love with it.
We'd gone away to York for the night and visited both that evening and the next afternoon for lunch. (We couldn't resist!)
The place is hidden away at the top of a great offy and the bar itself has a lush selection of world beers and ales and a rustic menu that suits the theme of the place down to the ground!
I opted for a pint of award winning chocolate stout which didn't disappoint, alongside a cheese and cauliflower soup, whilst my partner got a pint of Brooklyn & a cheese & bread board. The place is really busy so waiting for a table is to be expected when you visit, it's also quite small too but respect to the guy working his socks off behind the bar cooking & washing up, it's quite compact behind there to say the least. We were told there would be a wait for our food as he cooked everything order by order which was fair enough. We didn't have to wait too long though however you don't really notice the time in this place anywhoo.

Negatives: I know this place has had some bad reviews and I did kind of see where the last one came from as when our food was brought to our table and we were asked whos was whos when we said that we were sharing both the guy's response to us was a bit 'huh'. That's the only negative I can think of and if anything highlights that this is a completely honest review!

We'll definitely be returning!

“what a cosy little find”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

I loved the cosy feeling this pub gave us, the old feeling in the place. We both had stew which was wonderful and plentiful and needed for such a cold night.
The only thing was it was hard to find as you have to go through the beer shop to get to the bar, and they only had a very limited choice of real ales on but what they had was very good.
