“Extremely basic rooms in a run down building”
Reviewed July 8, 2010

Stayed just one night with my teenage son in a twin room. Once past the foyer of the hotel, you quickly see that this is a pretty run down hotel in a down-at-heel building. Lifts to upper floors are tiny, corridors cramped, narrow and dingy - with a number of steps to be negotiated along the way. The room itself was basic. Bed sheets were clean but mattresses thin and unsupportive and did not have any hygenic cover under the sheets i.e. your sheet sits straight on top of a dirty mattress. The bathroom had a sink and shower but no bath. The shower let out a miserable trickle of water. Bath towels were the size of hand towels - well worn and scratchy. Noise travelled along the corridors as guests came and went and we were disturbed early in the morning by recycling and waste bins being emptied just under our bedroom window. In the morning, cleaning staff knocked before 9 to see if we had vacated the room and pushed passed us without consideration once we were trying to leave the hotel. All a great shame because the location is good. But for the same money I would recommend you look instead at Travel Lodge or Premier Inn just down the road - both looked a good deal smarter.

We read the reviews on trip advisor so half expected this hotel to be shabby and not up to much but seeing as we had booked it ages ago without reading the reviews first we still decided to give it a try!! However not only did they reckon we hadn't already paid when we arrived at reception, when we had!! we then entered the stairwell where it all became pretty clear!!!the stairs/decor was drab and dark.On entering the room itself well all I can say is that a prison cell would probably be better equipped and cleaner! The room was like a servants quarters!!tiny,a skylight window which was falling apart and broken,no curtains to block out light,a tv hanging off the wall, a carpet that would be better placed in a stable, the dirtiness of it ,oh and the fact it hadn't been hoovered either as this mysterious white powder was next to the bed!!the bathroom wasn't bad however outside the bathroom door there were smear marks of which i do not even want to say what they were!!the whole wall areas were touched up with blobs of paint where marks had obviously been!
At least the bedding was clean although alas the bed squeaked even when you moved a toe!!As it was late when we checked in we stayed in that room for the night and complained the next morning, told the staff and they said they would let us change room!!maybe they are used to people changing rooms!!the staff were in fact accomodating and moved our bags to our new room whilst we were out!!On entering our new room it was much bigger, had curtains and a blind.the carpet was a bit cleaner, bathroom ,had a few hairs though and at least the bed didnt squeak and there were no strange marks on the walls ,however still patched up paintwork! This experience has put us off ever staying in this chain of hotels again. They need to seriously think about the money they are charging for squallor!

We stayed at the Ibis 29/6 - 2/7 .

We have stayed in hotels which professed to be 3* and have not been as good as this.
Our double bedroom was clean with TV, kettle and bathroom with a large walk in shower. We were also surprised to have the towels changed daily. (It would be good however to have perhaps one hand towel). We had no problems sleeping and did not have a squeaky bed!

Breakfast was brilliant with a wide selection of cereals, hot food and rolls/bread/pastries.

It was a five minute walk into town and ten to the railway station which suited us perfectly. We were also able to leave our luggage at the hotel while we spent our last day sightseeing.

All in all, good value for money and woud certainly stay again.

Booked using release travel- beware of this company they stated it was a 3* hotel but in actual fact is a 2*. on arrival the check in girl was rude, our room was small, basic and in desperate need of make over. The carpet was worn, filthy and we had problems with our tv, air con and bathroom light.the hallways were dark and dingy. Location was good as the centre was a 5 minute walk away.

Stayed here 28/06/10 till 30/06/10

The boss [wife] surprised me with a superbreak in York. £190 for 2 nights B&B and train tickets from Dundee to York.
We arrived at the Ibis and were promptly checked in. However it was only later that we realised, that trying to ring for room service would be a problem without a phone in the room !!
The room [223] was about the same size as a twin room in any 3 star hotel in Spain. Clean. Towels in the bathroom, and a novelty, NO bath but a walk in shower. Result !!
Now the beds. Basically 2 thick lumps of wood with a mattress on top. Nice firm bed if you want one of them. However. As soon as you place a part of your body on the bed, it starts to creak. and forget moving them together to form a double. They do not move. The mattress will, but not the base. Was woken up frequently during the night by either myself or my wife turning round, and the bed moaning and groaning.
NOISE - Apart from a few selfish people who insisted on slamming the doors, didnt hear a thing from other guests.
MEALS - We were on a B&B basis so of course went down for breakfast [I'm a Yorkshiremen and the wife is a Scot. We pay for something, we are definately going to use it].
We both enjoyed our breakfastsand the hotel did not skimp on the ingredients. They say it is all you can eat, and by golly it was. The cook was always out checking stuff and topping up / replacing items. The Croissants however were burnt on the bottom.
We didnt eat any other meals in the hotel so cant comment on prices, same with the drinks we prefered to go to the bar next to the Mickelgate, which did meals and cheap beer.
As for location it is ideally placed for the Railway station and the Railway Museum. Also a short walk into the centre of the City.

Would we use this hotel again ?? Yes !!!

But a request to the management change the beds.

My girlfriend and I often stay in York hotels and this was the first time we tried the Ibis. Although we rarely go this 'budget', it was all that was available at short notice and was a very decent price. People...this is a cheap hotel...and while there are certainly better cheap hotels than this one, it is not that bad, and certainly doesn't merit the hysteria in some of these reviews!

The car park was a little cramped though I managed to manouevre a Ford S-Max into a decent space quite late in the day. Check in was extremely speedy and efficiient, despite the fact that we and some people before us were desperate to see an England game.

The room was small, and clean, except for a hair in the bed. There were certainly none of the problems others say they encountered. Carpets were clean and the staff were friendly and gave good service.

This is a cheap hotel near York city centre. Yes there were a few stag parties and so on but they gave us no bother. The bar was open late and we enjoyed a nightcap or two in the company of Sebastien, a comically surly and depressive French barman whose heart eventually melted as he realised how entertaining he was.

Despite having to leave our room at 3 AM to perform an emergency cleansing operation in a kitchen some miles away, we slept like tops and everything as comfortable and just so.

Oh...except for the water temperature in the shower. That was a bit rubbish to be fair. But who cares. It was cheap as chips and you have to have a sense of humour at this end of the market. I would recommend this hotel to a friend, but only if it was the sort of friend that sometimes got on my nerves. We all have one. Seriously though, if you're looking for no frills near town, this isn't so bad.

My wife and I spent two nights at this hotel and were unimpressed with the experience. The receptionist was friendly but as we made our way to our room the corridors were strewn with dirty washing and trays of half eaten food. Our sparse room had squeaky floor boards, badly touched up paint on the walls and a stained carpet. We had a tiny bath, the water pressure was so low it took about 20 minutes to fill and the plug leaked so the water ran out again. The hot breakfast consisted of bacon, sausage, scrambled egg and beans and on our second day the scrambled egg ran out. There was no proper vegetatian option. Coffee, tea, toast, croissants etc were fine. The free car parking was not available as the same cars occupied the spaces for the whole of our stay. Whilst checking out another guest was complainig to the receptionist about rubbish under her bed and the general cleanliness of her room.
