“Good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

Good value for money hotel- we did have a reduced rate via a hotel booking site. It is basic but with a comfortable bed, clean, the reception staff were pleansant and efficient and the location is convenient for the city centre and the various tourist attractions. We stayed just one night but would certainly use the hotel again. Car park is very cramped and we were lucky to get the last space.

We were going to the racecourse that evening so the location was absolutely fine £4.50 taxi fare and 15 -20min walk back, perfect. Reception staff excellent could not have been more helpful. Breakfast also excellent in a modern relaxed room( didn't see the need for the tv to be on, personally a no,no.) Room clean comfortable but very very small however just to sleep in fine!. Corridors shabby but now I'm being picky! Overall for our requirements that night really very good value for money. Would not have been happy if I had been staying longer than one night.

Pros:
Price was ok at 60 a night
Nice bright reception, bar and restaurant area though didn't eat there

Cons:
Staff were transactional at best
Car parking is a nightmare (in fairness that is York for you but these guys have a tiny cramped car park that is super busy and on the dreaded first come first served basis - so you can't move your car once parked for fear of having no park to return to later...)
Location. I didn't mind the walk into town, it is stunning through Mickelgate, but it is a LOT further from the action than their website will have you believe...

Thank you for your review.

I'm pleased that you recieved a good deal when booking your stay and that you found the walk into town stunning through nearby Micklegate.

I am surprised to your comment - Staff were transactional at best. At Ibis York we do pride ourselves on excellent customer services, however I will reconfirm to all staff how important good customer service is.

We stayed here two nights over the new year period. There is free parking behind the hotel but it is tiny so don't get your hopes up, we were told there was a free car park down the road but parked closer to the hotel behind the cinema for 48 hours for £15. We checked in at 2pm and got to our room on the 2nd floor the room was huge and a little empty, there were stains on the settee and the carpet was filthy as I found out after taking a shower and walking to the bed, my feet were black! The train station is about 10 minutes walk away from the hotel, which is handy and it takes about 20 minutes to walk into the city centre from the hotel. The staff were friendly enough downstairs on reception and at the bar and we were pleasantly surprised by the prices of the drinks as we ordered two ports and lemonades and it was £4! We were getting ready for one of our nights out and decided to call reception for an iron and ironing board, I sat half ready for 10 minutes and nobody answered our call. But it turned out there was a utility room a few doors down from our room so we didn't really need them anyway.

If you're looking for a bog standard bed for the night then stay here. We might even chance the 4* hostel closer to the city centre next time, as its probably cheaper and cleaner.

I am cocerned that you found you stay with us disspointing.

As with other reviews I have mentioned that because we are a city centre hotel, space is limited, without an option to expand our car park. My reception team are always on hand to advice on any free parking or the cheapest car parks in the local area.

I am happy however that you found your room large enough to accomodate your needs. I will address your concerns regarding the housekeeping standards with my Head Housekeeper, but would like to reassure you that our carpets are hoovered on a daily basis.

I'm also pleased that you found our bar prices pleasantly surprising.

I apologise that you were waiting for 10 minutes to get through to reception, my only explaination would be that the reception team were dealing with other guests at the time, but I am happy that you located our ironing facilities.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. I appreciate all feedback from guests.

Having stayed in numerous Hotels i would consider this hotel to be at the Top end of the Budget range Hotels . The Hotel is very modern obviously recently had an up grade in the reception / Bar / Resturant area and very convenient for the City Centre. The Reception in fact all staff were most polite and very helpful the Room was of a Good Standard , Clean and with all modern ammenities the Bedroom itself was of a good size and clean with a good size bathroom what more can you expect from this Type of Hotel , The breakfast was of buffet style either full English or continental and plentiful.

I would not hesitate to recommend this Hotel to other people " If you want Five Star then you will have to pay Five Star Prices "

All in All i would consider this Hotel good value for money and a pleasant stay was had.

Thankyou to all the Staff

Room Tip: Request Room at rear of Hotel as the Front is on the main Road

A nice convenient location just 2 minutes away from the city walls, but thats about it for the positives.

The breakfast is reasonably good too, but you have to pay extra for it.

You walk in and your hopes are raised as a lot of money has obviously recently been spent on the reception and bar area, but you don't even make of it off the ground floor before realising where the money has been spent.

The rest of the hotel is very tired, dated and dirty. Our room was barely wider than the bed was long, to the point that we had to walk sideways past the end of the bed, the tv barely functioned and was positioned nowhere near the bed (due to the lack of space) so was barely viewable. The bathroom was tiny, one of those where you could probably use the toilet whilst having a shower.

Also, the car park is tiny and there is no free on street parking nearby. This means that when the cleaning staff arrive they just park anywhere in the car park and block other cars in, we saw some guest cars blocked in by 4 cars owned by members of staff. This is really bad practice and shouldn't be allowed by the hotel.

I am happy that you found the location of the hotel was a positive during your stay.

We provide numerous packages which include room only and bed & breakfast, because not every guest will want to take breakfast and for that reason we do ask that those wishing to take breakfast pay for the extra.

Being a grade 2 listed building we have rooms of different sizes, but should you wish to book with us in the future please contact the hotel directly in order for one of my team to allocate you a larger room, which may suit your needs better.

All our bathrooms are equiped with a standard toilet, sink and seperate shower cubical or bath & shower. I am disapointed that you found this small for your stay.

Being a city centre hotel, we do not have any scope to expand our free parking facilities, however we do advise guests about free on street parking or the local NCP car park, which are both just 2-3 minutes walk away.

Thank you for taking the time to leave you thoughts regarding your recent stay.
