We visited the Kilima Hotel with friends as our base for a long weekend in York, Our stay duration was for two nights.
Looking at the room rate for weekends, it is almost twice that of a weekday stay, which I suppose is understandable. If we were rating the value against the weekday price, it would have got an extra mark.
We arrived on a Friday around lunchtime and parked in the ample spaces that were available at the rear of the hotel. Parking was free and the car park appears to be monitored from within the hotel by CCTV which is a nice bit of extra security.
The hotel building itself is apparently a former rectory dating from the 19th Century so it is by no means “modern” and has a reasonable degree of character. The decor and furnishings are in keeping with the age of the building but some areas are starting to look a little tired and could do with a bit of a refresh in places. Notwithstanding that, everywhere was clean and tidy with nothing obviously unattended to in terms of cleaning from what we saw.
The hotel has a pool and a gym / steam room but we didn’t see or use these during our stay.
We were presented with a warm welcome on entering reception – very friendly. We were given a map of the town centre and showed where we were on it, and also the shortest route into town.
We were told about the facilities available and whilst we were early for check in, we were told only one of the rooms was ready, we could put our all our bags into that room or check in properly later – we opted to leave our bags in the car and went into York coming back to check in later in the afternoon – when we did, we were reminded of the facilities and breakfast times.
There was also a sign on reception outlining that dinner was available in the evening in the restaurant and what today’s special was. We had already booked or dining arrangements in town for the two nights so didn’t take advantage of the dining option.
There were leather chairs adjacent to the reception and a separate adjoining lounge area with additional leather sofas for impromptu seating.
We were also advised to book taxis in good time as the wait time for them could be quite a while at busy times (over an hour sometimes!), The walk to the town centre is about 20-25 minutes or so, which is OK if the weather is fine. If its raining, you need a taxi, which reception will order for you, and takes about 5-10 minutes to the centre for around £6.00 ish.
Our room (9) was on the first floor – we didn’t notice if there was a lift (I don’t think there was) but we asked if we needed any help with our luggage. The stuffed fox in a glass case outside our room was, whilst in keeping with the hotel decor, unusual and unexpected but he did look friendly enough.
Room 9 appears to a one of the smaller rooms in the hotel looking at the pictures on the Trip Advisor and Best Western websites, it was adequate but a bit cramped, clean and comfortable, although it was VERY warm from the very powerful central heating.
The room faced out to the side of the building and there was no discernable noise from the main road to the front.
Facilities in the room were: Small wardrobe with just enough hanging space and hangers, dressing table with mirror, two small bedside tables (one with an alarm/radio, the other with a telephone), a coffee table with a small (but adequate) flatscreen TV with remote, a chair, hair dryer, fan and extra bedding. There was also a full length mirror on the wall and a trouser press. There was also a kettle and plenty of sachets of tea and coffee and some biscuits to nibble on (replenished daily).
The bathroom had a W.C, Washbasin and Shower but no bath. It was a small space but in keeping with the rest of the room. There was a selection of toiletries on the small shelf over the basin and a mirror with shaving light.
Breakfast in the morning was a fully seated affair down in the restaurant (below ground floor) adjoining the bar area.
There is a choice of fruit, cereal, kippers, croissants and a Full English breakfast. Everything is ordered and served at the table including cereal, toast, tea, coffee, juice etc so no helping yourself, but if you want extra juice, toast etc, all you had to do was ask and one of the friendly waitresses would bring it straight over.
The adjoining bar area was cosy and fairly reasonably priced for a hotel bar, though the range of drinks available is quite limited. The bar isn’t staffed at all times and neither is reception particularly late at night, but we always managed to find someone to serve us.
All in all, not a bad place to stay, but if you like modern up to date décor and furnishings, maybe not for you. It is however clean and tidy and has friendly staff and a good breakfast – my friend had the kippers and said it was one of the best he had ever had!
Would my wife and I stay again? Yes we would but maybe we would ask for a larger room as ours was a little small for a couple.
