Best Western Kilima Hotel
Ranked #22 of 47 Hotels in York
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 25, 2012

We visited the Kilima Hotel with friends as our base for a long weekend in York, Our stay duration was for two nights.

Looking at the room rate for weekends, it is almost twice that of a weekday stay, which I suppose is understandable. If we were rating the value against the weekday price, it would have got an extra mark.

We arrived on a Friday around lunchtime and parked in the ample spaces that were available at the rear of the hotel. Parking was free and the car park appears to be monitored from within the hotel by CCTV which is a nice bit of extra security.

The hotel building itself is apparently a former rectory dating from the 19th Century so it is by no means “modern” and has a reasonable degree of character. The decor and furnishings are in keeping with the age of the building but some areas are starting to look a little tired and could do with a bit of a refresh in places. Notwithstanding that, everywhere was clean and tidy with nothing obviously unattended to in terms of cleaning from what we saw.

The hotel has a pool and a gym / steam room but we didn’t see or use these during our stay.

We were presented with a warm welcome on entering reception – very friendly. We were given a map of the town centre and showed where we were on it, and also the shortest route into town.

We were told about the facilities available and whilst we were early for check in, we were told only one of the rooms was ready, we could put our all our bags into that room or check in properly later – we opted to leave our bags in the car and went into York coming back to check in later in the afternoon – when we did, we were reminded of the facilities and breakfast times.

There was also a sign on reception outlining that dinner was available in the evening in the restaurant and what today’s special was. We had already booked or dining arrangements in town for the two nights so didn’t take advantage of the dining option.

There were leather chairs adjacent to the reception and a separate adjoining lounge area with additional leather sofas for impromptu seating.

We were also advised to book taxis in good time as the wait time for them could be quite a while at busy times (over an hour sometimes!), The walk to the town centre is about 20-25 minutes or so, which is OK if the weather is fine. If its raining, you need a taxi, which reception will order for you, and takes about 5-10 minutes to the centre for around £6.00 ish.

Our room (9) was on the first floor – we didn’t notice if there was a lift (I don’t think there was) but we asked if we needed any help with our luggage. The stuffed fox in a glass case outside our room was, whilst in keeping with the hotel decor, unusual and unexpected but he did look friendly enough.

Room 9 appears to a one of the smaller rooms in the hotel looking at the pictures on the Trip Advisor and Best Western websites, it was adequate but a bit cramped, clean and comfortable, although it was VERY warm from the very powerful central heating.

The room faced out to the side of the building and there was no discernable noise from the main road to the front.

Facilities in the room were: Small wardrobe with just enough hanging space and hangers, dressing table with mirror, two small bedside tables (one with an alarm/radio, the other with a telephone), a coffee table with a small (but adequate) flatscreen TV with remote, a chair, hair dryer, fan and extra bedding. There was also a full length mirror on the wall and a trouser press. There was also a kettle and plenty of sachets of tea and coffee and some biscuits to nibble on (replenished daily).

The bathroom had a W.C, Washbasin and Shower but no bath. It was a small space but in keeping with the rest of the room. There was a selection of toiletries on the small shelf over the basin and a mirror with shaving light.

Breakfast in the morning was a fully seated affair down in the restaurant (below ground floor) adjoining the bar area.

There is a choice of fruit, cereal, kippers, croissants and a Full English breakfast. Everything is ordered and served at the table including cereal, toast, tea, coffee, juice etc so no helping yourself, but if you want extra juice, toast etc, all you had to do was ask and one of the friendly waitresses would bring it straight over.

The adjoining bar area was cosy and fairly reasonably priced for a hotel bar, though the range of drinks available is quite limited. The bar isn’t staffed at all times and neither is reception particularly late at night, but we always managed to find someone to serve us.

All in all, not a bad place to stay, but if you like modern up to date décor and furnishings, maybe not for you. It is however clean and tidy and has friendly staff and a good breakfast – my friend had the kippers and said it was one of the best he had ever had!

Would my wife and I stay again? Yes we would but maybe we would ask for a larger room as ours was a little small for a couple.

Room Tip: Be specific when booking to make sure you get one of the larger rooms - if you want a bath rather th...

Had a lovely stay at this hotel. It was very cosy and felt like a home from home. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and made me feel very comfortable. The room was spacious and clean and decorated nicely. The only negative was that the room was very warm during the night despite the radiator been turned off? The swimming pool was quiet and a good area to relax for an early evening swim. The gym was a bit of a disappointment as was a very small room with a few very old machines in but as I was the only one using it, it did the job for me. Hotel is also in a great location and only a short and pleasant walk into the centre of York. I will defiantly return to this hotel and would highly recommend to others.

We were simply looking for a hotel with a pool that served breakfast, we saw this and booked.

The guy on the desk was great; warm, welcoming and funny. He took us to our room, which was average, the bathroom a little dated but it was clean, comfortable and well sized with the obligatory hot drink facilities and hair dryer. Pretty much as described.

The pool area was very quiet, being mid-week, and no, the seat in the steam-room still hasn't been repaired! That said, the facilities were clean and well kept with this exception.

Breakfast in the bar area was perfectly fine, we weren't left wanting and the service was excellent, incidentally, the drinks in the bar are nicely priced.

The hotel is pretty close to the city and is a great place to stay to explore the local area.

In short, we would stay here again.

We stayed for two nights at the Best Western Kilima, and were very comfortable there. The hotel was clean, pleasantly decorated, and with everything we needed for our stay. The full breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. The restaurant menu wasn't overly large, but then does it need to be? The food was well prepared and cooked, and the service was friendly and prompt. (The salmon was especially good!)
The front of house service was also very friendly, and we were made to feel at home right from the start.
The hotel is well located for all the visitor attractions of York, with good off-road car parking. A 20 minute walk took us into the city.
Overall, I can reccomend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit York

Room Tip: Several rooms are at ground floor level, and although the hotel is on a busy road, traffic noise was...

This is a very friendly, comfortable hotel situated in a mainly residential area about 25 mins walk from the historic centre of York. We stayed in a suite with 4 poster bed for 3 nights. The room was very clean, well equipped and the bed really comfortable. There is no traffic noise at the back of the hotel, and there is a large private car park. The English breakfast was good, but there was a lack of a continental breakfast alternative - just cereals and toast. The restaurant serves good food from a varied menu in the evening. There is a small swimming pool on the lower ground floor which we found to be ideal for a quick swim or to relax for a while. The only draw back to this hotel is its distance from the historic centre, but it is only a £5 taxi ride and the hotel is very quiet..

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel. The main road at the front is quite a busy road. There is n...

I have stayed at the Kilima for a few years now whenever I am in York foreither business or pleasure and it has always been consistently brilliant. A freindly welcome everytime from Chris and the team. Well appointed clean rooms, the restaurant/bar has character and the team are courteous, professional and efficient and the meals including breakf are brilliant, even catering for children. There is a small gym and a decent sized swimming pool and steam room to work off the tasty fayre. The whole hotel has a great freindly atmosphere which is testament to the staff. The hotel is easy to get to and there is quite a decent sized carpark which is covered by CCTV. York City centre is a pleasant 15 minute walk but there is a bus stop close by with a regular service. So in a nutshell - Fantastic and highly recommended

Stayed here for 2 nights for a weekend in York with my parents. Had read one review which had suggested the hotel lacked cleanliness but decided to go anyway based on other reviews. Cleanliness was no problem; rooms were nicely decorated; there was even a pool if you fancied a dip. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was absolutely fabulous - it was just a shame more guests weren't also using the bar and restaurant; we basically dined alone. Because of the lack of other diners we chose to eat out the second evening to get a bit of atmosphere.
Location was fine - probably a 10 min walk to the centre and there is plenty of parking.
Would recommend staying here and encourage guests to dine in - would be lovely to keep their fabulous chef busy.
