“Pain free, joy free”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

I stayed here for two nights as part of a business conference. I turned up late after a journey through some really bad winter weather so was looking forward to a warm, welcoming hotel.

The underground parking was Ok but the layout of the car park with cars jammed in means it has to be valet parking- not great if you want you car in a hurry, although the night attendant was very helpful.

Check-in was prompt and they did a good job of sorting out conflicting bookings I had. Bar service was lively and service at breakfast was very good (as was the selection).

The hotel is astoundingly well situated for tourist areas, eating and drinking and shopping so so far so good and totally pain free.

The joy free bit comes from the hotel itself. The reception area feels like an empty shop, the bar has no atmosphere and it is difficyult fr a group to get together in it. my superior room was on the top floor so had lots of dated furniture, and damaged walls etc with a sloping ceiling meaning i felt confined.

the hotel does not do justice to its location nor to the friendliness and willingness of the staff.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the top floor

Close to all major attractions. Rooms at side of hotel quieter than those facing Clifford's Tower, but have no view. Some rooms seem to have a problem with heating - i.e. very hot even when radiator off.

Room Tip: Rooms with view of Clifford's Tower are noiser than rooms at the side of the building which can...

Quick and efficient valet parking, prompt check in. Room had two doubles as we had booked a family room, unfortunately the room was so small we had very little floor space. When the chair at the dressing table was being used you could not get passed and had to climb over the bed. Room was very non descript, lacking in any style or colour. Bathroom was even smaller and on arrival I had to wipe a few small stains from the toilet seat. Plenty of towels and a well stocked drinks tray. View was of back yards and roofs so we did not draw back the dated net curtains. Breakfast wS lovely, lots of choice, fresh, good quality ingredients and good waitress service. We have now stayed in five different hotels in York but we won't be returning to this one.

Location- + near shops and bars - noisy at night due to car park opposite
Check-in- + good quick service, offered map of york to get around
Room- + free safe, big tv and bed, nice toiletries, big towels, clean, free wine and bottled water in delux room - no fridge, very small room and bathroom (half the size of the premierinn bathrooms!), duvet too small and thin, bedding not fancy like the pictures on website, cliffords tower not lit up from front so pointless paying delux prices for the view
Food- didn't sample the food but breakfast room looked hectic with people queuing for tables, we went to a Wetherspoons for £4
Parking- underground carpark looked small with cars parked on the ramp waiting to be 'valet' parked, we used APCOA behind the station- £2 a day pre-booked on internet with a reserved space as you enter on left, lots of cars left and no problems left overnight. Dont be tempted to use the Castle car park opposite the hotel unless you have covered the parking fees- i saw a parking warden putting a ticket on a car at 08.30 looked like the car had been there all night. We paid £4 for sat/sun- bargain.
Overall a nice hotel but not worth the price paid for a room that looked like a travelodge/premierinn chain.

Room Tip: Dont bother paying for a delux- try and get a basic room at a bargain price!

We stayed at the Hilton over the weekend of our wedding and were very well looked after.

We arrived at the hotel and were given a comp upgrade to a deluxe room, which had a wonderful view of Cliffords Tower. The room itself was nice, well maintained and clean. As we were in a deluxe, we also had a free fruit basket each day as well as robes. Sleep quality was ok, but i found the pillows far too soft (i often have this issue at hotels and should really learn to travel with my own pillow!). Being at the front of the hotel and right above the main entrance, there was quite a lot of noise from other guests and drunks in the street and the geese were noisy too!

Service was excellent. When we went down for breakfast on the morning of our wedding, the restaurant staff knew who we were and wished us well for the day and gave us complimentary bucks fizz. Similarly on the morning after the wedding, staff asked how we'd got on and seemed genuinely interested. These little, personal touches really made us feel special and werent unnoticed.

Plus, they only charged us for 1 days parking and not 2!

We dont live far from York so are not likely to stay at a hotel in the city for a very long time, but I would definitely recommend the Hilton. Maybe just ask for a quiet room!

Room Tip: Maybe a room at the back of the hotel would be quieter.

This hotel is located bang in the centre of the York attractions. What more can you ask for if the hotel you are staying in is facing the York castle? Almost every main attraction is walking distance and if some are a bit far out even then it's only a short walk. The hotel is situated directly opposite the main York museum, perfect start to sight seeing. The service overall is faultless and the staff is extremely helpful. The breakfast menu is very good value for money at only £10 per person for guests at the hotel. The variety of the menu is immense! The rooms are of standard quality but was a little disappointed with the shower which isn't exactly full of power. Another downfall is parking, at £17 a night. Ideally the hotel should provide free or cheaper parking for guests at the hotel. We had trouble parking as we found that the hotel car park was full and offered overflow parking at a car park down the road but we looked elsewhere. But these are minor glitches and all in all we would highly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Try and get the deluxe room as its facing the stunning York castle, unlike the other suites. If your...

Clean, normal 3 stars hotel well located within York.

The hotel was clean and tidy, although It wasn't much great to be a hilton.

The buffet was ok, as well as the rooms, and the price was slightly expensive for the quality of it, £107.

In summary, a guarantee of no sudden surprises, but nothing from another world...
