“Downton Abbey experience!”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

On a recent trip to York, I booked us into the Middlethorpe for the unique experience it offered.

What a grand building! We, and the general public, are lucky to have this building now in the care of the National Trust and available as a hotel for us all to enjoy.

We stayed in the converted stables, rather than the main house, and the room was very comfortable, though a little tight on space. However, everything was there that we needed, and it was warm and comfortable. Breakfast was taken in the dining room of the main House.

We had dinner in their restaurant, which was a fabulous evening. The standard was very high, and must rank as one of the best in the region. The whole experience was very 'country house', with pre-dinner drinks in the drawing room, whilst selecting from the menu, and then being escorted to dinner by a waiter when it was ready. There is a very subdued 'hush' to the atmosphere, which may be a bit overwhelming for some. This is probably due to the surroundings.

The building is grandly furnished with what appear to be original items. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and go out of their way to make you relax. The grounds extend to about 20 acres, with manicured lawns, croquet green, lake and a ha-ha!

I'm sure that Lord Grantham, Lady Mary and Bates were around there somewhere!

Thoroughly enjoyable. The house goes back to the 17th century and sits on 20 acres. You get the feel of an authentic country house experience, but all the facilities are up to date, including free Wifi. The main house has the prettiest bedrooms. That said, we stayed in the courtyard and our room was very nice. The restaurant is excellent and the staff is knowledgeable and very helpful. We were there for three nights on a "dinner, bed, and breakfast" package and had no trouble finding good things to eat. The wine selection is good, particularly the "stickies". The grounds and garden are lovely and are a pleasure to walk around. The hotel is also a spa, with a well equipped fitness center. I had no trouble finding a machine. Three individuals stand out as excellent, the Scottish concierge, the Maître de, and our waiter, Max. We will be back.

Perfect two night stay. The staff were all lovely and went out of their way to be helpful. The hall and rooms themselves are beautiful. Dinner was gourmet and the service was excellent. Would recommend this to anyone looking at being pampered.

We stayed for two nights, in one of the rooms in the converted stable block, and would recommend it very highly. Our stay included a celebratory Sunday lunch for six, which was very successful.
The staff are charming and attentive, and we found the general atmosphere to be relaxed without losing formality. Food was just right and, for the quality, well priced.
The Spa is good - decent sized pool, plus steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi all include in the price. We didn't try any treatments, so can't comment on them.
The gardens are magnificent. It's worth making sure you have a change of shoes (even boots) with you so that you can explore the whole park.

I took my other half hear for their birthday meal.

I was a bit wary as I thought it may be a bit formal and stuffy but both the food and staff were great.

A good selection of wine at prices you would expect to stay somewhere like this.

Just wish we had stayed but couldn't find an excuse when I only live about a mile and a half away!

We will certainly be back again,

Old world charm, elegance, and a step back in time!

Though costly, the Middlethorpe Hall and Spa was a once in a lifetime experience. I am so happy I got to experience a place like this!

The service was impeccable, the staff was gracious and accommodating, and the gardens were beautiful.

You can't walk to the city of York from the grounds but that would add to the charm for those looking to escape the busy city! Luckily, it is only a short cab ride.

Once a large private house, now restored as a country hotel, this is a very pleasant place for a weekend break. It is old fashioned, but that's why you're there - a sort of Downton Abbey experience. The service is excellent, and the restaurant very nice for dinner and breakfast. One of the pleasures is simply sitting around reading the papers, having a drink or strolling in the gardens (where, sadly, lies its one drawback, the road noise, commented on elsewhere - hence the slight markdown for location). I like staying in the main building, though others might prefer the converted stable block which has been beautifully restored in a sort of National Trust way. Recommended.
