Our splurge lodging for two nights on our recent trip to York. Lovely rooms, great service, excellent food. The hotel is under the care of the National Trust, the nonprofit that preserves England's historical properties and sites. Your pricey stay here helps the Trust. A plus for us, long time members of the Royal Oak Foundation, the American organization in alliance with the National Trust. We did not use the spa as time was limited, but we did visit long enough to get a feel for the services provided. On a longer visit, we would have definitely indulged!

We stayed in a superb room with a beautiful view of the grounds, and, from the bathroom, of the finishing straight of the racecourse! The staff were excellent, with just the right balance of attentiveness and respect for privacy. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel as we wanted to try a restaurant in York, but after the best hotel breakfast in many years wondered if we'd made the right decision! The spa was good too.

We stayed at Middlethorpe for three nights in August 2011. I must say that it was one of the most pleasant experiences in a hotel ever. It actually felt less like a hotel but rather like staying in a stately home as a guest. Among lots of other things we liked the pillows so much that we have asked the hotel where we could get them from. And the manager was so kind as to offer ordering some for us! We have booked the next stay now and are looking very much forward to it.

I sent this email to the manager following our stay:

Dear Mr Chatard,

I just wanted to write to you to say thank you so much for our stay with you; to arrive at the hotel and find we'd been given an upgrade was just wonderful!

First and foremost I must compliment you on your staff; everyone was phenomenally kind and helpful, and very friendly - doors were opened, bags carried, taxis ordered and even a toothbrush found when we realised we'd forgotten one!

The hotel is such a lovely place to be - a wonderfully grand setting but so warm and inviting too. Our afternoon tea was delicious and it was wonderful to feel that we could really take our time. The staff were courteous and helpful but really gave us the peace and space to enjoy it - it was rather like sitting in a friends house!

We also used the spa, which was so charming, what a wonderful idea. Again the staff there could not have been more helpful.

The fresh tea and coffee in our room in the morning was a wonderful touch, and we enjoyed breakfast immensely.

I can't tell you how much we enjoyed our stay - so much thought and care has gone into the restoration and running of Middlethorpe, it was such a delight to stay with you.

If we're ever in the area again I can say without a shadow of a doubt I know where I'll be staying!

Thank you so much and please pass our thanks to your staff,

We booked this hotel after reading previous reviews and would confirm that it deserve the overall ratings from other reviewers.

It has all of the olde worlde charm you would expect. From the moment we checked in it was obvious that this was something social (not least that we unexpectedly had an upgrade to a Junior Suite!).

Lots of of period charm including lots of old paintings, flagstone floors, grand staircase and uneven floors and walls.

There was an effortless courtesy from all o the staff without being stuffy or overbearing. They instantly made us feel at ease.

The food was faultless albeit a bit pricey but after all you get what you paid for.

Would we go back, oh yes!

This is a venue for a special treat.

We booked Middlethorpe Hall on only 4 day's notice, so we picked up a pretty good rate of around £470 for 3 nights, including the sustenance and entertainment (more of that later) of breakfasts. Our ground floor courtyard room was wonderful - separate sitting room with antique furnishings and a very large bedroom with king bed, comfortable mattress and down pillows. We had spent the previous 2 nights at the Green Dragon Inn near Cowley and we could have fitted 4 of their rooms into the 2 rooms we had at Middlethorpe! Given we had the entire ground floor of our brick building, the room was wonderfully quiet and private.

The manor house is a great example of 1700's architecture, workmanship (especially the timber joinery) and decor. While the srtucture is obviously struggling with the effects of heavy masonry on marshy soil, there has been a great deal of time and money spent on bringing this building back towards its prime. The ballroom, now a very large quests' sitting room, is thoughtfully decorated and presents with an open fire and plush lounges.

Breakfast each day was quite good, with attentive service without the somewhat pretentious effort accompanying the evening meal. The Yorkshire hospitality was mixed with a twinge of comedy on day 2 as what seemed like 15 couples descended on the breakfast room within the space of 10 minutes. The staff were clearly stretched but a great effort was made to not only maintain prompt service, but to also assure everyone that everything was in control and that each departure of staff from the room would be but momentary.

We twice had our evening dinner at Middlethorpe, my wife enjoying her (very salmon centric)meals perhaps more than I my red meats and game. That said, all up the food was good and the wine list very, very good with a wide selection of very good wines from every corner of the globe.

If you are visiting York, we can only suggest you have Middlethorpe Hall first on your list of accommodation options.

We stayed at Middlethorpe for several days when York had it's worst flooding in 40 years. What a perfect place for us to see the area and find relatives from the 1600's. The staff and facilities are fantastic.
