“Good stay, dodgy bed!”
Reviewed November 18, 2013 via mobile

We stayed for two nights and found the room clean and presentable. The only problem was our king sized bed was actually two 3/4 beds shoved together and so if I rolled to the middle I started to sink through the gap. At £150 inc breakfast per night, I wouldn't have expected this.

The breakfast was good, plenty of hot food and it was refreshed regularly. Avoid if you don't like buffet style, go if you like good food and plenty of it.

We recently returned from a 2 night stay in the city at this hotel on a football break. Our usual hotel was not available so we booked this because we knew from past experience that it was in a handy location, five to ten minutes walk from the rail station and just over the river from the city centre. Everything lived up to our expectations.

On arrival booking in was easy with very helpful staff and that was our overall experience with the staff throughout our stay despite there being a conference taking place within the hotel which no doubt created a lot of extra work. We found the room clean and large enough for our purposes and this also applied to the bathroom which had a decent sized shower cubicle.

That said there were a couple of very minor gripes .Firstly there seemed to be only one choice of pillows on the bed, both soft. We would have liked to see a hard or a soft pillow option available. Also the bathroom doors all seemed rather squeaky which did cause a little missed sleep as one of our neighbours seemed to be having fun opening and closing theirs constantly in the wee small hours until a visit from I assume staff put a stop to it. We had an inside room overlooking an inner court which meant that when the bedroom lights are on you have to close the curtains as you can be seen from the other corridors. However, these are very minor and on the whole did not have an adverse affect on the quality of our sleep. We certainly heard no noise from outside the hotel.

We did not try the restaurant in the evening so cannot comment on that but certainly the bar staff were very attentive as were the breakfast crew. Breakfast had plenty of variety and quality and as it was self-service it was as plentiful as you wanted it to be.

Overall we had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel at what we felt was a reasonable price and when we re-visit the city will be left with a very difficult decision as to where to stay.

Stayed for the second time this year. Nothing to much trouble for the reception staff. Got free upgrade to river view room on top floor with out asking this time. Friendly, clean and quite. Perfect base for the city centre.

Really enjoyed the carvery on a previous stay so booked DB&B this time. What a mistake the restaurant was closed during our stay and the communication between the staff was shockingly poor. We had booked our meal for 7.15 and by time we had sorted out that we were eating in the bar and that allowance provided did not provide a choice of 3 course meal we had to resort to requesting the duty manager to resolve the issue and were not served our meal until after 9pm. We did receive complimentary drinks however did this make up for spoiling our evening in York? Very dismayed on our second evening again eating in the bar to have to explain the situation again to the staff. Grace behind the bar was literally the hotel,s saving grace! We also booked twin rooms and reminded the staff on 3 separate occasions of this however when we were shown to our rooms they were doubles. We had to wait on this being resolved too. A real shame as good budget hotel soured by these issues. We enjoyed our visit enough the first time to warrant a repeat visit however not sure it will be repeated again.

Stayed here whilst visiting York Minster. The hotel is really clean and fresh, looks like it has recently been refurbished. The staff were superb, very friendly and helpful. The underground car park was very secure, but felt as though we were lucky to get the last space, it's a bit small. The bar is OK, but felt a bit impersonal. The only flaw really was breakfast. The food was good, but the dining room is too small, a real scrum. In contrast, although run off their feet, the staff found time to find some gluten free bread for us, they really do go the extra mile. I will definitely stay there again.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences. There is always a huge demand for our breakfast, which offers a wide range of choices at a very reasonable price, and during very busy periods I am afraid there may be a slight delay before being seated. We do recommend that guests who are awake a little earlier than others, may wish to to avoid the times of peak demand, particularly at weekends. I do hope however that you found the wait to be worthwhile and you enjoyed the rest of your stay in York.

Warm regards

Fantastic hotel. Located just over the water from the main center, less than 5 minutes walk.
Bars and restaurants are located either 2 minutes round the corner or just across the river so perfect for a night out/hen or stag do, but far enough away from the main road that there is no disturbance from night revelers.
Hotel was clean and staff helpful. Only criticism was that house maids were noisy in the mornings slamming doors in adjacent rooms, though not before 8:30am so not a huge issue.
Breakfast tray of Continental items for £10 per person plus £3.50 tray charge appears pricy but food was ample and would have cost the same if not more from Cafe Rouge etc so very happy with that.
Curtains were thick and blocked out light very well.
Bar drinks prices were reasonable. All in all a great stay and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Booked into room 325 (double room) which was in the back of the hotel over near the courtyard.
