Booked this hotel a couple of days before arrival in york, Disappointed that although there was food on sale they didnt start serving till 630. Inside hotel very old n grand with a lovely roaring fireplace, this said ,we were located at the rear of the hotel in "the chalets" walls paper thin no heating in bathroom and cups dirty as we went to make a brew . we were lucky our neighbours were quiet , decent location and free parking were plusses. Paid £70 for a saturday wouldnt know if this was a good deal or not ??

Room Tip: a room inside main hotel is a must

We stayed for 3 nights for a long weekend break. We had a very enjoyable time where the staff made us very welcome and were very friendly. Although they do not cater for Coeliacs(Gluten Free) they did all in their power to make sure I could eat OK. They called me a week or so before we arrived to let me know and give me a choice of bringing my own special bread. I didn't take any and definately didn't starve. The rooms could probable do with a threshen up but I have stayed in worse 5* hotels over the years. In all a good time and would go Back. Thanks to all the Staff.

Very nice building and beautiful lounge area
Staff were helpful but not too happy or smiley, admittedly difficult to be so, late at night.
room was fine, shower was a bit weak but got me clean so no complaints
The maid was lovely and always greeted you with a nice big smile and a "have a wonderful day"
Overall, would probably stay again

Elmbank Hotel put their room on three websites (late.com, booking.com, expedia and probably more) for 40 pounds / night but wouldn't rent the room out for the price they advertised and wanted 25 more pounds for one night! I had received request confirmation but had to chase up to see if our room was booked and were told by the website that Elmbank Hotel wouldn't rent us a room for the price online leaving us with a week to scramble to book a room elsewhere!

Room Tip: Don't believe the price and go through a website that confirms instantly your booking so the hot...

We stayed here for two nights leading up to New Year and have no complaints. Parking was OK and it was easy to find. Our room was bright and clean and everything worked. The decor in the main building is a bit olde (see the bar), but that's part of the charm and character of the place (it might even be a listed building; dunno?). The wood panelled walls and fireplace below the stairs are something to see and a nice place to sit with a wee dram before setting out for the centre. It's fairly convenient for York centre and the Shambles, etc. but a bit of a walk - e.g., a good half hour to get near to the Viking Centre. Take a bus if you're not that fit. Recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in the new bit out the back, which is perfectly OK, but I imagine rooms in the main buildi...

I stayed at the Hotel with my wife on the 30th December 2012. The hotel is in a good location - about half a mile from the city walls. We stayed in the main body of the hotel - rather than the lodge. The room overlooked the main road. The reviews for the hotel were ok on Booking.Com and it was cheap. Unfortunately, there's a big difference between cheap and value for money. The room had a nice bathroom, but the main room was very tired with numerous scuffs and marks on the walls. It was crying out for a re-furbishment. The original sash windows were still in place - although looking the part, they were very draughty and didn't stop any of the traffic noise from coming in. The biggest problem though is how thin the dividing stud walls between rooms are. We went to bed about 11 pm - our neighbours in the next room returned at 12:00. They put the TV on (not loud), but we could clearly hear every word. Suffice it to say that everything else they did that evening, they could have been doing in our room ! After constant noise and dramas, we eventually left the hotel at 04:00 - we just couldn't stand it any longer. We've complained directly to the hotel on two occasions since, without response. My advice - spend a little more on your stay and find somewhere that you will actually enjoy spending time - or at the very least be able to relax and sleep after a long say sight-seeing. This location does not deserve your hard earned cash.

Room Tip: Don't choose a room over-looking the main road.
