“Needs major refurbishment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2012

Stayed at the Elmbank for a weekend with the girls. We booked a triple room which we understood to be a "family" room with a double bed and 2 singles but on arrival had been allocated a room with a double bed and a single. Reception told us we should have specified but a bit of common sense seeing 3 women's names on the list might not have gone amiss. Luckily the double bed was a zip-link so they were able to split it into 2 singles.

On the plus side, the location is convenient for the station and town (about 10-15min walk from the station and 15-20 into town) and there is free parking outside the hotel.

The downsides......the room was quite small and the whole hotel is very very dated. There are patches of gaffer tape on the carpets throughout the hotel, the decor is dated, parts of the hotel smelled of damp. You wouldn't want to spend more time than absolutely necessary in your room! The main lounge of the hotel is beautiful - stunning wood panelling with an open fire which feels very homely but the rest of the building needs a serious makeover and a deep clean. There was dust all round the edges of our room and a crushed biscuit on the main staircase for 2 days during our stay which no one had cleaned up! The bathroom was also dated, in need of a good clean and the water pressure on the shower was terrible and it ran hot/cold when in use.

Breakfast was ok but not very good quality produce. The staff on reception were very welcoming but the breakfast staff weren't very friendly and seemed rushed off their feet trying to serve toast, drinks and keep the buffet stocked up.

We paid about £45pp per night which isn't bad for York city centre but I would rather pay a bit extra to stay somewhere cleaner and more comfortable.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else! There's a new Premier Inn just down the road which I'm sure is very cle...

This hotel could and should be better, stayed one night which was quite enough, bedroom needed new carpet, bathroom needed complete refurbish, wires from the television hanging from the wall, windows needed painting. This hotel has a lovely sitting room with wooden panels, so you would think that the company would ensure that they would improve the rest of the hotel to maintain this look, The bar, reception, dining room should be also given a complete cleaning and refurbishment. It also says it has parking,do not believe this, car park is very very small (2 /3 cars)you are told you can park around the streets near by,this is very difficult as this is a very built up area, and you have the worry of whats happening to your car.You would think that the hotel should want to compete and be the best as there are lots of hotels in historic York,no,just taking your money for a very overpriced below average room.( DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT BOOKING THIS HOTEL) save your money, stay at home,or find a nice b and b,

Pros:-
-We paid £56 BB for a twin room. Good value in our opinion
-Room was clean, spacious and bathroom in working order.
-Good breakfast choice, hot and cold buffet selection.
-Free parking
-Excellent bar prices
-Lovely fire in the lounge area where you can sit and relax
-Pleasant 20 minute walk into centre if weather ok.

Cons:-
-Decor in general is dated and needs attention
-The 20 minute walk into the centre may not suit some and could be unpleasant if weather not good.
-Some rooms are in the outside courtyard area or the lodge so if you want a room in the main hotel then request it.
-Parking is limited.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay. You get what you pay for so we went with the right expectations and we were not disappointed. We had no problems and found the staff helpful.
Stay here if you want good value accommodation and a decent breakfast. Don't stay here if you want central location, modern facilities and are expecting 'the Ritz'. This is a fair and balanced review and hope others find this useful/helpful.

Stayed at the Elmbank Hotel in York last weekend. Outside it looks fairly promising... and it all goes downhill from then on. The reception area is a dull drab affair which is something that you would expect in Dracula's castle. We were greeted without any kind of smile or welcome and given our hotel key. It was quite a miserable affair really.

Walking down the VERY dated corridor we sampled carpet which was held together with gaffa tape. Come on Elmbank, why don't you fit a new carpet for heaven's sake?! Then down to our room with probably the most awful wallpaper and decor I have ever seen. The room actually wasn't that bad, but at the same time wasn't brilliant either. It was clean, but dated and the bathroom was run down with damp patches and a toilet that didn't really work until you flushed the life out of it with the glued on handle. The bed was a "push and zip", even though we asked for a double which meant it wasn't that comfortable. We queried this with the receptionist but she wasn't really bothered.

Would I go there again? No. Would you take your wife/girlfriend there? Certainly not. Take it from me, if you visit this area just go down the road and stay at the Premiere Inn. This place is yearning for the hotel inspector!!!!

Must do better Elmbank.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel if you want a good room.

We were put in the lodge that looked like five sheds at the back ,this was a surprise since we booked our holiday 6 months before . It was shame that we felt as if we were not part of the hotel. The shower was cold . The bed was lovely and big and very comfortable however we had a small window which every time a car parked its head lights shone through.
The hotel looked lovely with its big seating area with open fire we had to walk around to the logde through the car park at night because the hotel had locked the conecting door I would have liked to been in the hotel not the lodge which we booked for.
.

Room Tip: Make sure you are booked into the hotel and not the lodge

I paid for a double room but seem to have got a cleaners cupboard with a double bed forced into it the window was rotting and looked out onto the top of a conservatory some extractor fans and a wall. If the room was small then the bathroom was smaller with not enough room to turn in. The pictures on the website of the double rooms being bright and spacious are very misleading its a shame because the communal areas and the hotels location are great but because of the scruffy excuse for a room I would not recommend and will not be coming back.

Got a late booking for Saturday evening so had to pay price quoted at £99 for two no breakfast. I agree with other comments. Duct tape on carpets, in much need of overhall. We had the smallest ensuite double room I have ever experienced. You could only pass each other in the room by one sitting on the bed. En suite comprisid toliet and shower crameed into a norrow corridor. Enter door, half step to right for toilet, close door if you need to be seated. This is when you discover that the shower is to the left behind the door not obvious until you do wish to be seated.. Will never visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel
