We arrived here at 1 am in the morning, expecting to be greeted by a lone night-porter. What actually greeted us was a hotel lobby full of noisy drunk people and kids running around. We could barely hear the receptionist over the noise - but he neither acknowledged the noise or apologised for it. A hotel lobby bar should be the model of quiet sophistication - not a drunken free-for-all.

The room itself was nice enough, but the separate WC had all the décor and ambience of a public toilet cubicle. It was also very warm, with no air-con, fan, or a window that opened more than a couple of inches. Despite this, the bed was very comfortable.

The lift in the morning proved a particular challenge. The button to call the lift to go 'DOWN' was broken, so there was a helpful note telling guests to press the 'UP' button. Unfortunately, this meant that you entered the lift going up, stopping for guests on the way, and then down stopping for more guests until finally reaching reception. If there's a problem with the lift, fix it! Don't just put up a sign...!

My final word is about the price - we paid out nearly £500 for three people for a two-night stay. This did not include breakfast, and parking was charged as an extra. This is an outrageous price for any hotel - let alone one that is in need of basic maintenance and refurbishment.

Spent two nights at novatel york. We were allowed to check in early on arrival which was nice. The rooms were clean and spacious with plenty of cupboard space for clothes. Breakfast was nice with a good selection of pastries and cooked which was well stocked both days. Swimming pool is small and cold. The staff were friendly throughout. Enjoyed stay and would stop again. Mason Arms pub not far away has good food steaks and traditional pub meals.

Stayed for one night only with the family - the room was okay, although very warm and with the windows open the stench from smokers below and the noise from motorbikes makes sleeping somewhat testing. The hotel has a convenient city centre location. Why they feel the need to charge an extra £10 for parking defeats me - actually my advice would be to leave the car at home unless you have to take it - the traffic in York is truly dreadful....the staff are very friendly, particularly the girls at breakfast who are very obliging and friendly. It is what it is -a basic hotel in a good location.

After inadvertently checking out & leaving my iPad in the room, I called hours later to explain what had happened & was advised after a search of the room it wasn't there. The room had been cleaned but none of the cleaners admitted to having found it and one of them now has my iPad with all my pictures of my baby on. Needless to say I won't be recommending this hotel based on this very upsetting experience.

Good morning. I am very sorry to read you do believe one of our team would have stolen your Ipad. From what I can read, I understand you stayed back in April and I believe door locks would have been read once the item was reported missing. Please feel free to contact me directly at the hotel on Christophe.Ughetto@accor.com should you wish to discuss the matter further.

My kids and I didn't have a bad weekend staying here but it could have been so much better. I like Novotels and when they're done right they can be great value, comfy and relaxing, York Centre didn't pull that off though. Reception was perfectly efficient but I did start to wonder what I'd booked into after seeing the state of the lift and the corridor along to our "executive" room - the decor and the carpet was just so pale, faded and at the point where it will never look clean even if it is. The room itself was pretty disappointing: small, cramped and only the odd nod to its executive status. Really... for the price there should have been more space, air conditioning (definitely!) a decent bed and a comfy sitting area and fast Wi-Fi - none of this and so it wasn't good at all. Felt a bit ripped off really.

One positive, we enjoyed food in the restaurant with the kids, good fun with the chef making our own pizza and getting down with the chocolate fountain. Went for a drink at the bar after that though and had to wait for a couple of minutes while the staff finished arguing about something - apologetic, pleasant and efficient thereafter but it shouldn't happen.

I understand that the hotel is down for a refurb so my negativity is probably down to whoever schedules these things and not the management and staff who are probably waiting around feeling a bit embarrassed until that happens. Those schedulers were too late for me.

Good morning. Many thanks for your comments and honest feedback. I have taken the time to share your comments with the team and would like to apologise for the shortfall in service you might have received on this occasion. As you mentioned in your review, we are planning to start work on the corridors as early as the 2nd of September 2013 and hope to carry on in some of our bedrooms. Thank you once again for your comments. With kind regards.

The hotel was great for the family. Everywhere was clean and tidy. The staff were awesome. Breakfast was very good. The swimming pool was quiet small and very cold. Also paying £10 for parking was a very greedy after you had already paided well over a £100 for your nights B+B.
