“Always go back !”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

My hubby and i try to get to York at least once a year.
We have for the last few times stayed at the Novotel, the hotel is a stone throw from the city, great parking as well !
The hotel is tucked away in a quiet street over looking the river.
Reception staff are brilliant and so helpful, in fact all staff have always been accomodating.
Rooms are lovely we usually have an executive room which is inclusive of all TV channels if you watch it, wifi, bath robes, slippers, coffee machine and a bath which i love !
Breakfast is buffet style which has everything from cereal to full english.
Have eaten meals in the evening which are very good especially the prawn noodles.
Time before last we were there the pool was having a refit, last time we were there it was all done and looks good.
There are wii in the foyer for the kiddies to play on which is a good touch and well thought of.
All in all a good friendly close hotel in a quiet location but minutes from the city.

Room Tip: Upgrade to executive if you can for that added bit of luxury, if not all rooms are good and the beds...

We've stayed a few times here in a family room. The kids love the pool and we love the fact we can sit in the comfort of the bar and watch them enjoy. Location is very near the York walls for a tourist walk into the city, do other touristy things like a boat trip, Minster and Dungeons, and then walk all the way round back again. Toto's pizzeria is across the road and round the corner for the best tomato garlic bread ever!! (need to book - gets busy). The let down for us this year was no free wifi in public/bar area (i'm sure we had it 2 yrs ago?) Anyway, we feel once you have paid over £6.50 for a glass of wine (yes, really!) and £3.75 for a pint; one would expect free wifi in the bar area to address the balance. We've decided we would either stay else where or stay but go out and enjoy a local pub with wifi or internet cafe. Deal breaker Novotel.... get with the 21st century and in touch with what matters to people....

Good morning and thank you for your comments. I would like to thank youfor your regular custom. We should be in a position to offer free WiFI by the middle of 2013 when our contract with our current provider expires. In the meantime, two Imacs stations will be fitted today so that our guests can surf the internet for free in the lounge.

Thank you

We stayed two nights new years Eve's, the bar area has been completely refurbished and is ultra modern, with a large tv on the wall and a wi to keep the children entertained, theres also board games, while the adults have a quiet drink in the bar area, the hotel also has a pool which is always a plus for me in a hotel. The breakfast was very nice with coffe and tea served to you at the table the rest was self service, the staff are friendly and helpful with good local knowledge if you should require it.the rooms are furnished to a high standard and are very comfortable with the usual wi tv ect.

Room Tip: Ask for a Superior queen room

We really enjoyed our four-night, between Christmas and New Year, stay here. Good breakfast, and plentiful, great staff, also great with kids; nice swimming pool (though a bit chilly); decent room and bathroom.

Would suggest you avoid the buffet dinner. They do try to sell it to you, and one night, with irascible children, we gave in. Waste of money: the quality and variety do not come near the price. By contrast, the main dishes a la carte were better prepared and tastier, and decently priced.

Curiously, the breakfast space is quite small. This led to the undignified long queues for breakfast that snaked out into the lounge, past the bar and almost into the reception. A bit better management of demand would help - or maybe they just didn't design the building too well! No matter; they seat everyone quickly enough and didn't mind the decibels emitted by our kids and we provided earplugs for the other guests to protect them...

Great hotel, and really close to the town centre and its attractions.

Stayed in York saturday night at the Novotel. We just needed an affordable and convenient base to go for a meal and explore York's pubs and then shopping on the Sunday, and Novotel delivered for us. Nice clean room, friendly and efficient staff (even got a call from reception after 5 minutes of check in asking if everything was ok...nice touch!) and a cable to plug ipod into TV speakers, not had that in a hotel before! Only snag was a power cut in our room that lasted about 5 minutes and was quickly resolved, and the guests next door smoking, this could be smelt in our room due to the adjoining room door. As others have said, parking great value as the receptionist checking us out let us leave the car all day at no extra cost, £10 for 1 and a half days, and a night, is great value in my opinion.

Opted out of breakfast, £13 for a cooked breakfast very steep considering there is a Wetherspoons 5 mins walk away with a hearty feast for £4.95!

Room Tip: superior queen room seems very good for the money

I chose the Novotel for its location and the swimming pool, and wasn't disappointed. Everything was as you'd expect, i.e. clean and comfortable, though considering it's meant to be a cut above the likes of Hotel 53 or Park Inn (where I've stayed as well), it wasn't really. I guess you're paying for the pool, and it was a good one with convenient changing etc. The room itself was spacious and quiet, with a bath as well as shower (nice) and had a mini bar, though of no use to me. A plus point is that the hotel is set back from busy Fishergate a little, and less likely to suffer the noisy-York-drunks-on-way-home problem of other city centre establishments. Evening dinner is NOT recommended, as it was very slow service and worse than average food, though fairly cheap. (I don't usually eat in hotels for this reason, but felt tired and lazy.) Breakfast on the other hand was very good indeed, with a huge choice on offer (hurrah, they have natural yoghurt) and all very tasty. Have booked for next time I'm in York.
