I stayed at the Dean Court with a friend for a weekend break. The location is great being on the doorstep of York Minster. it takes under 10 mins to walk from the railway station so it is very convenient. There are so many interesting places to see which are all within walking distance. As for the hotel, the USP for this place is the staff. The reception staff, bar staff and especially the breakfast staff were all superb and couldn't do enough. The public areas are very comfortable and well furnished. The bedrooms are well equipped; good quality toiletries in the bathroom (fabulous power shower by the way), well stocked hospitality tray ( including cafetiere!), ironing board (who irons on holiday - not me- but at least you have the option), fridge, housekeeping every day. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to friends. The only negative is that the public areas have air conditioning but the bedrooms don't. Most of the time this wouldn't be an issue but I stayed on what must have been the most hot and humid weekend of the year and the lack of air conditioning was a problem. However, what are the chances of such hot, humid weather conditions ? I would not let thIs influence my decision to stay there again.

Lovely hotel in a lovely location. Far exceeded my expectations after staying in some really horrible Best Western's in the past. Staff were lovely, room was excellent and ideal access for the city centre. I'd definitely stay here again.

A lovely hotel-with excellent service & food. We stayed on the third floor-the downsides were no air con-just a fan which didn't cool us down in the heatwave & as we had to keep the window open the taxi rank across the road which was very noisy. Due to this we didn't get much sleep. Cant fault the staff they were excellent and the rest of the room which was spacious and clean.

Room Tip: Go in the winter when air con is not needed

I have just returned from a week at the Dean Court Hotel. The location is fabulous, just across the road from York Minster and all of the major tourist attractions and shops in the centre of York are within walking distance.

I booked and paid for a single room at the back of the hotel. When I arrived, I was actually given a 'small' double, which was a bonus, but it would have been rather cosy for two people. The room was quiet, on the second floor and looked out towards the Catholic Church next to the hotel. Both the bedroom and bathroom were spotless. The only downside was the heat, but this was no fault of the hotel. We were in the grip of a heatwave during my stay and any building would have suffered the same problem. I have seen other people complain about the decor and furnishings on this website. To be honest, it comes down to personal taste. The furnishings in my room were not what I would have chosen for my own home, but they were perfectly adequate and clean.

I found all of the staff to be very courteous and helpful - nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The valet parking was great and actually one of the reasons why I picked this hotel. Many other hotels did not offer parking or could not guarantee a space. My car was taken away on arrival and brought back within about 10-15 minutes when I wanted to drive out somewhere.

Breakfast was excellent - a buffet table offering the usual cereals, fruit, croissants, juices, etc. In addition to this, there was a super hot menu, which included things like haddock with poached egg, smoked salmon and scrambled egg, full English, eggs benedict, etc. The restaurant where breakfast was served had lovely views of the Minster. I also sampled their dinner menu in the restaurant one evening and the food was exceptional, hence the AA rosette. The Court Bistro serves more 'pub' style food - bangers and mash, fish and chips, pasta, etc. Again the food was very good, but the setting was rather dull, as it didn't have any windows and I thought some of the furniture looked a little 'tired'.

All in all, I enjoyed my time at this hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are much quieter.

The first night, I was in a large room, up two flights of stairs, with no lift. I asked the next morning to be moved, and they moved all my things to a more convenient room.

The 2nd room was a little smaller, quiet, and everything worked well: I was there during a heat wave, and had the fan going all night. Even with a window open it was a little stuffy, looking out onto a little rooftop garden, but surrounded by higher walls.

The staff were all helpful and cheerful, and it was a pleasure to eat breakfast there, and to have an occasional meal in the Court.

Room Tip: If you have difficulty with stairs, make sure they know. Some rooms have lift access, some don'...

This hotel looks to have a perfect location but it does not! The hotel has a taxi stand just outside with drunk people shouting until 5 am all weekend. We got a room with window out to the street and got no sleep. When we told the reception they just said it was to be expected!!

Rooms with another location might be better, but in general the hotel is old with thin walls so to speak. York is a small beatiful town and I would recommend to stay somewhere else.

This hotel is difficult to rate because the rooms are not identical. Our assigned room, 34, was on the top floor of the restaurant side of the building and was awful. Small and stiflingly hot even though outside temps were only in the mid-70's. The one fan provided no relief. Neither did the tiny window high up on the wall, which, when open, obscured the view of the TV. There were no lamps at all, only high intensity lights recessed in the ceiling...this made reading very difficult, especially if one partner wanted to sleep.

The next day we moved to room 50, on the reception desk side of the building. (Apparently the hotel consists of two adjoining buildings, each served by its own elevator.) This room has a smaller bathroom, but in every other way was so much better. Still no air-conditioning, but so large and airy that it wasn't needed, opening the big window provided plenty of ventilation. And reading lamps and even a light over the bathroom mirror!

Aside from our first room, the only other negative was a grumpy gentleman on duty at reception the day of our arrival; all other staff members were very friendly and eager to help. The location was absolutely wonderful, the best we've enjoyed in our many years of traveling. If we could be guaranteed a good room at Dean's Court, we'd consider staying no place else in York. So 1 star for one room and 5 for the other equals, I guess, a 3 star rating?
