So the Polish came to England in large numbers - but we don't know much about their food. Barbakan will give you a wonderful insight into Polish cuisine, and leave you wondering why there isn't a Polish restaurant in every town centre.
The food is real comfort food - main courses include pork shanks (golonka), hunters stews (bigos), dumplings (pierogi) etc. Portion sizes are large - you won't go hungry. But it isn't all about big portions - the cooking is really good and dishes are executed really well. The food offers very good value for money (mains for £8-13 in the evenings, while lunch is a real bargain).
The restaurant is small (perhaps 20-30 covers). This is true of almost all of the best restaurants in York (Blind Swine, il Paradiso del Cibo, Cafe Number 8 etc). If York can keep producing small independent restaurants as good as this, the days of the big chain venues should be numbered.
But the stand-out thing about this restaurant is the service. Friendly, warm and welcoming, the staff will make you feel completely at home and help you make sense of the menu. It is really clear they just want you to fall in love with Polish food - we did - and have already returned to try some more!
