So the Polish came to England in large numbers - but we don't know much about their food. Barbakan will give you a wonderful insight into Polish cuisine, and leave you wondering why there isn't a Polish restaurant in every town centre.

The food is real comfort food - main courses include pork shanks (golonka), hunters stews (bigos), dumplings (pierogi) etc. Portion sizes are large - you won't go hungry. But it isn't all about big portions - the cooking is really good and dishes are executed really well. The food offers very good value for money (mains for £8-13 in the evenings, while lunch is a real bargain).

The restaurant is small (perhaps 20-30 covers). This is true of almost all of the best restaurants in York (Blind Swine, il Paradiso del Cibo, Cafe Number 8 etc). If York can keep producing small independent restaurants as good as this, the days of the big chain venues should be numbered.

But the stand-out thing about this restaurant is the service. Friendly, warm and welcoming, the staff will make you feel completely at home and help you make sense of the menu. It is really clear they just want you to fall in love with Polish food - we did - and have already returned to try some more!

We stumbled on Barbakan looking for a late lunch spot and had an excellent experience. Fresh, unusual soups and sandwiches. Great food at good prices. Highly recommend! Their dinner menu looked wonderful as well.

My wife and I went here during a short break in York. We reserved a table and I am glad we did. The restaurant is very small and it was pretty full when we got there.
We found the atmosphere intimate although some may see it as cramped especially as when we were there it was terribly hot because of the weather.
Our waitress was friendly and smiling, always a plus, as she took our drinks order and presented the menus.
I had that evening's special, a truly gargantuan pork shank served in a broth of carrots, onions and juniper berries. So tender the meat literally fell off the bone, the vegetables cooked perfectly and the broth was delicious with the crusty bread provided to the table. I tried to finish it but it beat me. My wife chose schab z morela which is marinated pork loin with marjoram and garlic and a very rich and thick apricot and shallot gravy. This also came with red cabbage and crushed potatoes but at least she managed to finish hers, just!
In summary, friendly staff, good food and great value made for a happy evening. We will return when back in York

On both occasions I ate lunch here during the nine days I was in York the restaurant, in a quiet area of the town, was very full. The food was excellent, if somewhat slow to arrive. Both the Polish meat balls with linguini and a tuna and olive salad (separately!) came on large and well-filled plates, and were pleasingly tasty. Recommended!
