“appalling grotty pub....”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

based on fairly good reviews we booked the Shoulder of Mutton for the Easter weekend, I can only assume the pictures have undergone significant amount of photoshop... A luke warm welcome, no coffee, no food and no apology for lack of either after 5 hour drive.
Our room was situated above the bar and the noise through to 2am was absolutely horrendous. Despite several calls to the bar politely requesting that the musin be turned down!!!
The whole place was filthy.
We attempted to check out after 1 night and no sleep but could not find anyone responsible, left the key with the cleaner and a message to call me regardiing payment. No call for 3 days, finally received a call from very aggressive woman accusing us of leaving after 2 days and attempting to skip payment.
Unfortunately as it was Easter all accomodation in York was booked so we headed home, ruined weekend, dreadful, dreadful place......We will be taking up the issue with Booking.com ......

Room Tip: don't even consider staying here

BE AWARE NO FOOD AT ALL - disappointment after a 7 hour drive that the nearest food was a walk into town and NO BREAKFASTS in the morning :-(
No apology or explanation from the staff for this on arrival. Apparently there has been no food for a while and no plans to replace the chef. They are going to update their website and descriptions but they haven't got round to it yet!!
Room was comfortable and recently refurbished.
Pub was noisy at night (died down by 1am) and a bit of a kids pub on a Saturday night..

Cheap, but not cheerful. Stayed 4 nights. Night 4, the room had not been cleaned & i was told by the bar staff that the cleaner would be told. The management wouldn't lower themselves to an apology , or even to speak to me ! So stayed in a dirty room .
Big punch ups outside , police attended.
Food was atrocious & the smell of rancid fat pervaded every room.
The management resented to me paying by card , i can only assume this is for tax reasons !
I agree with the review from Petefromleek & wouldn't let my dog stay there.
If you really dis-like someone, book them on to the Shoulder of Mutton !

Room Tip: Dont stay at the Shoulder of Mutton !

Having chosen to stay at The Shoulder Of Mutton because of the favourable reviews, I can't believe that these were for the same place that we stayed at. It was awful, and would give Fawlty Towers a run for the number one hotel not to stop at.
Having taken one and a half hours to travel the last 4 miles into York (there was an accident on the A64), we were in desperate need of some friendly TLC on arrival at The SOM. However, we were barely acknowledged by the landlady before being passed on to someone else. Not exactly the sort of welcome I'd have expected!
The décor in out room was incredibly bare, with there being two mirrors on the walls, and nothing else, despite a previous review talking of “modern fresh decor”. Two stools from out of the bar doubled up as bed-side cabinets (Perhaps this was the modern fresh décor? If so, it was totally wasted on me!), and the shower-head and controls were dirty. On the plus side, the room was warm.
We decided to eat in as the Special Board sounded very tasty (the normal menu was very uninspiring), but unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. The pastry on the pie was burnt and too hard to eat. You wouldn't serve this up in the privacy of your own home, let alone in a restaurant. Well when I say “restaurant”, I mean the dart-board room, as the bar was too busy. We sat in the very draughty window seat. Anyway, back to the food. The chips were overcooked, as were the onion rings, which disintegrated when a knife was applied to them, but at least most of the meat in the mixed grill was edible. When the waitress (barmaid) took the plates away, she asked us if the meal was OK, but before I had a chance to respond, she'd turned away to talk to someone else, the she walked away. We never got the chance to discover if they did sweets.
I fully appreciated the fact that because The SOM is primarily a pub that there would be some noise from the bar (a previous review said there might be a bit of noise until about 11:30), but that did not prepare us for the very loud music and shouting from the bar below our room that went on until 2:00 in the morning. The music that is, as the shouting went on until the final person left at 3:20. When told about this as we left, the landlord said that 1:00 was normal. If I'd have known this before, then we would never have booked to stay here, as I'm sure most normal people would.
Anyway, now to breakfast, which was lauded by so many people's reviews. Amazingly, there was no one to cook breakfast for us – in fact as far as we were aware, there was no one in the SOM apart from the guests, although the landlord did tell me that the chef was somewhere on the premises (Fawlty Towers again?) – obviously not in the kitchen, though. Eventually I rang to see what was happening, and eventually the landlord arrived with the chef. However, being as though it was almost 9:30, it was too late for many people, as we had somewhere to go to, or something to do, so all but three of us had breakfast elsewhere.
The next night we stayed in the bar until 12:30, by which time the landlady had finally managed to get the music turned down, and then we went to bed to the sound of peace. Having bought earplugs earlier in the day, we could have saved ourselves £2!
In the morning we actually had breakfast, much to everyone's amusement, and it was OK.
I also thought that the owners should have made an effort to speak to their staying guests, apart from apologising for us not getting breakfast. It is little things like this that make all the difference.
We are not senile old farts who do not like loud music, nor do we wish to spoil other people's fun, but the noise from the bar was too much. Even when we were sat in the bar, it was loud.
This place is either a pub or a hotel. With the bar so close (directly underneath) the rooms, it is totally unfair to the people staying for a night or two.
Would we recommend The Shoulder of Mutton? Not a chance in hell. What should have been a celebratory few days was totally ruined. Should you decide to take a chance and come here, make sure you pack good quality earplugs!

Positives:
Nice cheery welcome.
Good large clean airy bedroom and bathroom.
Decent cooked breakfast once staff could be bothered to show up for work (see negatives).
Large free car park at back of B&B/Pub.

Negatives:
Draughty bedroom window (owing to old style sash window - we blocked it up with towels which seemed to do the trick).
Booked an 8am breakfast on Saturday 08/12 - still no sign of any staff at 9.15am and a dining room full of guests = NO BREAKFAST - so gave up waiting!!!
Loud music(from pub downstairs) until very late/early hours of the morning- maybe that's why the Chef and waiting on staff didn't turn up for work???
Had a meal in the pub downstairs on Friday 07/12 which was very greasy - not for people watching their cholesteral and a constant smell of stale fat coming from the kitchen.
B&B owner does not reside on the premises - his own words, (surely a health and safety issue - we were not made aware of this so what would we have done in the case of any emergency??)

When the owner was asked about the lack of breakfast on the Saturday his reason was that the Chef -who lives on the premises (???) was feeling ill (too ill apparently to phone his boss to inform him) - no reason whatsoever for the lack of waiting on staff who surely would have contacted their boss and the whole Saturday morning incident could have been avoided.

Also, when the owner was made aware of the loud music he was very flippant by replying that all music should be off by 1am...more than one guest informed i differently. All in all I found his reasons to be very lame!!! - though he did knock £20 off our final bill for our disappointing stay.

Overall - will definitely not be staying here again

Room Tip: The Shoulder of Mutton is very close for access into York town centre/York Minster - just a 10-15min...

We received a nice welcome on arrival. On being shown to our room my opinion changed quite quickly . The curtain was hanging off the window pole and instead of bedside cabinets , a bar stool was situated either side of the bed !
The bathroom was not very clean, the shower was mouldy with pink mould around the shower head ! I came out of the shower not feeling as though clean ! Not a very pleasant stay.

This is our local pub & I have to say being an older couple you are treated with a smile & respect, in particular a new bar man called "Mikey" so helpful & kind, nothing is to much trouble. Although we have never eaten in the pub, the food looks absolutley delicious. I would definitely give this place a go,its location to the City is fantastic.
