Owner description: Experience the threat of nuclear war at York Cold War Bunker! On a fascinating guided tour, learn how volunteers would have played a vital role in ensuring that Britain could survive a nuclear attack. The atmospheric 1960s semi-subterranean bunker is just as it was when stood down in 1991, and the one hour guided tour is enhanced by a short film. Summer opening (25th March - October 31st): Wednesday - Sunday, plus bank holidays, between 10am and 6pm. Entrance by guided tour from 10am, on the hour every hour. No need to book!

On a one night visit to York we arrived via this small, but amazingly interesting attraction. Born in the 1950s myself, and aware of the CND protests, I had never before appreciated what danger we had been in during my childhood and early adulthood. Our very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide filled us in on the history of the Cold War and events leading to the government setting up a UK wide network of such bunkers. It also gives a wonderful insight into how much technology has moved on!

As an English Heritage member this was a superb experience from the usual castle ruins. Our guide, Liam, was extremely knowledgeable and answered every single question thrown at him, even from very inquistive children. Its amazing that this still exists, especially as it sits in a small housing estate. Highly recommended. Well done English Heritage.

This relic of the cold war is a stark reminder of the madness of that era. The idea that volunteers would forsake their loved ones to enter this bunker and provide information to a government that might anyway have been nuked out of existence would be laughable, if it wasn't spooky. The bunker is open at weekends and traditionally entrance is free for the York Residents weekend. You have to book in advance as you are escorted round in a group.

If you like cold war history, this is a must. Pay attention to opening hours and the schedule for guided tours. Our guide had just been employed at the site, and could have received further training.

Decided to visit the Cold War Bunker after seeing a purely by chance sign on the motorway, very glad we did as it is very interesting, informative if a little creepy to imagine what would have happened if the Cold War did actually break out. You have to go on a tour to visit the bunker which provides a real depth of knowledge from the guides who are enthusiastic and friendly. Reasonable entry fee of £6.40 and a good way to spend an afternoon.
