We visited the DIG after going to Jorvick and felt that these two places complemented each other well. At Jorvick you find out about the lives of the Vikings, at The DIG you find out how the information was gathered.
The visit took about 2 hours. We had an archaeologist introduce us to what they do, and how they find out about the past. We were then shown to an area with 4 dig 'sites' where we could 'uncover' artefacts and learn about them. After the first part of the visit with the guide, you view the rest of the exhibitions on your own.
It was very informative, and probably best suited to young kids. Our children enjoyed themselves very much. In particular, they had fun holding 1000 year old poo. We also learnt a lot from this visit and enjoyed it.

My 10 year old LOVED his afternoon here. Excellent talk, plenty of time to dig, a chance to learn more with the group leader and then time to explore the museum further alone. He and I both learned an enormous amount. We were then able to walk to the Hungate site and see what the archaeologists had actually been doing. Do ask questions of the staff - they all have archaeological training and are highly knowledgeable.
