“Grand hotel but not quite 5 star”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

The hotel is in a fabulous building and is close to the station and within walking distance of the town centre, so a perfect place to stay to explore York. Our stay was comfortable, but I would say the little touches that make a hotel 5 star were missing. No bubbly wine on offer at breakfast, unlike every other 5 star hotel I have stayed in! Restaurant very cramped at breakfast. Lovely cold meats and smoked salmon on offer but no dressings or salads to accompany them like they have on the continent. The cooked breakfasts were very good and enjoyed by the rest of my family. The lounges were beautifully decorated and furnished but not enough seats for all the guests to sit and relax after dinner! Our room was huge but sparsely furnished and we never did get it warm. UHT milk in the fridge - fresh milk would have made so much difference. We did have a problem with our TV which we reported and a very helpful technician appeared very quickly to sort it out. The spa was small but adequate and the staff very helpful. We found the concierges to be helpful and the overall the service the staff gave was good. The Cedar Court is a lovely hotel but we felt some aspects fell short of it's 5 star rating.

We booked the two night new year break and added a further night at the end. We went for a classic room which was very comfortable although the heating system was a bit noisy and unreliable so we did have to request a heater. However, the housekeeping staff were very helpful and our heater arrived immediately. The food and service was excellent throughout our stay and would recommend the champagne afternoon tea. The menu in the grill restaurant is fairly limited but the steaks were perfectly cooked and presented. The wine list is very extensive and if you are a whiskey drinker you will be in heaven! The location is perfect and everything is within walking distance. We took advantage of the valet parking for a small additional cost. The live band on new year's eve was fantastic and we were disappointed when they finished at 12.30.

Absolutely shocking treatment from a 5* hotel. We got a phone call 20 minutes before we were due to check in to tell us they had double booked us and would have to pay to stay in a different hotel for the night and there was nothing they could do about it...... why had they only just realised?! After travelling a long distance to get to the hotel you can imagine our frustration and anger. Not what you expect from the apparent "York's best hotel". Disappointed is an understatement.

Two night break, 29/30 December in York made special by our stay at such a super hotel. The decor and rooms are superb. Very close to railway station.
All the staff, without exception, we're welcoming, efficient and so polite - nothing was too much trouble. Do not forget to make use of the Spa.

This hotel is stunning - perfect for a city break if you fancy treating yourself. As you would expect for a 5-star, it is more expensive but completely worth the money.

We couldn't fault the service, nothing was too much trouble. The building is stunning and the rooms are beautiful and luxuriously appointed. The pool, steam room and sauna are definitely worth a visit. The only thing we didn't get chance to try was the restaurant, although we fully intend to do this next time.

Location is ideal - next to the train station and the old city walls.

If you are going to York, treat yourself and stay here!

The first impressions are good - well appointed public rooms and bedrooms. Very impressive Spa area but the actual spa was 'not in use until further notice' which detracted from the rest of the experience. The main gripe was the appalling inattentiveness of the very young and inexperienced staff. In the main they were very pleasant and polite but clearly had no idea of what was expected of them. The suited boys and girls were not co-ordinating their staff and as a result the service was dysfunctional and disjointed. Definitely not appropriate in a hotel that styles itself as a 5* venue. The only two staff members who knew what they were about were the daytime maître D' ( who sadly was not on duty in the evenings ) and Simon the butler ( if they could clone him they would be onto a winner - he's great ! ) Needs some effective management input - quickly..
And the food - pretentious, with miss-matched flavours. Turbot with belly pork, halibut with oxtail, poached pears with cheese straws, burnt chocolate soufflé ( why bother serving it, you weren't going to get away with it ) choux buns with cinnamon cream. Really ? I don't think so ! The chef would do well to concentrate on classic dishes before venturing into the realms of masterchef for the adventurous.

We stayed for two nights . On arrival we were told we couldn't check in till 3pm, due to installation of a new computer system, so off we went and returned at 3pm. To be told our room wasn't ready and we could wait in the lounge, our booking wasn't on the system , despite that other guests were booking in and getting rooms , the receptionist when asked said it was due to the new system and was too complicated to explain , at 3.30 I returned to ask if our room was ready, it wasn't , so asked to speak to the manager. He kindly upgraded us , and we got to our room at 4pm.
Overall the hotel has a cosy elegance, but seems to lack that 5star service , just from observation it seems they value their business travellers more than leisure travellers .
The breakfast and staff in the resturaunt were excellent, but the area is quite small so I would recommend arriving around eight or you will probably have to queue. The concierge and valet staff were excellent too.
If you want to visit the spa you need to book before your arrival.
On the whole it was a lovely stay , but was let down by the lack of polish you expect from all staff at a hotel of this price and star rating
