“Impressive hotel”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

Cedar Court Grand is indeed grand. The location is great, however we didnt realise there was valet parking as when we asked they didnt offer an alternative place to park our car. They proceeded to take our keys and park the car, which we didnt realise would be at abn extra cost (more on that later).
On arrival it was very lovely - doors opened, bags taken to the room, friendly reception. Inside the hotel really is impressive and so stunning.
Our porter was very helpful and told us to come see him so that he could tell us where to go etc in York.
The room was very large and cosy, and the bathroom was very big and had a lovely double-ended bath and heated floors.
We decided to have a drink and soak in the bath, so called down for a bucket of ice - a bit shocked at the price of £5 for frozen water! We would have been happy to collect it ourselves had it have been free.
We went down in the bowels of the hotel to use the pool and hot-tub, which was very ambient and in a very cool setting down in the 'vault'. It was a real treat.
We decided to head into York centre for dinner. It was very quiet being a Sunday night but was a lovely little walk across the bridge and is in a great location to explore York.
We came back to the hotel to smiles and "hello's", very friendly.
In the morning, we called reception to let them know we were soon leaving and we required our car, we soon got a phone-call to confirm which car was ours as there was a little mix-up of keys. Upon check-out, we were charged for our stay and once my fiance had taken the keys, the valet said quietly to the receptionist that indeed there had been a mix-up and yes, please add the valet charge to our bill.
I was not very nice to be given a valet charge that we werent made aware of, and to also leave thinking some people were perhaps not charged for the valet service (maybe the Aston Martin driver who arrived after us...?)
Over-all, the stay was very grand, however I cannot help but compare the other hotels we stayed at who seemed to genuinely care about the guests (or at least were more careful when pretending to like us!)

We stayed for three nights over Remembrance Day weekend. We had a first rate experience. The location is excellent when arriving by train. We had a very large room by English standards. Bathrooms were wonderful, and had heated floors. You control the heat in your room so we could make it nice and toasty. You can walk everywhere in York from here in less than 15 minutes and to the Minster in about five minutes. We did not have time to experience the food or spa at this hotel, but I am sure they are worthy. THIs hotel has our highest endorsement and I would search for a reason to return.

Dear Guest

Thank you for reviewing your recent stay with us.

I am pleased that you found our location of great convenience. The Railway station is only a short walk from our hotel and, as you experienced, once in York most of the attractions, restaurants, cafes and, of course, all the fantastic shops are within easy walking distance.

What a pity you had no time to experience our beautiful Spa or excellent restaurant. Perhaps that could be the perfect reason to return...

We hope to welcome you back some time in the future.

Best wishes

From the moment we arrived to the minute we left the staff at the hotel made us feel like we were the only guests at the hotel. Nothing was too much trouble and the pleasant ambiance as we strolled around the hotel made us wish we had stayed longer. The rooms were clean, well apportioned and comfortable.
We did not eat in for evening meal, but you don't need to as you are so central for many traditional pubs and restaurants. The menu was tempting though.....
The breakfasts were substantial and the friendly banter between us and the staff again made us feel so much at home.
If your budget allows it, this is a must for your wish list. Situated in an ideal place for walking the York Wall, visiting the Railway museum, paying a "must-do" visit to the Minster or just wandering to the shops in the Shambles, Cedar Court is the place to start. You won't regret it...

Room Tip: We were there with friends - both rooms were fantastic

My husband and I loved this hotel. The room was very spacious with incredibly high ceilings. We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful and just very welcoming. It is also in a great location with a fairly short walk into York centre. We would definitely stay again.

What a lovely hotel. The twin room was spacious and comfortable, the staff were charming, nothing was too much trouble. After one night there I felt totally at home! I can't remember when I last felt so rested and well looked-after, I would definitely go back just for that. However, the Hotel is so central and handy for the city and train station, when I eventually did go out it was perfect from that point of view too. I ate at the Grill at the Grand restaurant within the hotel, which was great, and used the gym and spa, which were also every bit as luxurious as you would expect. If you're going to York and feeling flush, this is the place to stay!

Whowever recruits/trains the staff should be credited with a great policy. Were tested and not one was found wanting. All staff to be complimented! Was flattered we had been remembered from previous visit and found no offence in use of names. Nice touch. If you haven't stayed at the Grand then you must. It is a magnificent building. If you have to ask the price, perhaps it is not for you.Had a fabulous well appointed 4th floor room. This had a recurrence of a problem we had 12 months ago with a 4th floor room . Staff provided an upgrade to 3rd floor. Fine, Spacious room with a (awful) sitting room. This room had minimal natural light. If we'd stayed more that two nights - claustrophobic. Only see through window had view of the multi-storey car park. Ate in bar; the sandwiches are huge! (Get one between two.) Ate in The Grill and the meal sensible portion control and delicious for the £100 plus price for two! Stay again? Hope so but still working on the answer to the question.

Room Tip: Talk to the hotel. I found the website confusing.

This was a fantastic place to have a short break. Every member of staff wanted to be there they were so helpful, friendly and approachable. The building is beautifully decorated and the Spa a delight to swim in.

It is a few minutes walk from the centre of York and exactly the same from the Train station, walking pace. It was just a delight.

Room Tip: Every room had its own little speciality, so if you would rather have a large bathroom, ask, or you...
