“5 star service from start to finish”
Reviewed March 21, 2012

We have just return from a weekend trip to York and had the pleasure of staying at the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa.
Whilst I tend not to "slum it" when it comes to lodgings, I have only stayed in 5 star hotels on relatively few occasions. That being said, the Cedar Court can hold its own with any of the 5 star hotels I have stayed in previously.

Before we had even entered the hotel, Paul the doorman had relieved us of our bags and showed us to reception. We were able to check in well in advance of the stated 3pm check in time and Paul escorted us to our room and gave us a thorough explaination of the room features (although he managed to make a simple hotel room hotel room sound very complicated!). Paul seemed very knowledgeable about the hotel and informed us that, despite being over 100 years old, the building was only converted into a hotel 2 years ago.

Despite booking a standard (Classic) Room I was very pleased to see how large the room was, this would have been classed as a large Junior Suite in many London hotels! The bathroom was also very large and well kitted out with Molton Brown toiletries.
We were then offered a complimentary tea & coffee served in our room before we headed out to see the sites and sounds of York.

Upon returning from a hard days' shopping and sightseeing we returned to the hotel and decided to go for a swim down at the spa, which was very well appointed.
That evening we went for a night cap in the hotel bar. Prices were actually not all that bad for a 5 star hotel bar - about £4 for a bottle of lager and £7 for a cocktail.

The following morning we enjoyed the continental breakfast in the restaurant. Whilst I did initially think that £15 was a bit steep for a breakfast that didnt include bacon or sausage (that was extra), we were very impressed with the offering and can vouch for the fact that £15 is not expensive for the quality and range of the breakfast and the surroundings in which it was served. Gillian, Natalie and Dael looked after us impeccably.

There were 1 or 2 small niggles to mention: the temperature control for the shower was broken so I could not adjust the temperature of the water, which was rather warm (I wasn't using that layer of skin anyway!) and the control for the tv volume in the bathroom didn't work properly. Neither of these were of any detriment to my enjoyment of one of the most pleasurable hotel stays I have experienced in a long while.

The hotel itself was immaculately appointed (the lifts were VERY shiny!) and included the widest hotel corridors I have ever seen. The staff were exceptional and all the staff were attentive but not intrusive.

All in all I would not hesitate to recommend the Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa. From previous experience I would expect to pay 3 or 4 times what this stay cost me to have a similar standard of hotel and service in other parts of the country. Excellent from start to finish!!

Room Tip: Whilst our room was on the front of the hotel, we heard from other guests that rooms on the side of...

This is a really good hotel. We stayed two nights on room only rate – Booked through Lastminute.com – sale promotion – cheaper than booking with hotel directly. The reception team, doorman, concierge were friendly, helpful, enlightening and well-organized. This “Staff” experience continued through Housekeeping, Spa and Waiting Staff – even the cleaners in the public areas. Everyone had time for you. We booked a Classic Double room which was very large, very well appointed, contemporary and comfortable. The marble bathroom was large and even had a heated floor. The toilet was separate from the bathroom and again had a heated floor. York has some superb restaurants we ate out on the first night (Japanese) and in the hotel on the second night. The food was delicious. Perfectly cooked, delightfully presented and the service again was friendly and efficient. Could not have faulted any part of the food or service. The wine list was impressive but prices for some wines well “marked up” but also a decent selection at £20 to £30. Excellent range of Champagnes. The only suggestion I could make was to have the tables a little further spaced. If you unfortunately end up sitting adjacent to “chatty people” you get little or no privacy. Park your car at the Railway Station long stay – weekends especially work out as excellent value for money. The Spa / Pool facilities are second to none. Virtually had the place to ourselves on the Sunday. The location is very convenient being a mere 10 minute walk from all the main attractions in York. We could have stayed in a Premier Inn for £80.00 per night so £94.50 per night is exceptional value. Would definitely return to this Hotel.

Arrived at the hotel to be greeted the moment i stepped out of my car. This set the tone for the rest of my stay. The staff couldnt do enough for you. Hotel room was plain but very comfortable. I would highly recommend the Cedar Court.

If i was to pick out any negative, it would be the hidden charge for the parking but that is minor and other attributes out way this

In relation to your comment on car parking - To inform guests prior to arrival this charge is indeed mentioned on booking confirmation, our own website and all 3rd party booking web sites so therefore there are no “hidden charges”.

I stayed at the Cedar Grand in February for a weekend. We had a junior suite which was perfectly nice and clean but the furnishings were a bit dated. There was a separate room with a large couch but it was very cold even with the heat turned up so we were not really able to use it. The concierge service was spotty, we contacted them before we visited about reservations while one was booked, the second restaurant we wanted was closed until a week before our arrival but prior to making that reservation, our contact went on vacation and did not transition our request in his absence. Luckily we were able to get the reservation when we arrived. The bar area was very comfortable. The hotel is within walking distance from the train station and in an excellent location in the Medieval City.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review following your recent stay with us.

I’m pleased overall that you enjoyed your stay with us. It’s a shame that in your opinion the furnishing s in your bedroom were “dated”. In fact, All of our 107 en suite rooms were refurbished less than 2 years ago when the hotel opened in May 2010. I will pass on your other comment to relating to our Concierge service to our Head Concierge.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the team at The Grand, we look forward to welcoming you back to us in the future.

Our first time in this hotel , A little disappointing in some parts of the hotel ,room very plain ,,, And please be so carefull getting in and out of the bath tub , My wife fell getting into the bath , the bath needs something to hold onto to get in and out of the tub ( very high ), our room was 303 .
The hallways looked more like a hospital corridor very clinical ,not paintings or anything on the walls ,
The good part was food was very nice and the staff very friendly ,
If honest not sure if we would go back ,
Only done a few reviews but have done a lot of hotels in our time

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to write this review following your recent stay with us.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed the food and service but naturally disappointed that some parts of our interior décor were not to your personal taste.
We feel that the Hotel is extremely well decorated in keeping with the buildings style and class.. A lot of time, effort, investment and of course TLC was put in to the restoration of this Grade 2 listed former Great North Eastern Railway HQ to bring it back to its former glory. Cedar Court Hotels worked closely with English Heritage when restoring the property and we have also received much praise from many a channel.

On behalf of myself and the rest of the team at The Grand, we look forward to welcoming you back to us in the future.

This is a really good hotel. We stayed one night on a Dinner Bed & Breakfast rate. The lady who took the booking was friendly, helpful, informative and efficient. This experience continued from the moment of arrival, through checking in, eating and departure. We had an Executive room which was large, very well appointed and comfortable. The marble bathroom was large and even had a heated floor. We left the room at 7:30pm to go down for dinner and on our return the bathroom had been serviced, the towels and soaps etc. replaced. True 5 star service. We did also look at a standard "classic" room and a "De-Luxe" Room. They all had the same level of furnishings and appointments and seemed to differ only in size. Some had only a shower above the bath instead of a separate shower. All would have been comfortable. Although York has some fine restaurants we ate in the hotel out of sheer convenience. The food was delicious. Perfectly cooked, delightfully presented and the service again was friendly and efficient. Could not have faulted any part. The Dinner inclusive rate allowed full choice from the a la carte menu and in fact turned out cheaper than paying on the evening. The wine list was impressive with some eye-watering prices for some very fine wines but also a decent selection at £20 to £40. The location is very convenient being a mere 10 minute walk from all the main attractions in York. They park your car and bring it back the next morning outside the hotel to take away whenever is convenient. I wouldn't fault anything and would compliment everything on being done with style and good grace. Reception staff, Concierge and porters, housekeeping who all said good morning as you passed, and waiting staff in the restaurant were all helpful, friendly and efficient.

The hotel exceeded our expectations, staff were very professional and friendly . We were offered a complimentary room upgrade to a beautful executive room which was greatly appreciated. The location was central to everything too.
If there was a negative it would have to be the water -- the shower was a let down due to lack of pressure so stick to a bath.
Will definately visit this hotel again and will recommend to all.
Thanks again for a perfect short break.
