I found the quilts fabulous...some people have so much patience. The modern samples done by the guild were so creative. Lovely building (once you can find it) and you can walk back along the city walls.

I love that in Britain you can find textiles in so many places--many of the items something completely new--to me at least! This summer's show of antique quilts on display in the spacious 15th century hall in York was engaging. The quilts were almost all 200 years old and diplayed exquisite needle skill and fascinating fabrics. Some were in remarkable condition--bright colors, no wear--obviously prized by their owners over the years.

The quilts were accompanied by historic notes and interesting details that invited you to look more closely. The quilts were spaced well apart, allowing viewing from most sides and the chance to examine them closely without blocking out other viewers.

I meant to go back after lunch, but the museum shut at 4 (it was a long lunch in a wonderful adjacent Italian cafe!) to examine the books on sale in the shop--so I'll have to find time to return. That won't be too hard! Perhaps re-visit the Minster too!

The friend who took me there advises that the exhibits are changing--some being better than others--so you might check the Museum website before going--http://www.quiltmuseum.org.uk/

Thank you so much for your review. I am very glad you enjoyed your visit to the exhibition of some of our earliest patchworks. You are quite right about the fabrics - some of them look like new, and all handstitched. Hope to welcome you again sometime.

I strongly recommend a visit to this small but fascinating museum /gallery. Staffed by knowledgable and friendly volunteers it contains a wonderful collection of quilts from the 18th to the 21st century, as well as other objets d'art. ( exhibitions change from time to time). It is situated in a fine medieval building and surrounded by a really lovely garden ( great for picnics!) and next to a good Italian Trattoria. There is a small shop selling all kinds of goodies for the keen craftsperson.
Less than 10 minutes walk from the touristy crowds of the Shambles this is an oasis of peace.Buy your sandwiches from MnS and carry them to the garden of the Quilt museum before enjoying the treasure within.

If you are interested in quilting then this is a must. Even if you don't quilt and like art do go. The exhibition is so good. It changes every so often so worth going every time you visit York. There ladies who quilt working as volunteers so you can see them working on their latest creation, such talented ladies and so knowledgable.
