We discovered this little gem about a year and a half ago when we got bored with paying way too much for what you get at Cafe Nero round the corner down Goodramgate opposite Cross Keys. And what a find!
Kafeneion is technically a Greek-style cafe, but if you want something self-indulgent don't let that put you off! As soon as you enter you're treated to a massive display of cakes, brownies and the like. The coffee is to die for - the only coffee chain which comes close to it is Pret. There's a great choice of food from the more breakfast/afternoon tea assortments, to paninis, bagels and salads. No matter what you order, it'll be wonderful. The food is always freshly prepared in the kitchen and the staff at front of house are also friendly and polite, but not over-imposing. In fact one of the things I like is that it's laid out like a restaurant, but you can go up and order when you like. The staff then bring all the food to you.
Now the prices are similar to that of Cafe Nero or Pret, but the difference here is that they are most definitely worth what you get. The quality of the food is second to none, and they also give you loyalty cards for both food and drink, there's a 20% student discount (good for me!) and free wireless (and if you're a regular they give you extra discounts on top of that!).
Me and my boyfriend come here regularly, and so far we've yet to find anywhere like it that beats it.
They're now also doing a nightlife style thing for evenings (I think you get discounts on alcohol or something but I'm not sure) and Kafeneion has now extended its opening hours.
A truly underrated cafe. If you're in York I highly recommend going there!
