Description: Nineteen Restaurant is a sophisticated little gem nestled in York's vibrant Grape Lane. Situated in one of York's oldest buildings, dating back to 1437, Nineteen provides a relaxing and contemporary atmosphere. The assured menu boasts plenty of fresh seafood and local North Yorkshire produce. Popular dishes include the Whitby fish pie with cheesy topping and the char-grilled ribeye steak served with Bearnaise and triple cooked chips. If that's not enough to make your date doe-eyed, try reminding them that Grape Lane was once an infamous institution in York's old red light district, known to locals as Grope Lane.

stumbled upon this without reservations on a Sunday stroll through the old part of York

we were seated upstairs with a wonderful view down an ancient street

what a wonderful surprise- 3 hearty courses for a very reasonable sum and a high value wine list to boot.

our top meal in York-highly recommended

If you like food with a twist and want to try something different nineteen is the restaurant for you!!
The menu is very unusual and combines food in a very unique way all served to the highest standard of presentation!! The staff were really knowledgable about the food and very friendly service is also quick and efficient.
Would highly recommend this restaurant but it isn't cheap but certainly worth it ... The deserts are a must!

Ate here for an anniversary dinner and we weren't disappointed. The new spring menu had just started so it was different to that shown on the website. I had scallops to start and they were delicious, though for the price I think they could have served 3 instead of 2. My partner hasthe duck tartare which he didn't enjoy, no fault of the chef, just a poor choice on his part. We noth had rump of lamb for our main which came served with a small mutton shepherds pie. The whole thing was absolutely delicious. For pud wehad a banana souffle and a tribute to Terry's both again delicious. Overall an excellent dinner accompaniedby an excellent and well priced bottle of Malbec.

Last night has just demonstrated me that there is magic in chef's hands! When last year, this restaurant was taken over by a young chef, I thought that he would be able to bring a breath of fresh air to the restaurant scene in York. And now that he has put his new menu on, with dishes that are his, he has achieved just that, and with creativity!
In the starters there are at least 4 dishes that I was wondering about and would have loved to try, in the end I went for the duck tartare, served with a balsamic sorbet, it worked very well together and all was seasoned correctly. Same for the Main course, I never go for Chicken in a restaurant, as it is a very difficult dish to get right, but this one with lemon thyme and truffle worked! served with spring vegetables (healthy too!), it was fresh, tasty, with the right texture and the right amount of everything.
The wine list is to die for, with great choices by the glass, from all destinations, and for all palates and wallet.
I am so pleased to be able to have tried the new menu, and I will go for more.

This is a fantastic place. If you can't get a table straight away, there 's a Slug and Lettuce round the side but make sure you wait for a table it's well worth it. The food is high quality produce cooked simply but expertly. The spring lamb is to die for as is the Blue cheese creme brulee. Highlight of the weekend.
