“You cant beat an "Owner owned and run Restaurant!"”
Reviewed August 11, 2010

The only way you can consistently offer top quality freshly prepared cuisine is to keep closely involved with it. At the Go Down, the Head Chef and front of house are the owners, therefore they manage to pull off what most restaurants cant... constantly good food with a genuinely welcoming atmosphere!.
Ok I agree the decor may be a little dated, but they are refurbishing it on an ongoing basis and i i would much rather be assured of tasty freshly cooked food, locally sourced, by a proper Chef, who cares about his customers, than a load of kids slamming pre-prepared convenience catering food solutions from Brake Bros,in a speed cooker in an "all show and no action" wannabe chain restaurant.(a few of them in York),
Well done !
Look forward to our next visit!.

“Good food, friendly staff, old-fashioned decor”
Reviewed July 18, 2010

Good meal, fairly priced for two sets of four courses and a nice wine (approx. £90) and very friendly staff. The restaurant itself needed to be decorated, but the tables and chairs were nice, and it was clean.

The wine selection was poor and on the cheap end, but not disastrously cheap. The food was well cooked and the portions were fare/

“Consistently excellent”
Reviewed July 12, 2010

Being York residents we have eaten at most places in the city, but always seem to return to The Go Down. The quality of the food combined with the friendly service is consistently good and has been for many years. The variety of dishes on offer is large enough to satisfy everyone and all come in very generous portions. My current favourite is the somewhat plainly named Mixed Fish. This is King Prawns, Red Snapper Fillet and Salmon Fillet all covered in a light, Tempura style batter and served with a wonderfully tangy lemon mayonnaise. An Early Bird menu is also available and a lot of the dishes on offer here are slightly smaller versions of the main menu. Fantastic value, and ideal if you are popping across the road to the Theatre afterwards.
Can't wait for another excuse to go back!!
