The web site for The Lamb and Lion and its sister venue, the Guy Fawkes, looked amazing but unfortunately didn`t quite live up to our expectations. The location is brilliant but if you go for a Petite Double, be warned that it really is quite small. Granted it is an old building and its been refurbished to a high standard but it could have been cleaner. Although extremely friendly, the staff were extremely unorganised and didn`t seem to know what they were doing. This place has great potential but just seems to be lacking ia little in the things that make you want to go back !!

My wife and I stayed there in Dec for a special birthday. Booked back in April and we had visited the restaurant when it was High Petergate and the food was fab. At time of booking also booked table in restaurant for sat night dinner. No notification it had changed hands or they had no restaurant anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just a pub now with letting bedrooms, over priced for what it is. Complained to De Bretton who dont even have the decency to respond. Definately would never stay there again. Our room was ok with en suite facilities but that is all that can be said. The reception doubles up as the main bar and we had to wait ages every time we wanted to ask something or even check out.

My husband and I stayed here in February for a birthday treat. I managed to secure a 2-4-1 deal via their website. Basically all we had to do was eat in one of their other restaurants/inns and our second night B&B was free.
I honestly can't see why some people have given this place a negative rating. The Inn is absolutely charming and everything you'd want to find in a medieval city - dark corners, open fires and lots and lots of character.
Yes, you have to check in at the bar, the cooked breakfast is served at the nearby Guy Fawkes Inn and the rooms are a little quirky, but really if that's too much trouble for you then you're probably best at a soul-less hotel chain advertised by Lenny Henry.
The only reason I didn't give the Lamb and Lion 5 stars was due to the confusion of their offers and details about where to get breakfast and what restaurants were involved in the 241 accommodation deal. A bit more of an explanation of things during check-in would have been helpful.
Other than that, perfect location, lovely fresh and clean furnishings and very friendly staff.
Staying in York? Stay here.

  • Liked — Fantastic accommodation in the heart of York, a stone's throw from York Minster.
  • Disliked — Nothing really - other than not a huge amount of info at check in, and no credit card machine to pay the bill!
