Great place to stay if you are exploring the area in and around York.
The hosts Cath and Paul made us feel very welcome and always available to help with any requests we had, even going to the trouble of printing off a train time table of the local service which enabled us to travel to York by rail instead of taking the car.
Our room was very comfortabe and clean and although it's a small touch the convenience of having clothes hooks on the back of the bedroom and bathroom door was a welcome convenience that a lot of big hotels don't seem to have any more!
We enjoyed having a small sitting room just off the bedroom which made it more spacious and enjoyable to go back to after a day of sightseeing.
The gardens are lovely and we enjoyed a couple of late evening walks around the lake, very peaceful and relaxing before settling down for the night.
Breakfast was freshly cooked, tasty and plentiful.
There is a great Italian restaurant just a two minute drive away with a good selection of takeaways and is reasonably priced.
The only downside to The Willows is the fact that the driveway leading to the house is situated off a busy main road which makes it a little dangerous to walk anywhere outside the grounds but it's just a short drive away to the lovely village of Poppleton where we recommend parking up your car and taking the bus or train to York town centre which will take around 10/15mins.

We stayed for four nights and found the location nice and central for driving to the many places of interest in and around York, i.e the Jorvik centre, Bronte Parsonage, Mother Shipton's cave etc. The owners were very helpful with travel tips and advice. Our room and ensuite bathroom were very clean and comfortable and we had a lovely view over looking the fishing lake. The owners also suggested some good places to eat all within a few minutes drive. There was plenty of parking space, well lit by a security light at night.
Any queries were delt with quickly and at the end of our stay the owners were happy to accept a cheque.

We stayed here without booking. After driving through a snowstorm we needed somewhere to sleep, and this was the first we came to.

When we rang from the end of the driveway to check the price the man yelled out to his wife " There is a [--] booking on the phone!" Not such a good start, especially when the [--] booking is listening. My wife and I had a little chuckle, thinking that it was a simple mistake. We found out the husband is fond of this sort of language. We were quoted £70 for the night, but it was not worth anywhere near that.

When you knock on the door you are greeted by the sound of two large dogs barking, a noise you will hear whenever someone comes to the door. We went up stairs to look at the rooms, both of them. the first room is smaller and has a double bed in it, the other is larger and has a sitting room. When we looked at this room the husband was making the bed, actually to us it looked like he was only straightening the sheets from the customers before. We took the first smaller bedroom where the bed was already made (or straightened??). The man brought a fold-out cot in for the daughter, dumped it and left. We were left to assemble it and make it.

The bathroom was small, and any man over 5'5" would have a challenge using the loo due to the slope of the roof, I am very tall so had a real job using the toilet. The bathroom smelt musty and wasn't particularly clean. The TV was temperamental and went blank occasionally. Not all stations were available either.

Breakfast was the real shocker. We had ordered our breakfasts the night before, just a simple cooked breakfast with 2 runny eggs, extra bacon and brown bread. What we got was dried up eggs, overcooked sausage, bacon and white toast. When I mentioned about the ordered food the man just brought some freshly microwaved baked beans in a plastic bowl, slopped them on my plate and made it clear that was it.

The B&B is part of a fish farm, and if you really like fishing there MAY be something going for it. As a B&B it is rubbish. The owners have no customer service skills whatsoever and we felt as if they were doing us a favour by letting us stay there.

We were forced to pay in cash, and no receipt was offered.

We will not recommend this business to anyone, and it stands out as probably the worst stay we had on our journey. If you are dead tired and are looking for a convenient bed for the night this definitely not it

Rooms very clean but you have to pay cash. Only 2 letting rooms with breakfast served on a cramped landing at a single table for the 4 guests. Badly lit at night and cash only. Food was good but no choice
