We visited here last Friday on a visit to York. We both had pigeon for starters. It was cooked to perfection and a large portion.

We had the venison main course which had three different styles of venison and were all cooked to perfection also.

We had cheese board for dessert. This had generous portions of a variety of cheese. This was enjoyed with a glass of port.

The waiters were very attentive and seemed genuinely happy while serving.

The overall experience was good and it was reasonably priced also. I recommend anyone to give it a try.

My husband and I were on a short break to York to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We also visited this restaurant last year and we enjoyed it so much we wanted to eat there again. We pre booked via their Internet booking service which was very easy. We chose the set menu which was excellent value. We both chose the haddock fish cakes to start, my husband opted for the beef stroganoff to follow and I had the chicken breasts with pancetta. My husband had an interesting version of apple crumble and I had the Eton Mess. The service was friendly and professional and although the restaurant was quiet for a Wednesday evening, it still had enough ambiance for a romantic meal. We will definitely return when we are next in York.

Ate as a party of three tonight. Great food. Had the mushroom tart to start, delicious, lots of topping not just puff. Other two had pork and sesame with they both agreed was great. Main was risotto with goats cheese, was given a proper bit of cheese with it so was very impressed. At first was disappointed by the serving size but it's a VERY filling meal and had the right amount of rocket. Boyfriend had sea bream which he enjoyed and friend had leg of duck which she raved about. Dessert was eton mess with strawberries, was nicely presented. The other two had brownie and sticky toffee pudding which they both loved. Was greeted in a friendly manner, was asked to try the wine after we'd ordered and service was good. Waiting times were excellent and we weren't left waiting long for food. Given nice warm bread with oil and vinegar on arrival. Ignore the pedantic reviews that don't like this place. They seem to think they were paying for the ritz of something. It's excellent value for money and the food is delicious. We were never rushed with our eating, never made to feel a hassle and were spoken to politely. Would highly recommend and will return.

Having booked after reveiws on tripadvisor was disappointed overall. Was expecting classy restaurant with some nice nosh !! What we got was overcooked belly pork, scallops and steak. Not a very atmospheric dining room and jus / sauces on all dishes tasted similar !! Undercooked potatoes and unimaginative veg accompaniments. Staff friendly and attentive but it was friday evening and should of been very busy but wasn't !!

I visited this restaurant at lunchtime as part of a group of eight. Things started slightly shakily when we were told we all had to eat off either the lunch menu or the main menu. Fortunately, however, we were all happy with the lunch menu. The food was first class, freshly cooked and served to perfection. The risotto was particularly good, as was the sticky toffee pudding. The setting is very atmospheric, enhanced by the fact that the floor slopes slightly. This was the best meal I have had in York. I am looking forward to my next visit!
