The pub was ok- not the best in town but enjoyable with good beer. Accommodation was appalling -seemingly only two rooms available and the upstairs was derelict as mentionedby the proprietor/ manager.. Underneath the bed was a few weeks' debris, during the nght the sash window fell down and we had to wedge it, the room was much too small and at gbp60 was poor value compared to a Best Western Hotel at Gbp80 in South Shields. The breakfast was fine as a fry up and the manager and staff were very friendly and obliging. In a good position- most of accommodation being large converted houses up the hill away from the centre.

We stayed off here two days running to enjoy a pint(or three) in the sun outside of the pub. The beer was very good, great place to watch the world go by. We didnt eat here but the food looked good with huge portions and it was certainly cheap. There was a rather vocal woman working there, complanining that nothing in the place was working and a rude (bordering on aggressive) young lad (of about 15) who seemed to think we were there as an inconvenience. (he told a patron that they were looking for a slap!) It was a bit of an experience, the blokes behind the bar were welcoming and chatty which seemed to redress the balance.

Slightly shabby pub on the harbourside. Very friendly and welcoming service. The beer I had (Absolution) was outstanding, one of the best pints I have had for several years. Food is typical pub style: e.g. locally caught fish with chips and four types of curry. We stopped there as it has a number of tables on a terrace overlooking the harbour.

We didn't stay in the this inn, so I cannot comment on the accomodation.

Me and my friend arrived at the pier inn after travelling to whitby to check into our rooms only to find out their was some sort of mistake as a BLOND 40ish looking member of the staff was basically rudely just saying to us "sorry but you have not booked a room, the book says so!!" After a few minutes of assuring her that we had booked as it was on our credit card statement and also we had rang and checked a few days before. She was most unhelpful and reapeatley kept on saying the same thing. Then she was very Abrupt with my friend and started to raise her voice just because she was basically asking to go check with someone and find out what was happening as we had nowhere to stay. I told her to calm down as it was obviously a mistake and asked if i could look at the book as we were getting absolutly nowhere, when i did it was there quite simple "THE MISTAKE" we were infact booked in as i saw our phone number but with someone else's name! the names were nothing even like similiar, but i ended up doing her job for her. Then she rudely gave us the key to our room and told us where it was. she did not mention that their was another door to use for when the pub closed, she did not tell us when breakfast was served and she did not tell us when we needed to be checked out. We got to our room which was fine ish but freezin, the windows were left open and all the towels and beds were damp. Also the heating did not work we found out later in the evening and were handed a conventional heater by 2 male member s off staff we managed to find, it was those too that told us about the side door to get in and also the 2 keys we had been handed were infact for the side door and the one to our room.
On leaving we couldn't wait to leave as we'd had enough of the rude service and the same brutal blond member of staff was on. she saw us but looked away and started chatting to someone else, another member of staff i think. i gave up totally in the end handed the key on the bar and told her we was leaving.
AVOID IF YOU DONT LIKE RUDE PEOPLE!!!

Room Tip: Book another hotel or b&b

Located at the pier end of town with its amusement arcades, fortune teller's booth and confectionery shops, the Pier Inn overlooks the harbour and, the day I went in, a nice warm welcoming log burning stove was going to take the chill off a cold, damp day.

Tom Jones was singing out from the canned music system followed by 'When Irish Eyes are Smiling' - which gives an idea of the tempo of the place!

The food is good wholesome pub grub - £6.95 across the board for lunchtime meals. I always opt for a fish dish and I am never disappointed. Amongst the chef's specials was haddock (which was huge), chips, peas and bread and butter, all for £7.50.

Family friendly, at busy lunchtimes table numbers tend to get a bit confused at times but dishes usually arrive at the right tables in good time while they're still hot.

I return to this hostelry every year when I stay in Whitby and am always taken with the pictures of local views which adorn the walls, the low wooden beamed ceilings, dark wooden tables, wood panelling, wooden floors, leather padded trestles and chairs which all contribute to a bit of an old fashioned ambience. Diners and drinkers comprise the patrons on one side of the establishment while there is a pool table at the other side for those of a mind to play.

There are tables and chairs outside too so, on sunny days, these tend to get taken rather quickly by families or by those just wishing to soak up the sun.

One observation though, the Pier Inn could well do with a bit of sprucing up. A lick of paint on the walls and ceilings would not go amiss and would certainly brighten the place up as it looks as if it hasn't been painted since before smoking was banned!

Room Tip: Opt for a room with a harbour/sea view.

as a customer at the same time as lee899 on 10 april all i can say is you were rude to the waitress who only served not cooked it and when you spoke to the manager with your complaint could you have done it without swearing in front of other customers also why did you refuse to eat an alternative meal which you requested? The pier inn is now under new ownership so please call in and try the new menu and i am not involved in anyway just disgusted at your sad attempt at complaining
