“Will not be returning”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

The hotel itself is in a very convenient location. But we were disappointed to find that our room smelt like someone had died in it. The smell was offensive. Unfortunately due to booking the weekend in August (the same weekend as a folk festival- which was brilliant) we were unable to find alternative accommodation. The hotel staff at first tried to ignore the issue despite one receptionist slipping up and admitting that she knew why it smelt so bad and it had something to do with the previous resident. Which was somewhat off-putting. We were than bought cheap air-fresheners from a local shop. To be fair to the hotel after some persistent negotiation on our part we were offered a £50 refund on the price of the room (a third of what we paid for it). But we were treat in a dismissive way to start with which was disappointing. The pub being in the convenient location it is also lacked parking and we had to pay in a local car park. We were also disappointed with the breakfast which was served in the pub night club area in the basement and the floor when we went down for breakfast was still a bit sticky from drink and didn't smell that great either and had run out of coffee on the second morning we were there. Can't fault the location though and the room if it hadn't smelt would have been perfectly comfortable. The shower temp gauge was also broken in the shared bathroom and the light bulb gone in the other windowless shower-room. With a few small improvements this could be a great hotel.

Quite good, clean , tidy, reasonably priced. Directly opposite the Bus station with the train station next to that. Modern interior for the pub, can get quite loud for televised football matches, but, that soon disappears when its finished. The hotel is decorated modern/contemporary with access only by issued key cards. No lift and plenty of stairs. Didn't have anything to eat here purely too busy sightseeing. The bar prices are very reasonable. Bedroom was modern too, the only things that could possibly go against it is the en-suite was looking tired, shower was really powerful, the window catches were broken, meaning you could easily fall from a third storey window. Bit of noise from passing revellers, but that is to be expected as its in a very central location. Would be happy to recommend this to people.

Stayed here for the 3rd time over bank holiday weekend and its clear the hotel has been refurbished since our last stay. Check in does feel a bit strange as you have to walk through the bar to the tiny reception, however once checked in your keycard allows access to the hotel via a back entrance so you don't have to go through the bar every time. Rooms were clean and decent size. Bathroom was quite large but the shower was tiny and a bit of a squeeze! We were on the third floor and never noticed any noise from the bar below. The hotel is on the main road in Whitby which means its very central to everything. The George is fine for a night or two for couples and groups but probably wouldn't be suitable for a longer break or for families.

This is a pub with rooms, it includes non interested owners dirty stained rooms, a reception that takes some finding on first visit, as no signage.
Parking 2 miles away at the Abbey car park.
Good breakfast served and cooked by uninterested owner.

Better to book a B&B on other side of Whitby.

Stayed at this hotel for one night, which was certainly one night too many. Staff not very friendly, girl asked us to sign a document , which was telling us what we were not allowed to do in the hotel, I wish I had produced the same for the hotel. It may have got me somewhere, although I doubt it , they dont care what you think, they have there share of the business in Whitby and really dont want repeat business, and they will certainly not get it from me. Very small attic room , calling itself a double, bathroom so small that any larger guest would simply have not been able to use the bathroom. IE over 5ft 6, more than 11 stone..... terrible terrible. wardrope was only for show, not big enough to hang shirts , due to a shelf not good for dresses either. could not open window( worrying fire hazard) Staff did not care, we had to stay as Whitby was full. Spoilt one night of a very long awaited holiday. Dont stay, dont book, just dont do it.. Weatherspoons have opened a new hotel in Whitby, stay there. A company who knows how to treat customers..

Room Tip: Dont book, look elsewhere.

This was my first visit to Whitby for an overnight stay. First lets get the parking situation out of the way. Their is parking at £6.00 for 24 hours and its only cross the road and in a safe part of this seaside town at endeavour car park. The Hotel bearing in mind Whitby is a fishing village doesn't have its own car park as it near the train station and near the harbour, so their isn't any space for one. The Hotel itself is clean, the food is great, it suited for me and my friends as we wanted to meet people. The Hotel certainly has some fab entertainment, with having an underground Disco and good priced beer which after trying a few other public houses, it was found their was a big difference in price. I will go back to the Hotel again.

Booked last minute to stay in Whitby for a few days, The George Hotel had two rooms for me and my family. The rooms were simple, but were clean, spacious and had everything we needed. One of the rooms was on the top floor, which was quite a trek, as there was no central staircase or lift, you went up three different staircases with a corridor in between. However, this was not that far and didn't provide much of a problem. It was only annoying when carrying suitcases on arrival and departure. To check-in and out you had to walk in through the bar, which felt a little strange. However, once checked in you could use a back entrance using a provided key card.
There was quite a lot of noise from the bar area below, as the hotel runs karaoke and club nights until around 2am on some nights. This was not a problem for the room on the top floor, however, for the other room on the first floor it was very loud and ear plugs were required for some!
The free continental breakfast was simple, however, it had more choice than some continental breakfasts I have been offered at hotels before so cannot complain about it at all. There is also the option of a cooked breakfast for £5.50, which can be requested the day before. None of us had it and so I cannot comment on its quality.
The location of the hotel is very good, being a short walk to the centre of Whitby, shops, restaurants and the train station.
All in all it was good for a short stay!

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors are quieter, but have a longer walk to get to.
