“Expected better”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2014

I don't normally do guest houses and therefore have nothing to compare it with but, I expected better and the price I paid, it should have been better. Parking was an issue. Basically not enough space or spaces for the people staying, especially those with big cars. Our room wasn't as clean as it should be. Drawers hadn't been emptied let alone cleaned. Carpet was filthy. A previous guest had obviously come in with dirty shoes, sat on the settee and the dirt had transferred to the carpet. I appreciate that you can't clean the carpets between every booking but you can spot clean. Vanish works wonders. The bathroom needed a good bottoming. At night we had the window open as we needed the air, very stuffy. Perfectly reasonable. However, it rained heavily each night, no one can help the weather but outside our room had a small, inaccessible, balcony which sloped. The rain hit the sky dish, making a racket and the rain ran down the slope in a torrent to the extent that, each night, I was woken by the noise. Fine if it doesn't rain. Breakfast was better on the Saturday morning than the Sunday. The young lady waiting tables was very nice and the landlady pleasant. We didn't complain. We went to Whitby with friends, they were equally disappointed, to relax and enjoy ourselves, we didn't want to ruin the stay by complaining. I will not however, be recommending this guest house and I most certainly will not be returning. The rooms were supposed to be deluxe, we were charged more and it was poor value for money. I was disappointed and in future will probably stick to hotels.

Visited Whitby in order to visit town and travel on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway. I booked at the last minute and stayed in a ground floor room with en-suite shower and toilet. Clean and pleasant room with TV and tea making facilities. Slight road noise, not awful but noticeable, probably because of a motorbike rally taking place in the town.
The breakfast was wonderful and generous, taken in a pleasant dining room. The property is about 10 minutes walk from the harbour but is uphill. I was travelling on the train so walked to and from the guest-house.
Really enjoyed my stay and would stay there again. Good value too!

My wife and I decided to weekend in Whitby at the last minute. We travel quite a bit worldwide for our respective jobs, but as I have not been well of late this was our first trip for six months and Whitby is one on my favourite places. We arrived late afternoon and were impressed by the lovely building. We parked in one of the last spaces available and the proprietor showed us to our room which we were told was a 'superior' room with a four poster bed. It was clean, with a decor and furniture not exactly to our taste but with thought. My wife's case was carried to the room for us. We had booked dinner at a restaurant in the centre of town and the proprietor gave us a list of local taxis. The four poster was very imposing with loads of cushions, but the mattress was a bit thin and would benefit from a mattress topper. The following morning we were delighted to find the shower was fantastic, although the shower tray was not ridged and proved a bit slippy. The bathroom was clean and bright. Breakfast we had been told was between 9.00 -9.30 and was served in a light and airy room with designated tables in accordance with one's room. A choice of three cereals, fresh berries, grapefruit segments, plain yoghurt, good quality orange juice were available buffet style. We were asked if we wanted tea or coffee, toast (white or brown) and given a choice of a full English or smoked salmon & scrambled egg. To be hyper critical, why not a full Yorkshire and as we were in Whitby, why no kippers as an alternative. The 'full English' consisted of two slices of bacon, a quality sausage, a fried egg, a few slices of mushrooms and half a small fresh tomato; I could have had baked beans, but I have a thing about beans on a breakfast menu so asked for them to be left off. It was ok, but only ok, where was the black pudding and the fried bread.
Hillcrest is as the name implies is at the top of a steepish hill, but it is not a bad walk about ten minutes from the town and Whitby is hilly anyway. After a good walk around town and a bit of lunch in a charming cafe we got a taxi back which at £4.60 was good value given the aforementioned hill back to Hillcrest. We stayed two nights and breakfast etc was as previously reviewed. At £100.00 per night it wasn't cheap but it was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. The house itself is a beautiful building, but service-wise, apart from free wifi and fresh milk in a small flask on request for the in-room tea and coffee facilities, nothing is done to go the extra mile and make a stay 'special'. One thing we found a bit disconcerting was the noise from the room above ours, the proprietor's private accommodation, which seemed to be someone, perhaps a youngster running about, but it stopped after about an hour on both evenings. We would stay again, but only if we couldn't find something closer to the centre, as Hillcrest did not make you WANT to stay again anytime soon .

my boyfriend and I stayed here just for one night. we absolutely loved everything about it! beautiful guesthouse, lovely decor, friendly staff, very comfy bed and lovely shower, very clean. we stayed in the 'Whitby Room' which is £100 a night, worth every penny. we didn't have breakfast but it smelt amazing. we are coming back on the 18th of this month to the same room for our anniversary and we cannot wait. this time we will be trying that breakfast! see you soon, Jen & Darryl xx

we had a lovely weekend in whitby....staying at the hillcrest guesthouse....a lovely old house , nice clean rooms and a wonderful "full english" yum, yum. the only downfall so to speak was its location ...on a bit ov a steep bank...no probs going down ,but a bit tough on the legs on way back up . however this did not deter us . only 10 min walk into town/harbour ...a nice little find x

My Fiance booked this hotel as a special treat for my birthday and it didn't disappoint. The host was really welcoming and friendly and the breakfasts were very nice and plentiful. On arrival I was lucky enough to be given a choice of which room I would prefer and chose the Whitby purely for the nice big shower and bath though both rooms were lovely. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be telling all my friends about it. Marked down slightly for the sleep quality purely because of the time of year and the fact that it was quite cold at night but this was not the owners fault just the fact that it was the end of November-in hindsight perhaps we should have packed a couple of hot water bottles! The only other thing that would have been nice would have been a DVD player as due to the time of year we spent most of the evening in our room and although you get freeview, on the 2nd night there was nothing on there that we wanted to watch so would have been nice to have been able to watch a film but this is just a tip not a fault. Thanks Steve for a lovely welcome break.

This was our second stay at Hillcrest in 2 years but the hosts were still happy and more than accommodating in making our stay as comfortable as always. We stayed in the same room, which had been redecorated, and was as cosy and comfortable as the previous stay. The breakfasts were more than adequate and we were always asked if we wanted more tea/coffee or toast. There are closer B&B's to the centre, but whenever we return to Whitby, we will always return to Hillcrest.
