Beware, I assumed that this would be open year round. it isn't, so if you are planning a trip check this out to avoid disappointment. The site is surrounded by a wall - you can see the Abbey just about from some spots - but if the site is shut its not that engaging. there is also quite a climb to the site up some steps - so not that great when you reach the top to see the site is shut.

I accept I should have checked - so not a criticism of the site - but I just want to alert others to avoid disappointment.

Went to whitby for our summer holiday and visited whitby abbey. At the time of the visit they had actors doing Dracula and it was absolutely fantastic! The actors and actress were brilliant and the views from the abbey are stunning. The staff are friendly and helpful and the audio guide (at no extra cost) was very interesting. Highly recommend a visit and it's easily accessible by car. Nice little cafe too :)

this wonderful place is beautiful, a little tip, take some snacks or picnic and Bram Stokers book Dracula and while eating and taking in the amazing view get someone to read aloud the first chapter............. you will soon be transported into that gothic horror.

The location is lovely, and the building is great, but the price to get in is a rip off and we weren't even given the audio that we should have got. We spent half an hour at the counter telling the woman we didn't want annual membership as we wouldn't use it and it's expensive for something we wouldn't use. She wouldn't give In, she got out a Map and circled all the heritage sites near where we live, and said we should visit them so buy the membership. All in all a rip off !

I think everything about the place has been covered here. I only want to point out that it might be worth checking for events taking place there. In August thanks to English Heritage actors performing the famous tale brought it to life among the ruins. Time to remember really, but Whitby Abbey is not the only attraction so allow more time.

Wonderful setting, audio tours, specious parking, toilets. gift shop.
