I don't understand the bad reviews for the Bagdale Lodge. I was reluctant to visit there after reading some of the reviews on this site but after staying there for one night I was impressed on the both the room and the value. Myself and eight members of my family stayed there and not one of us had reason to complain. We all thought is was marvelous. At £45 per room, including family rooms which can sleep up to five people, it's an absolute bargain.

Try it for yourself and ignore the bad comments. Some people are never pleased and look for faults with everything.

Booked with a friend on late rooms for 2 nights and were checked into the lodge. I appreciate when booking with late rooms you get a cheap rate, but I thought you got a cheap rate because you were booking late and not because you were getting a dodgy room which resembled being in a youth hostel.
We were put into a family room, it was small, cramped and the only place to put yourself was on the bed as there litterally was no space.

Worst of all was mould everywhere in the shower and the carpet was so filthy dirty I did not want to walk on it without my socks.

Very very dissapointing. Complained at the desk but they really couldnt care less. There attitude is want a clean room, then upgrade and pay the difference. Stayed only 1 night and cancelled the other. They have a fabulous product being the main hotel but refuse to go to the lodge if your put there.

In respose to your review dated october 2006 I wish to apologise on behave of the hotel for the problems you encoutered during your stay at bagdale lodge and to inform you of the measures taken to to ensure that these problems are taken care of.
As from october 2006 we have employed additonal cleaning staff to cope with the demand for the lodge accomodation.
A programme of major refurbishment to the lodge building which will start in early november 2006 which is part of a 2 year expansion and refurbishment at a cost of over 1 million pounds this changes will bring the lodge back to the standards you would expect from us at Bagdale hall hotels ltd.

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights in August, we were in the annexe ( room 16 ) - nice large room with 4 poster and bathroom with power shower. The only drawback is the main road outside which is very noisy.
All staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent, breakfast was huge and high quality and the evening menu was also very good.
The location is ideal for exploring the town with its own parking and easy access to the main roads to the moors and the rest of the coast.
Will certainly return next time we visit this part of the country.

Lodge style accomodation was how this was described when booking a family room through laterooms.com.

The lodge was up a hill from the main hotel - squeezed between a frozen food factory and the hospital.

The room was tiny, dusty and the shower cubicle covered in mould. Windows rattled when someone moved on the floor above and every time anyone used the hot water it sounded like machine gun fire in our room!!

For £45 per night you would be better going to try and find a travelodge - would not recommend this to anyone.

We were quite lucky to get a room just a couple of weeks in advance, in August. It was in the building just away from the main part of the hotel (which meant a walk outside to get breakfast), with a four-poster. Room was fine, bed was the special thing about it (very comfy), bathroom was good. I think what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel.

Great location, very short walk to harbour and all the fish'n'chips you can eat. But it was quiet in the room (though we were at the back, away from the road). Staff all very friendly and helpful. Having space for parking was essential.

Breakfasts were ok - my wife asked for extra crispy bacon and was told that bacon, sausage etc were kept on a hot plate whilst the chef took care of the eggs etc that needed to be cooked fresh. For the price I think I'd expect better. Having said that, the chef did do some extra crispy bacon especially (on one out of two occasions, maybe thanks to the waitress on that occasion).

We didn't eat at the hotel in the evenings because of the great places to go besides (I rate Trenchers top). The old building where the restuarant and some rooms are is amazing though - massive beams and enormous fireplaces.

Whitby itself was good - plenty of fish&chips, but also some nice bistros/cafes. Blustery weather made walks along the cliffs and beach very atmospheric, and the abbey was well done.

So it's a slightly above average 3-star, but quite expensive (we paid £118 pn). Having said that, it was in Whitby in peak season at the weekend, and I've seen it on the web for less.

Me and my husband stayed here for our first anniversary. The room was gorgeous and huge (we stayed in one of the four poster suites). The staff were fantastic and could not have done anything more for us, especially the jag driving barman ;).
We also had our evening meal in the restaurant. The food was fantastic and it was a really nice atmosphere.
It is a brilliant base for discovering Whitby as it is so close to the center of town.
The hotel has real charm and i can't wait to plan a return journey.
