“Beautiful traditional cottage in the heart of Whitby”

Terry and Annabelle's cottage is spacious and warm, perfect for our near yearly trip to Whitby. Well equipped for a family or group of friends. It's a very short stroll to the town centre. The exposed ceiling joists and expressed chimney brickwork are a delight! Highly recommended.

“Perfect base to explore the town from, with more rooms than you can imagine.”
Reviewed July 3, 2017 for a stay in October 2015

Almost right in the centre of town, the cottage was a very convenient base to explore Whitby from. Kitchen was well-equipped, and there were more rooms than I could comprehend; plenty for kids or a larger group of adults. Well-decorated and felt very homely throughout our stay.

Be sure to make use of the large collection of holiday reading when you visit the beach, which is a very short walk.

Great location within Whitby, close to local amenities and easily reached from the train station. Had a lovely time exploring the local town and countryside with this place as a hub. Very reasonably priced. Would go again.

“Lovely Cottage in the centre of town”

Been visiting every year just before Christmas for the last 4 years. Great location on the west side of the crossing. More than enough space for our party of 8 with well equipped kitchen and dining area. Only a couple of minutes walk from the station, pubs and beach. Recommend Trenchers round the corner for the best fish and chips in town. Will be back next year!

“Great location, lovely cottage.”

A lovely period cottage squashed in among others near the river and the steam trains. Access is by worn steps and a narrow alley but it is spacious and well equipped. We had a good time here.

“Large house but not ideal for young children”
Reviewed September 3, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

The Anchorage was ideally situated to visit local places in Whitby, being a short walk from everything we needed. While I appreciate that we stayed there during a very busy week, parking was a nightmare and involved much juggling from space to space. The house itself was rather tired and dated and the kitchen cupboards and trays in the oven not as clean as they could have been.
We had a comfortable stay there but the downstairs rooms contained a lot of furniture which made it feel very crowded, especially with 6 adults, 2 children and a toddler. Fortunately we took our own black out blinds because the curtains were thin and did not block out the light, although I appreciate that this is not a problem for many people. The description of the house did not emphasise the potential dangers of all the stairs but again we had taken our own safety gates which really were a necessity and perhaps ought to be provided if young families visit. The house was otherwise well equipped.
I think this would be a great location for a week away with groups of friends but is not ideal for young children.
One real hazzard I would like to point out is the entrance to the downstairs toilet which is accessed via 3 stone steps- the door to this toilet does not have a lock on the outside and our two year old leaned against the door and tumbled backwards down the steps, somehow miraculously escaping serious injury.

Management Response
Oct 29, 2013
Seasoned tripadvisor users hopefully can read between the lines here. All our visitors over the last ten years have loved the house, including many repeat visitors. To respond to specific points:
The house is very conveniently situated for parking. There is plenty of unrestricted parking around the Park and all within 5 minutes walk. Shuffling from space to space is unnecessary.
The house is dated having been built in 1740 and has all the original Georgian panelling and charm. It is recently decorated and the furnishings can be seen on the web sites.
Likewise the rooms are furnished to seat 8 but there is no playground in the house.
The stairs are normal stairs with one main landing and two half landings so they are entirely safe with four short runs.
It is true that we do not supply blackout blinds.
We love the house and regard it as our home and it is presented as such. Please check out the pictures on our various web sites.
