Very old establishment, full of Character. Attentive waiter. Lovely light crispy batter on the fish which consisted of two pieces. If I am being 'picky' I would have preferred one bigger piece fish - less batter. Nice chunky chips!

Good food but limited menu. Probably better ambience than some by virtue of its low lighting. Disappointing choice of starters and fish dishes bearing in mind its location in Whitby.

First time back here since the new owners arrived. We stopped off for a drink in the new front bar area on Saturday night and liked it so much we decided to see if they could fit us in for dinner. We are glad we stayed. They found us a table in the downstairs restaurant, thoughtfully siuggesting that as were were a party of 2 we might be a bit overwhelmed by a couple of big groups in the upstairs room. The service from everybody, from the owner to the waiters, was charming and attentive. The food was a revelation - a really innovative menu that in terms of quality far exceeded anything we were expecting. Overall the atmosphere was lovely - busy and lively but never feeling noisy or oppressive. But this is Whitby, so of course there is always something unconventional going on - in our case, the diners at the next table were sharing nude photos of each other on their i-phones. Cockles anyone?

2nd time for us to the WH&G. We decided to pop out for a meal on Saturday night without booking!! Our normal favourites (in order), Ditto, Marine, Harry's, Moon and Sixpence were all full, Greens was not, but 2 out of 3 poor meals has put us off and we did not fancy thai, indian or fish and chips. Plenty of choice left but decided to call in again to the White Horse. A table was available and we settled in for what turned out to be an exceptional meal. Plenty of staff, all 'on it' and in good humour. the restaurant was 3/4's full which is always ideal, not to busy but plenty of atmosphere. The Boss is on a diet (again) and asked for specific methods of cooking! All accommodated without any fuss. The whole experience was excellent.
Still an issue with a slightly musty, damp smell but this was not worth fussing about. If standards of food and service are maintained then this place should see a smooth rise towards the top of the Whitby table.

I was recommended to come here for Sunday lunch. It was our wedding anniversary so we were hoping for more than the standard pub fare. Looking at the outside, I was slightly disappointed and my expectations were not high. I could not have been more wrong. The staff were so friendly, the restaurant had a wonderful ambience and the food was simply stunning. Beautifully cooked roast beef, almost perfect Yorkshire puddings and an interesting selection of vegetables. Definitely not the standard Sunday lunch. But the best part of all was the desserts, so make sure you leave space.

We were so impressed we went again later in the week and once again, the food was outstanding.

A definite must for any visitor to Whitby. And they serve Timothy Taylor landlord ale too!
