“Home from Home”
Reviewed July 21, 2008 for a stay in July 2008

As soon as we opened the door it felt like home and the decor was nice and simple but to a high standard .
The owners have gone along way to ensure everything is provided , because we always forget something when we go away .
The setting is lovely and you are right in the hustle and bustle of a busy fishing\ holiday and close to all the amenities .
We would recommend it to anyone who wanted a home from home stay , and we'll definitely be back next year .
We booked at short notice but the owners ensured we got our keys sent to us and even took the time to phone before we left to make sure they had got there safely .
The only small issue we had was a bit of late night noise from people taking a short cut but hey you prbably have the same in the house you live in at home ( if you live in a town or city )
It is also a family type cottage with everything catered for in case of a british summer down pour , books and dvds and even some cd music so everything has been thought of by the owners .
Once again thanks for letting us stay in your lovely home .

“Fabulous break in Whitby”
Reviewed December 10, 2007 for a stay in November 2006

This is a gorgeous house tucked away on a cobbled street, right in the heart of all the action in Whitby. Really lovely inside, very cosy and a great size – I went with just my boyfriend and there was loads of space – I should think it would be great for families.

We went on a very cold weekend in November, but despite that, loved Whitby, the house is a very short walk from Whitby Abbey and also all the pubs and eateries etc. It’s a great location and a real ‘home from home’ experience. A treat!

“Comfortable base for exploring Whitby - for heavy sleepers!”
Reviewed June 1, 2007 for a stay in June 2007

The apartment is, as others have said, well-appointed, neutrally decorated to please and securely located. Car-less as we were (Whitby parking has always been an nightmare) we found it an excellent location for sorties out into and beyond the town, which is one of England's finest for a traditional seaside holiday.

A few observations:

Grape Lane on to which the bedrooms face is both a destination in its own right (restaurants) and a popular thoroughfare for those coming to - and going home from - other eateries and pubs in Whitby. At least on Fridays and Saturdays, expect broken or no sleep until gone 1am (or later) unless you are a heavy sleeper. I suggest the owners dual-glaze the bedrooms and/or provide heavier curtains (something that would help cut down on the light that also permeates bedrooms from 5am in Summer.

We found it difficult to get the bedrooms warm, though the central heating was efficient.

There were some issues around bathroom cleanliness which the owners need to address with their cleaner.

Overall, a good experience.

“A real home from home”

Just returned from a two night stay. Absolutely wonderful!
Would agree 100% with other comments. The accommodation was warm, spotlessly clean and most comfortable. All the little touches like the provision of milk in the fridge, tea bags, coffee and sugar – even a bottle of wine, were most welcome, as were the DVDs, CDs, Books & toys, a box of tissues in each room and then there was an umbrella, beach mats and bucket n spade by the front door. Very thoughtful and something plenty of other holiday home owners would do well to take note of.
Everything you needed was right there on the doorstep and yet it was a little haven of peace.
We'd defineately return and would highly recommend to all but those who'd maybe find stairs difficult.
One small downside – although you can drive down the narrow street to drop off luggage at the door, car parking could be a bit of a problem – especially at peak season.

“Three times a winner”

We have stayed at the Whitby Retreats holiday home three times now and have been absolutely delighted every time.

Accommodation
This first and second floor apartment sits securely behind the huge wrought iron gates of the Captain Cook museum and seems to share the museum's private courtyard and access to the harbour view. Upstairs, away from it all but with the buzz of the town all around you, the retreat effect is perfect; the rooms are large, airy and characterful while being well appointed, modern in decoration and very comfortable. The attention to details like the complimentary wine, leather sofas, cream carpets, DVD etc all make this feel like a luxury break.
Activities
Whitby is less a full on activity break for us and more of an unwind and get some English seaside character. There is obviously masses of history and I'm told there is a major folk festival and a huge Goth, er, gathering but we love the the crazy golf, lunch at The Magpie Cafe, a walk along the front and cream teas at Botham's.

We have just returned from a 3-night stay at this self-catering house/apartment - it is'nt a hotel. Everything was super from the booking onwards when Emma could not have been more helpful even though we were a little vague about our dates.

The house is really lovely, very secure, spotlessly clean and very nicely appointed throughout. The view from the sitting room is especially nice. The bathrooms are great and the owners really have thought of everything to make your stay special. We were even greeted with a complimentary bottle of wine! The only thing that wasn't there was a bar of soap in the shower, but I mention this only to advise you to pop one in your bag and I wouldn't wish to detract from what was a lovely three-day break.

We ate twice at the White Horse and Griffin, two minutes walk away in Church Street, and the food, we had wonderful seafood and steaks, was absolutely delicious and the staff very helpful and attentive. There is a bit of a shortage of good restaurants. There are lots of fish and chip shops, but DON'T be tempted to go to Robinson's just around the corner from the apartment. The fish and chips were truly, unforgettably revolting! We hear that Mr Chips is excellent but didn't go there ourselves. If you want some really nice fish and chips pop along to the pub just before the little bridge ( can't recall the name) on the front at Sandsend (5 minutes drive away) where the food was lovely and restored my faith in real Yorkshire fish and chips!

What can I say ? nothing bad that's for sure. This holiday cottage (house) is just amazing - there isn't anything to improve upon - everything you could possibly want - excellent location - fantastic accomodation and facilities - a true home from home - only one downside to our visit, and that was it wasn't long enough !
Don't even hesitate to book - this place is fantastic - i'll be back for sure.
