We visited recently to see the stunning architecture. The box pews and triple height pulpit is unique. The Church is in a lovely location on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. There are 199 steps up from the town but you can take the Whitby Town Tour bus to the top, it is well worth it as Whitby Abbey is next door to this and is of outstanding beauty also.

Next time we return to Whitby we will certainly visit again.

This church has been in the news recently due to the problems with erosion and part of the churchyard crumbling away. We were told that it was originally a two acre plot. There are some amazing views over Whitby - well worth the 199 steps! Whilst climbing the steps, there are broader sections that the coffin bearers used to stop and catch their breath. The church is unusual with its three tier pulpit looking out over the sections of pews and amazing gallery. We were surprised to learn that these boxed pews were due to the class system in its Georgian past - your position in society indicated where you sat! There is a small exhibition relating back to the church's very early roots which was interesting. We were lucky enough to chat to a gentleman there who was knowledgeable and gave us lots of information. An amazing and unique church.

You have to walk up the 119 steps to reach the church that looks over Whitby bay and it is worth it. The church is very old and very beautiful both in and out. The church yard is well kept and both church and yard are full of the history of old Whitby. Helpful staff will answer your questions and items are for sale at the entrance to the church to help raise funds. If you vist you can light a candle for a loved one(s) at a cost of .30p, there is also a box for donations. Worth a vist and good exercise.

A beautiful church that is the practising church of the parish. Make an effort and take the 199 steps (you can rest along the way) you will not be disappointed. Great views of Whitby too

A great location - scarily near the crumbling edge of the cliff! The box pews and the huge pulpit. Go on Thurday evening and watch the bellringers practising - they often let you have a little go!
