“Cute cottage, but noisy.”

We stayed at Tumble Cottage in June for one Saturday night - we were doing a charity hike from Staithes to Whitby on the Sunday and didn't want to travel up too early, so decided to stay over. The owner was very friendly, met us at the cottage and saved us her parking space as the road the cottage is on is particularly busy. There was a bottle of wine waiting for us and the cottage itself is lovely, lots of attention to detail, and obviously done out with love and care, even down to the quirky shower room spotlight set in the floor. The cottage is 4 berth, but tiny and long and thin with windows on both sides, ok for a weekend, but I think I'd go stir-crazy for a week or longer - the downstairs is open plan with a kitchen/diner, a couple of steps down into the lounge with a toilet off, and 2 bedrooms and a shower room upstairs. The front bedroom is tiny, and as we were one couple and 2 singles, one of the singles had the front bedroom, and the other had a sofa bed in the lounge. The position of the cottage, while fairly central, is between a pub and a shop, and is across from a church and a bakery and is very noisy, day and night - I don't think I got a wink of sleep all night as there was a 'turn' on at the pub until the early hours and he was so loud I thought he was serenading us at the bottom of our bed (and just awful - we thought he was singing karaoke) Not a great place to stay when you've a 12 mile hike over hilly terrain to do the day after. My lack of 5 stars just represents the noise created by the cottage's position, if you're oblivious to the world when you sleep you'll be fine.
