What a lovely meal. The food was excellent along with the service. Candle on table, open log fire made this a very special evening meal for us. Will certainly recommend this restaurant to all our friends.

Stayed here last week for a couple of nights on the best deal I've ever booked from living social!
Dinner on the first night was included and exceeded all expectations.
Beautiful quirky building. It has recently changed hands and the new owner is in the middle of bringing it up to date decor wise but top marks for his efforts so far.
With the right care and attention to detail this should in time be the number 1 hotel in whitby on trip advisor.
If owner does read this please spend money on beautiful curtains to dress your rooms when you redecorate. The cream cord curtains in our room really don't go. You need heavy interlined curtains, keep warmth in and noise out. Other niggle was cheap sliced bread at breakfast and cheap bookers? Jams in plastic packaging. Cooked breakfast was lovely. Great sausage!
If your thinking of booking this place, don't hesitate, just do it.

My wife and I booked in for my birthday weekend with a living social voucher, we got the weekend we wanted and they were very accommodating with a time for our inclusive meal even though there was a gin tasting meant to be on that evening. When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and shown to our room (Provider) on the second floor. The room had bags of character and the inn itself is nearly 700 years old, our room was panelled and the old fire had been changed to an easy to use gas fire which was a lovely bonus. The bed was comfy and the room clean. The bathroom needs an overhaul but on speaking to the management this is scheduled for early next year which will make it even more lovely. Although the room didn't have a view unless you count a tiled roof it didn't matter to us and made it very quiet so we slept well.

We went down for pre-dinner drinks and enjoyed relaxing in the bar and were not rushed to go into their quaint restaurant. The food was out of this world and served all in good time, piping hot with flare and style. We expected to be restricted with the choice as we were on a voucher but no we got the most delicious melt in the mouth steaks and we paid extra for one of their carefully selected wines. When it came to dessert we were very stuffed so plumped for a couple of cheeses to share and they were flexible with what we could have.

Both mornings we were treated to an inclusive breakfast with plenty choice and again in another stunning room. We both opted for full english which was a great choice including sumptuous sausage, black pudding and runny eggs the second day I couldn't resist the same again and my wife just asked for egg on toast which they were more than happy to do instead.

The service, period character and relaxed but very efficient staff make this place very special. We'll definately be back. The only reason we gave a 4 is because there isn't a 4.5 and the bathroom let the room down.

We have stayed and eaten at the White Horse many times , the first time was shortly after the previous owner had opened up. We loved the old place and the food was excellent . Unfortunately the last couple of times we ate there the food was not good so we stopped going. We saw on the internet that new owners have acquired the Hotel and have been busy sorting some issues out and doing some refurbishing and alterations so we booked for a meal. It was excellent , The food was well cooked, the service was spot on and the old place has benefited from a few changes to the bar areas.it is good to see the old inn back on track and we will be staying for a couple of nights as soon as the opportunity arises.

Stayed one night in the 'Dickens' room. Very helpful and pleasant staff, room very clean and newly decorated, and warm and comfortable., With very large impressive bathroom. Breakfast very good with lots of options to choose from. Overall very good value and would recommend and stay there again.

Room Tip: Would recommend the 'Dickens' room, although its up a few flight of stairs.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
