“A very pleasant experience”
Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

We have enjoyed two previous visits to Raithwaite Hall taking advantage of their Xmas packages so when we had a special occasion to celebrate it was our first choice. We weren't disappointed. Although some rooms are not very big and although there is no air conditioning and although the pool area is not the largest - the quality is excellent. The Hall and gardens are beautiful. Whilst the hotel is not as opulent as other 5* hotels we've been to their main attraction for us is their excellent service. To a person, every member of the team from reception to restaurant to garden was willing to help in any way they could in an honest and engaging manner. Nothing ever seems too much trouble. The location is perfect if you like a good walk along the cliffs or in the nearby Yorkshire moors. The hotel restaurant is good but if you stay for any length of time there are other excellent restaurants nearby in Sandsend and in Whitby.

A beautiful hotel, a small but lovely room, very comfy bed, wonderful grounds, the facial in the spa was superb, the service was of a high standard, but... When 'Peter the Porter' gave his overview of the room ect he said Wifi reception was very poor but there was a booster at a specific table in the bar or under a large tree in the drive...he wasn't joking!! Very frustrating.
The breakfast was lovely but the evening meal disappointing. Afternoon tea was average.
One disconcerting occurrence, we found our room door ajar when we returned following a morning out and about.
Overall the good out weighed the less good and we would return.

Room Tip: The hotel is in a very quiet location so noisy rooms are not a problem

Booked for one night as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations.
Stayed in a deluxe room number 215 , which was clean and a reasonable size. The weather was very warm outside but no air conditioning ? The bathroom had underfloor heating which isnt much use in the summer when you spend eight hours in bed and 10 minits in the shower !
We opened the French windows onto a very small balcony to be met by a view of a grassed banking and an out door room covered with bamboo matting. The room itself contained a pump or flushing system of sorts which periodically sounded like a toilet flushing , nice !
Overall the rest of the hotel is nothing special for a 5 star and we have stayed in a lot better for less.
Peter on reception was very helpfull and informative , he even pointed out some of the short comings of the room !
The hotel is also quite isolated from whity so a taxi is Must , and no mobile phone reception which in this day and age is a must for a lot of people.

Room Tip: My tip for a good room is book some where else......

What a superb, and delightful surprise, to find this quality hide away so close the sea-side. The setting is relaxing and transports you away to a relaxing world far from the hussle and bussle.
Quality appointed bedroom and bathroom, with gowns and slippers available for your use, when you take a trip to the spa.
Only slight down side, was that the menu was not very 'local' - no Whitby crab; and at the higher end of budget. To keep guests in the hotel restaurant or bar, there needs to be something special, that you can't get locally or at least features a good range of sea food, at competitive prices.
I recommend a visit.

Room Tip: Hotel is hidden away from the main road, so all rooms are quite. Some have a little balacony overloo...

Our second stay and always a a pleasure to return. We were surprised that building work was still continuing, building further accommodation but it did not disrupt us in anyway. The pool is small so I wonder about the capacity in the long term if more people are eligible to use it. The weather was very hot and the duvets seem to be as thick as they were when we went in colder weather so lighter ones would have made us more comfortable as there is no air conditioning. I didn't sleep well on either evening. We had a lovely room with a balcony so one evening we had room service out there the food was delicious and well presented with very obliging staff, on the other evening used the restaurant. They do not serve Merlot by the glass which was a surprise.

Room Tip: We prefer a room in the hotel with a balcony and near the lift to easily use the spa facilities.

Dear Emerald130944,

Thanks for reviewing our Estate. The obliging Staff were delighted to read you felt so well looked after.

The remaining building work will now be carried out on The Estate a distance from the 2 Hotels and should not have an affect on any of our Hotel residents. Also in regards to the Heat, since your stay, portable air conditioning units have been purchased.

Hope to welcome you back for a third time in the near future.

Kindest regards,

Mark Ayre

We spent the night here as a special treat to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The description online ticked all the boxes and we got a special rate for a last minute booking.

The access/ entrance to the hotel is a bit confusing as its more of a complex with lots of buildings. You need to know which part of the hotel you are staying in (which I couldn't remember). However we found reception without too much fuss. The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. The first room we were given was 105. The room, although small, was lovely with a large bathroom with bath and walk in shower. The bedroom had patio doors which opened out onto a small private courtyard which was pleasant and well maintained. However the view we had was of a wall at least 7ft high! I requested an alternative room which the staff were happy to provide. We were moved quickly to room 208. This room was much larger, with views to the front of the hotel making it much lighter. The bathroom only had a shower over the bath but that wasn't a problem.

The swimming pool and changing areas were clean and well maintained. The pool wasn't busy which was a bonus. The only criticism was a rather loud whiney fan/extractor which one of the guest stated was waiting for repair.

We had breakfast in the new conservatory area which was light and airy with lovely views of garden. As with all the staff in the hotel the waiting staff were helpful though a clearer explanation of ordering some of the hot food would have been helpful. The food selection was good, but there were some flies landing on the cold meats!

My only major complaint was the fact that the room was very warm overnight. We requested a fan but were informed that they were all in use in another part of the hotel. Despite the fact that the bed was very comfy, it was I impossible to sleep well. While I accept that the hotel cannot have known that we would have a heat wave this year, I would have expected that over a week into it they would have resolved the issue.

There are still building works going on but this didn't affect our stay.

Overall a good experience.

Room Tip: One of the higher up rooms would be brighter

Stayed in the newest part of the hotel called The Keep (opened in May) It is a minute or two easy walk to the main hotel. The Keep has a bar and serves breakfast - not sure if lunch is available there too. The main hotel has a pleasant bar, where you can get good bar food, and a good restaurant.
The estate is a few minutes drive outside WHitby and close to the golf club. Would be walkable to the beach/Sandsend if you were feeling energetic.

Pros and cons:

Pros:
Well built quality hotel - quality fittings
Good sized rooms
Very comfortable bed
Bath and shower
Very clean
Good breakfast
Charming service
Enjoyable dinner (if you have the tasting menu do go for the wine pairings - miss a dimension otherwise)
Excellent position

Cons
No Air conditioning in the rooms. Why build a spanking new hotel and not put in air con? OK it is Yorkshire but even so! The staff helped providing a floor standing fan but it was a shame. Rooms on the ground floor with sliding patio doors so you couldn't have the windows open for security and the deck outside was a shared area.
Access to the beautiful garden was either through the restaurant (discouraged during service) or via a bedroom corridor and fire door - big design mistake
Lots of continuing work on the estate - not too intrusive as it seems well managed but it is there - seems like this place is growing like Topsy

To sum up - we really liked this hotel and did enjoy the stay but would definitely think twice about a summer stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor are, apparantly, even hotter!
