The hotel is situated at the end of a road in a wooden valley, just moments from the sea.
We received a friendly and warm welcome on arrival from Peter on reception who quickly completed the booking-in procedure, and then escorted us to our room (303) which was situated on the top floor. There he expalined the facilities of the room and hotel, and even gave us a history of the building and estate. The room was comfortable and well appointed, as was the bathroom. There was a complimentary refreshment tray with biscuits and bottled ater which was replenished daily. Plenty of choice at breakfast, which was served buffet style and as such was not particularly hot. The restaurant staff, like the rest of the hotel, were very helpful and friendly. In particular a male waiter (sorry I did not get his name, but had a foreign accent) stopped what he was doing to show us how to get to garden through the hotel. The garden was beautifully laid out with a stream running through the valley, with flowering plants either side. The rear of the garden lead to a colourful rhododendron surrounded lake, woodland walks to Whitby, Sandsend, and Newholm., and a field containing a small herd of Alpacas. One minor disadvantage was the fact that the television only had a limited number of Freeview channels, but instead had a pay to view film channel. Overall an excellent hotel, and one we shall return to when next in the area.

Tip: For those driving into Whitby there is plenty of free parking on West Cliff around North Terrace.

I decided to book a three night stay for my partner and myself at Raithwaite Hall as we were long overdue a break and as it is no. 1 on trip advisor for Whitby hotels, we expected the best.
The hotel is in beautiful surroundings and felt like a haven. The spa was so relaxing (especially during the child-free hours) and the staff were extremely courteous. We were barely aware of the building works that seem to have inconvenienced other reviewers.

We enjoyed a cooked breakfast every day and each time it was cooked to perfection, however it was a good job I double checked a few days before arrival whether or not it was included in the price of my original booking - it turned out it wasn't and had I paid on the day it would have cost a staggering £20 per head as opposed to the £10 per head I paid in advance. On the first night I ordered a "large" glass of house red wine from the bar, at a cost of £5.40. It was in fact a 175ml glass of wine - the largest available, but in most places a large glass is 250ml and costs far less. The following night we bought a lovely bottle of red wine from the off license for £5 and drank it in our room!

The hotel was 2 miles from Whitby, but we chose to drive into Whitby every night to dine as the prices in the Brace restaurant were quite frankly extortionate. We dined at some wonderful restaurants including Ditto, ranked no. 1 Whitby restaurant for far less. My final niggle regards the beds - my partner and myself are used to a king sized bed with a memory foam mattress at home and given that this was a luxury hotel, we expected that all of the rooms should have king sized beds as standard. Unfortunately, the bed was a double and the sprung mattress meant that every time either one of us moved in our sleep, the entire mattress moved, waking the other one up! On the final night it took us three hours to get to sleep because of this! The room itself was small, but adequate and was cleaned to a high standard every day. I would have liked a few and a few more hangers in the wardrobe, but the bathroom, especially the huge bath was excellent (in fact, I think the bathroom may well have been larger than the bedroom!)

We had a booking at THE KEEP, the new separate part of the estate but it was not ready for occupation so we were given rooms in the main hotel. Much better idea. We really enjoyed our trip and the service was excellent. We dined in the hotel on the first night and the food was great. Breakfast was also very good.We think it's a great location and will use it forever.
Many thanks to the friendly staff, always a bonus for us.
Only bug with my two elderly friends was a problem with the bathroom bath and showers which were quite slippy and had no handrails or anti-slip mats.

Room Tip: I would ask for a garden view room

This is a hotel with additional properties on site which it seems is set to expand still further judging by the building works taking place.
We stayed in the main hotel block in an executive room on the 1st floor. The room was shall we say of modest proportions albeit tastefully furnished and with a lovely balcony overlooking the beautifully manicured gardens. With the sunny weather this really was a treat.
The bathroom was in fact a shower room, tastefully tiled and with high quality fittings. The frustrations were that there was no shaver point so I couldn't charge either my toothbrush or electric razor & no cotton wool balls, buds etc were provided. Minor frustrations in the scheme of things but surprising for such an establishment aiming at the quality end of the market.
The TV carries Freeview channels but the hotel wifi did not make it as far as the room - again a frustration that would be so easy to solve. As a business traveller that would put me off but as a leisure traveller it might be seen as an advantage.
The spa area is very nice and I had a lovely massage, all the usual treatments are available at prices which are in keeping.
The breakfast is excellent - a really wide range of options and all of the highest quality. The egg chef isn't the most cheerful or engaging but he cooks a mean omelette.

The rest of the staff we encountered were charming and efficient especially Peter - what a particularly engaging chap he is - they should look after him he is an asset.
The gardens are beautiful and look out for the alpacas - seriously, alpacas !!

The estate is being developed and so there are ancillary building noises about the place which can affect the ambience but once it is finished it will be really tranquil.

So, why not 5 stars ? Well it's on the way but it's not finished (literally in places) and for the prices the rooms just lack some modest finishing touches and the wifi is for me a huge frustration (albeit some will appreciate the isolation).

I would like to return but perhaps in a year or so when it has bedded down.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a balcony overlooking the gardens

Stayed in "The Keep", an annex to the main building which had opened just the week before, Looks a bit odd with modern stone and faux crenelations. Spectacular setting though next to a ravine with ancient woods. Lovely stylish hotel. Pleasant airy reception with a small bar and breakfast area. Room modern and well appointed with comfortable bed. Outside balcony with decking and one expects outside chairs at some point. Beautiful bathroom. Staff very friendly and helpful. The only disappointment was the breakfast with the cooked breakfast items obviously been microwaved rather than cooked-that awful pale uniformly pink sausage and soggy bacon. A shame really as it quite literally left a bad taste in the mouth after an otherwise pleasant stay. In their defence the staff said the cook had been called to the main hotel to help out. Hopefully just a teething blip-we shall try it again.
