“Family holiday in the Barn”

Excellent accommodation and a lovely place for a holiday. My dad is in a wheelchair and accessibility was top rate. Sandy and Sue Muir were lovely people. A little piece of 'the good life'. Have booked again already, also incredibly good value for money!!

We stayed in the top pigsty for 2 nights! It is a great base for a trip to Whitby or for long walks!
The website only allows you to book for 7 nights but we phoned and were able to get a 2 night stay the same day. The pigsty is small and cosy and has everything you need.

It has a fridge, hobs and microwave but no oven so bear that in mind. It is very remote and quiet.

There isn't any phone signal at the pigsty or for 3 miles around so if you want to switch off from the outside world this is the place to go.

In all a great place to stay.

We have just come home after having a great weeks holiday in the Top Pigsty. It had everything we needed and the views were fantastic. Sue and Sandy are doing a brilliant job and we hope to go back again soon. M & K Swaine

Went here for the second time, as our first experience was so good and we were not disappointed. Last time we stayed in Top Pigsty and this time we were due to be in Bottom Pigsty but Sue had to upgrade us to the Cow Byre, which was lovely. The place was spotless and warm (it was a rather wet week altogether) and the accommodation was great for a wheelchair but without being "in your face".

Another reviewer was unhappy with the booking system; the online system is actually fine and is kept at a server off site, so if it syas you are booked, then you ARE booked. The reason there was a problem when the person rang is that Sue & Sandy only have a rather flaky internet connection and so it sometimes takes time for them to check what is already booked on the server (this is not their fault - it is because of National park restrictions on the types of connections available to them, hence it takes time for them to connect and it frequently "drops" in mid enquiry to the outside server).

If you are looking for somewhere peaceful with NO internet signal in the cottages, NO mobile signal within about 3 miles and is wheelchair friendly, then this is the place for you. And if you are a townie, you must not be afraid of hens or of cockerels crowing at silly o'clock in the morning - you are in THEIR territory, so adapt to them, not the other way round.

We were looking for somewhere, to take my disabled Mother-in-law, and also three dogs. Right from the first phonecall, to Sue, we knew this was going to be special, and it was. There were five adults, and three dogs. My Mother, disabled Mother-in-law and her carer stayed in the Cow Byre, whilst the wife and I stayed in the Pigsty. We had a great time, even able to park the minibus in the barn, to allow loading in the dry.
Sue and Sandy were on hand to answer any questions, and nothing was too much trouble for them. Everywhere was spotlessly clean, and the TV reception was good. I ventured down to the Cleveland Inn, 300 yards away, and was made very welcome.
We will definately return, and make use of Commondale Railway Station, 200 yards away, to take a trip to Whitby, on the picturesque Esk Valley Line.
The downsides.............there aren't any. Good scenery, excellent accomodation, good hosts, and the chickens make good company, when you venture out.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Trust your Sat-Nav, as it will take you right to Commondale. Best to find it in daylight, as it is v...

I made an enquiry online and was advised that a cottage was available for the dates specified.

I phoned to confirm and was again informed the dates were available. I was asked to phone back in 20 minutes as there was a problem with their PC.

I did - but then the story changed - they might or they might not have availability. The person was very unsure. A very chaotic booking system.

It's a shame as I travel to the area with my family several times a year & it couldhave been a regular option. Luckily I was able to secure an alternative accommodation.
