“lovely once again”
Reviewed April 21, 2012

just decide at the last minute to have a little break managed to get the last room available on a wet tuesday night. we were shown up to the attic room which was really very nice . nice comfy bed etc.
we love the fact that you dont have to vacate your room until 11am and then you can still get your breakfast up till 12.00 . unlike most of the guest houses where you have to be up at some ridiculous hour before they throw you out.( we are supposed to be on a relaxing break you know)
we love to sit in the window and watch the comings and goings whilst sipping on a great cocktail.my favourite is a grapefruit crush but as it wasn,t on the menu this time I had a butterscotch martini it was sublime. also recommend the moon and sixpence gin and tonic(hubbies favourite) choice for breakfast is good and very nicely done.can,t wait to return.

This is the second time we have stayed with the Moon and Sixpence B& B so I'd certainly recommend it.
The rooms are designed with interesting, and fashionable furnishings - making the stay feel less like 'just being at home'. There's a DVD player and kettle.
The on-suite bathroom is very clean and well presented - though watch the drainage on the shower (we needed to flush it through a bit - not a problem). We didn't bother with the bubble bath in the bedroom!
Our room did offer a very very small view of the harbor and lifeboat launch, I am not sure if other rooms are better appointed - but this is typical of the tight arrangement of the historic buildings on Whitby's harbor-side. Plus we had our fill of the sea view from outside!
(You cannot park outside but free on-street parking (in the Winter) is up the hill).
Breakfast is down in the bar - so you need to go outside - but compensated by the fresh juice, good coffee and yummy scrambled egg and bacon. And lashings of toast and marmalade.
The two night stay was competitively priced.
My only constructive but slightly negative comment to the owners is to watch that 'shabby chic' doesn't just become 'shabby. I think this quality of decor is high maintenance - but worth it. Also the mucky pigeons on the window ledges are bit yucky.
Lots of places to eat in the area - we found the Magpie hard to beat.

Room Tip: There is a steep flight of stairs to the room - a historic building.

We have stayed here once and eaten on numerous occasions. Room was beautifully furnished. Staff attentive and the general atmosphere layed back and helpful. The decor of the bar/restaurant is trendy but have never felt out of place. And it is a testament to how good it is that it always seems busy.

Food is always good, my only gripe would be that I think the deserts are packet ones, however, as we had a 3 course meal for a set price of £13, not one to be sniffy about. Drinks are reasonable prices and they have a good range of cocktails.

Location is great as well, right on the harbour front.

For the room, one thing to be aware of is the frosted glass in the on suite. A blind would be good as we ended up announcing when going to loo. This is the same as the sister hotel the Marine which we stayed in August last year. Which also was fab.

Not that it bothered us but couple of flights of stairs to the rooms, I am sure web site covers this,

What a refreshing change to finally find that the English Seaside has come into the 21st Century and with a bit of style too. Stayed in Room 6 and simply Cant fault the room none of the problems that the previous reviewer had even though we were in the same room only days later....(I dont have your mirror either though so perhaps you didnt leave it thereafter all?) A tip though as with all Jacuzzi baths, dont turn on the jets until they are completely under water or of course they will fire jets of water into the room..... Cant fault anything, little touches like mineral water in the room was a definate plus, may have been nice to have had a small fridge, but then im being picky....Staff were wonderfully accomodating and we never wanted for anything, we did frequent both the bar and ate in the evening in the wonderful restaurant (see other review) and could not fault any of it........I have eaten all over the world and the Rib Eye was up ther with the best as was the seafood, with copious and very varied cocktails on offer it was a wonderful experience, . The breakfast was also quite superb, Smoked salmon, scambled eggs and muffins for me with excellent illy Coffees, as a Coffee snob this was most appreciated. Husband had full English and espresso and he too had more than enough with no complaints, breakfast was included in room price which considering this was great value, was a touch pricey if standalone as were cocktails, but then again you get what you pay for and at the Moon & Sixpence you certainly got a great atmosphere, a great choice of drinks in a very well stocked bar and great location right on the harbour. Very very pleasant bar staff and owners....Can't recommend highly enough so will just say it all by adding ....We will be back

Room Tip: Room 6, excellent & spacious but no lift and 2 floors up so not for the less mobile.

We stayed for one night in room 6 in mid Feb and on first glance the room appeared luxurious and the 'in room' spa bath very inviting. However, there were some little faults which tarnished our visit, including the shower not reaching anywhere near warm and flooding the whole floor as the plug wouldn't drain and there was a light bulb out in the bathroom which was dimly lit anyway. The spa bath was a little temperamental firing jets of water accross the room, but at least it was hot! On the positive side the room was toasty warm and the bed exceptionally comfortable.
We chose to have dinner at The Marine restaurant (sister hotel) which was superb and would highly recommend booking here. The breakfast was also plentiful and tasty at the Moon and sixpence.
The true test of receiving good service is when something goes wrong or you require something a little beyond the norm. I simply left a small inexpensive vanity mirror in the room and contacted them when I returned home the same afternoon. The hotel stated that they would send someone to check and get back to me. Two days later after still no contact from them I decided to call and enquire again after my property. The man said that the cleaner had not found my mirror and that was the end of the matter. I told them precisely where I had left it as it was slightly inconspicuous and could they please re-check the room. The man initially refused saying that they had checked and it wasn't there so when i challenged this he agreed but said that they had other guests in the room and they couldn't check until they had vacated! I am very glad that it wasn't a valuable piece of jewelry or a sentimental possession as they certainly had absolutely NO care or regard for my property! This is simply a matter of principal and I presume the guests are still in the room (mmmm) as to date I have still had no contact from them...truly very poor service.

We just spent 2 nights in room 6 and could not fault it,the room was clean, spacious and with the excellent jacuzzi made it even more superb. We had a meal in the restaurant and it was fantastic, the food ,staff and the atmosphere making it great night.Going down for breakfast the staff are great, they look after you and make sure you have all you need.
Whitby's got some great little shops and bars for the night.
If your going to whitby stay at the moon and sixpence, you will love it...

Room Tip: room 6 is the best
