“Beware four poster bed”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

My wife and I have just returned from a 3 night break at this hotel, We say beware the four poster bed as it is built into a wooden surround which you have to climb over to get in and out of bed, and not being as young as we used to be found this virtually impossible.
The hotel has not changed in years as can be seen in places, someone described it to us as a good cheap hotel.
We only had entertainment on two nights within the hotel, Sunday night was left free, but the bar was still available.
A sea view is a must though, looking out over the harbour and up to the church and abbey.

Room Tip: a sea view and abbey

Thank you for taking the time to share your review. I’m sorry to see you struggled with the bed, perhaps if you choose to stay again you would consider one of our superior rooms instead of our premier – very similar design rooms but with standard beds. To say the hotel has not changed in years is perhaps a little unfair, this year alone we have fully refurbished our ballroom and a number of bedrooms. We are very lucky to enjoy the fantastic views that make our sea view rooms a very popular choice.
We hope you would chose to stay with us again in the not too distant future.

The hotel is dated and apparently the lounge / bar area is that same as 25 years ago.

The food goes from poor to quite good ( seems to depend on how many clients are staying !! )
The bedrooms are a disgrace - ( room 239 single) The mattress was like sleeping on a bag of potatoes slightly relieved by putting spare blanket underneath the bottom sheet -- but not good.
No toiletries unless you ask for them.
The sash windows had duct tape to stop the draft/ gale coming through. Cracked window pane was sellotaped & there was damp on the ceiling and peeling wallpaper.

Overall not value for money , with diabolical accommodation ++ side waiters very good, front of house staff variable -- with one supervisor being more interested in her account figures than serving the customer

Room Tip: Try and get a draft free, clean one with good mattress or just do not go. Really destined for &quo...

I’m sorry to see you were disappointed with certain aspects of your stay. The Royal is indeed an old building with some areas still in need of refurbishment/updating, however this is very much an ongoing project with both our ballroom and a number of rooms having been done this year. I’m pleased to see you were happy with the service received in the restaurant although the standard of food should not vary depending on the number of guests.
Again I am sorry you were disappointed and hope you would consider staying in another Bay hotel in the future.

Stayed here on the 13th February this year. Excellent refurbished room. Front of house staff very polite and knowladgable.
Dining room staff very efficient. Food hot and pleanty of it.
Wide selection of drinks at the bar with good bar stwho remember your drinks from the off.
The newley refurbished Ballroom is very impressive. Brand new Furniture, PA System and Top class lighting installed. Great entertainment.
Can't fault this hotel. With it's on-going refurbishment it will certainly be the pick of the bunch very soon.

Room Tip: Although all rooms are being refurbished, obviously this takes time, so ask for one of the refurbish...

Thank you for your 5 star review. It is cleat to see you enjoyed your stay and that we ticked all the boxes from your room through to the evening entertainment. We are looking to refurbish more rooms later in the year and the ballroom is a massive improvement.
We hope to welcome you back to the Royal soon, hopefully for longer.

We chose the Royal Hotel in Whitby as we wanted a short holiday with Bed, Breakfast and Evening Meal as well as entertainment each night. We also wanted an allocated car parking space so that we could go out for the day and have no worries about parking on our return.

The meals were all excellent with the evening meal having a choice of three starters, three main courses and three sweets or cheese and biscuits.

Breakfast also had a good choice of options.

Our bedroom was large and roomy with an excellent view over the harbour and the sea.

The roomy bathroom had a bath and separate power shower. Plenty of hot water was available.

The entertainment was of a high quality and we enjoyed this every night.

All of the staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful and responded to any request without delay.

We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Go for sea view, it is worth it

Reviewed May 28, 2013

We recently stayed at the Royal Hotel Whitby with a Monday to Friday Shearing’s tour. Our room on the first floor, was very pleasant with a lovely view of the sea through the almost floor to ceiling height windows. Both the room and bathroom were very clean and well equipped although obviously not recently refurbished – the beds and bedding in particular being rather in need of updating. Service in the restaurant was excellent – our waiter Gabor was very friendly and helpful (and had a great sense of humour too). Food was very good, always hot and plenty to choose from. Reception staff were also very approachable and helpful. Entertainment was good – dancing, bingo & a quiz with visiting cabaret on 3 nights. The ballroom/entertainment room has been re-decorated and, although I personally don’t think grey would have been my first choice of paint colour, now looks much improved and the new chairs are very nice. I found the ‘virtual’ bingo caller a little off-putting but that’s just my personal opinion. One of the visiting acts was Steve – a musician/comic – who was an excellent host plus cabaret act for one evening. We also enjoyed the ‘Yorkshire Comic’ Joey on our last night in the Hotel.
The hotel is situated on the cliff top and has superb views over the town, the Abbey and the harbour. Both Local and sightseeing buses stop right outside the Hotel. Whitby is a lovely town to visit with lots to see and do.
On our last night there was quite a storm with high winds and, due to the large windows and the high ceilings in our room, the room was rather cold that night. However, this and also the rather small lift, is something that is simply due to the age of the building. The Hotel building is quite historic and really rather lovely although showing some signs of wear and tear. The games room for example has pillars and evokes thoughts of days gone by.
All in all, I would say this holiday was very good value for money – we enjoyed trips out to Helmsley, Pickering, Thornton-le-Dale & Scarborough as well as Whitby itself – and I can recommend the Hotel.
We have visited The Royal before and will definitely be visiting again.

Thank you for sharing your review. It’s always great to see guests who stay with us time and again continuing to enjoy their break. Refurbishment as you mention is an on-going project with a number of bedrooms and the ballroom being completed so far this year with more planned for later. I’ll be sure to pass your lovely comments on to the team especially Gabor, Steve and Joey they’ll be delighted. I’m pleased to see you found your break to be good value and hope to welcome you back soon.
