“Whitby Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2013

My husband and I have just returned from a 5 day break to Whitby with Shearings Holidays, to the Royal Hotel, Whitby, and what a lovely time we had. Contrary to the reviews I read on Tripadvisor prior to departure, we couldn't fault either the hotel, or Shearings. Don't listen to the negative reviews for this hotel. The staff couldn't do enough for us, the room was brilliant (we did pay a little extra for a sea view), but I didn't hear any complaints from other guests regarding their rooms. The food was good and the entertainment was exceptional. We only paid £99 per person for 5 days, and included in this were two excursions. Unbelieveable value for money!
We would most definitely recommend this hotel to other people, it was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview, they seem to be larger and are well worth the money. They don't cost that mu...

What a delight to receive your review, thank you for taking the time. I’m pleased to see you enjoyed your short break with us. Whilst we are committed to the upkeep and refurbishment of the building, I agree it is important to keep many of the characteristics expected of a building of its age.
We hope to welcome you back sometime soon.

My wife and I have just returned from a four day "Party Break" at this hotel, travelling with Shearings.
We have been to other Bay hotels with Shearings, all good, but this one is the best so far......Few squeeky floorboards for starters!!!

After a dodgy start (The coach broke down half way to Whitby, but was very quickly replaced.) we arrived at The Royal. This hotel is in a prime corner spot looking out to sea on one side and the harbour and town on the other.
Because of some perpetual moaners on here, we take very little notice of reviews, preferring to form our own opinion....Here it is:-

This hotel is excellent, roomy, clean and the food was the best we've had on our Shearings trips. Here we must mention two restaurant staff...The lady manager, who ghosts around with quiet efficiency, also our table waiter Ben from Hungary, The staff were all excellent, but these two stood out. Take note Royal Hotel, treat these two well, they are a credit to you........
The reception staff were also excellent and very helpful, as was our room maid.
We found the facilities very good, from full size snooker and pool tables to the quaint swing doors at the hotel entrance!
As we wrote earlier, the food was excellent, the usual Shearings fair, adequate portions, but somehow better presented and tastier....AND with no rush, which made a pleasant change compared with most Shearings Bay Hotels!!
The entertainment was good, particularily the male singer from the Philippines (we were told he is around 45 yrs. old, but looks half that!)...and what a powerful voice! We were in town on the last night, so missed the singer.......
The town of Whitby is a joy. A wonderful harbour, full of charm and a great, easy going atmosphere and little back alleys full of curios...and more fish and chip shops than we thought could exist in one place! Everyone of them selling top notch stuff. We went on a £3 each boat trip, had lunch time fish and chips two days running...Oink,oink!, and of course went up and down the 199 steps to the Church and famous Abbey.(Twice!) We were so taken by the town, we didn't go on the free excursion, preferring to spend the day exploring this terrific port.

The down sides? Yes, the hotel has some chipped paint...Find us one that hasn't! Anyone can find fault, some make it their goal to do so, then post daft remarks on here. The barman in the entertainment bar seemed to think he could run the bar on his own and a long queue formed (On voucher night) I went to the lounge bar and told the barman about the queue and a young lady was sent to help out..
For folks with mobility problems, access to the harbour and shops is very steep, except for one little street and that is still a bit of a drag, but once down on the quayside, where the 'action is', everything is easy going. There are plenty of taxis for the short trip down to the harbour, there is also a steam driven tour bus running around the town which passes the hotel about every 20mins or so.

Yes, all the staff were excellent and worked well together, even Mr. My bar'! We told the lady behind the hotel desk "We will be back".....and to this place we deffinately will!

Finally, a few words about our driver Dianne...What a star! The coach was wonky at the interchange and was looked at half hearted by a 'mechanic', totally disinterested he mumbled it's o'k' and waddled off to presumably finish his brew!! The coach's brakes siezed half way to Whitby, our lady driver was superb, she calmly phoned the depot and within around 30 mins a replacement coach was sent and off we went........
Mr. Shearings you have a little gem in our Dianne, look after her........

Room Tip: High room overlooking the harbour and Abbey.

Wow, what can I say. Thank you for your detailed and very complimentary review. I’m pleased to see we clearly ticked all the boxes during your short break with us regarding service, accommodation and food. It’s clear from your review that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay and didn’t encounter any problems whilst you were here. It’s great to see that in many ways we exceeded your expectations. I’m very lucky to have a great team here at the Royal many of whom you’ve mentioned by name on here, it’s always nice to see their efforts noticed and I will pass your comments onto all. Whitby is indeed a fantastic location for a break and as you say we are in a fantastic location and enjoy some stunning views. Unfortunately Diane is not one of our regular drivers, but when we see her next I’ll be sure to let her see your review.
We really look forward to welcoming you back to the Royal in the not too distant future.

Just had four days with friends and had a fab time our room was all new new beds and deco was lovely, our friends room was nice but not newly done yet, we had duvets but they still had blankets which if there room had been done would off made it better but we still had great time , the food was really nice and the staff were so nice our waiter was called Ben and he was lovely and very friendly, we travel with national holidays and our bus driver was very nice also so we had a great time and could not complain about the hotel at all, if I had to say anything it would be that the drinks were a bit expensive but that is all, also the rooms were nice and warm.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. It’s great to see you and your friends enjoyed your stay with us. From your comments I assume you were in one of our very newly refurbished rooms that were completed mid December and I must agree these are lovely rooms.. This is an ongoing project with a further number to be done in the Spring. I’m glad to see you enjoyed your meals and Ben will be delighted to see your comments as will all the others.
We hope to welcome you back in the not too distant future.

This hotel has been a stunner in the past but it is sadly in need of some work. We booked via laterooms and paid £55 B&B. The welcome was friendly and we were given a sea view room. The room itself was clean and tidy the bathroom was clean but the bath panel had been smashed and it had a 'grotty' appearance.
The floors creak terribly, a common occurance in old buildings but annoying nonetheless. The corridors are not well maintained and there are loose plug sockets and ripped wallpaper.
Breakfast - the staff were wonderful and the female Restaurant Manager was very professional, steaming and polishing the cutlery before laying the tables. BUT sadly everything went downhill, there is no use having a beautiful dining room, an attractive menu and great staff when you offer cheap awful food. We had the vegetarian breakfast which was dreadful, it looked like it had been thrown on the plate and consisted of 2 stodgy , tasteless veggie sausage an egg and a spoonful of foul tasting beans. Thankfully they use breakfast plates here so you dont get much. The bread is cheap and not pleasant. But on the up side they could offer me herbal tea and did so served very nicely in a pot with separate hot water.
Please please Shearings/Hotel manager realise what you have here and give your staff something to be proud of by serving quality not rubbish. The local B&B 's can do it so why not you?
For my part I would return as I love the older hotels that have some atmostphere but until the quality improves I would not pay for the breakfast.

Room Tip: ask for a refurbed room or ask to look at one when you check in

I appreciate you taking the time to leave your review. I’m pleased to see you received a warm welcome and on the whole found your accommodation to be of a good standard. The Royal is indeed an old building with many of the characteristics of its age e.g some creaking floor boards, but every effort is made to keep the building to a high standard with refurbishments/upgrading taking place all the time. I’ll be sure to pass your comments regarding the team on and as you say Marion is extremely professional. I’m sorry however to read your comments about the breakfast. We use quality produce to offer a tasty, satisfying breakfast and I’m sorry to see this was not the case in your experience.
We hope you will consider staying at the Royal again the next time you are in the area.

This was our first experience of a Shearings Holiday. We love Whitby and the hotel is in such a wonderful position.
On entering Reception the welcome was warm and friendly, Although the magnificent building was in need of some TLC, the food, the entertainment, the staff certainly made the whole weekend a most enjoyable experience.
In the dining room the Festive menu was interesting and well presented, when there was a problem it was soon dealt with.Marion and her team excelled,
The only issue we had was with the seating in the Ballroom on New Years Eve, considering the average age of the clients, the seating plan needed refining. The hotel was full yet maximum seating was not in place, hence when extra furniture was introduced, it blocked and created problems. Might have been easier to remove excess.
The atmosphere and service were First Class. Thank you

I'm pleased to see you enjoyed your first experience of a Shearings hotel and our festive offering. I will be sure to pass all your comments onto all the staff who all work incredibly hard to provide a first class service. Our menus are planned to offer something for everyone which I'm glad to see was the case. I understand your comments with regard to the seating in the ballroom. New Years Eve is the only night of the year when our full capacity of guests are in the one area. Whilst it may have appeared a little tight, a lot of time was spent during the day trying to work out the best seating plan possible whilst ensuring clear walkways around the room and not to block any exits.
Once again, I'm pleased you enjoyed your New Year celebrations and hope to welcome you back in the near future.
All the best for 2013.
