The Hotels location was without doubt outstanding, with a real sea view. The staff were polite and very helpfull. The twin room that my daughter and I had was spacious and and clean. However, the place is in a desperate need for decoration. The communinal areas were good although the seating in the bar area was threadbare. The hallways were covered in scuff marks, the room had bare patches on the ceiling and the walls. If everything was updated and decorated the price would not of been so bad to bare. Such a shame

Thank you for taking the time to share your views. The hotel itself couldn’t be in a better spot with the stunning views. We have a fantastic team here at the Royal. I’m pleased you found the hotel comfortable and clean as we try very hard to maintain standards. I appreciate the points you raised regarding some on the public areas and this is a continual project.
We hope you would choose to stay with us again.

Part of the Shearings group this hotel needs a lot of money spent on it, but the rooms are good size, beds are comfortable. The food is adverage and hot, for breakfast the choice is large with a smaller choice for dinner. The staff are what makes this hotel, from the chambermaids, to the restaurant manageress who can't do enough for her customers and her excellant staff. 8 days coach tour staying at the Royal for £299, if I'd paid full price £549 I would have been upset.

Room Tip: Sea rooms and up grade will make a diffrence

Many thanks for taking the time to post you views. I’m pleased to see you were comfortable during your stay. The menus are planned to offer something for everyone with a choice of 4 or 5 options at every meal. I couldn’t agree more with your comments regarding the staff, I have a great team here with Marion running a very tight ship in the restaurant.
We hope to welcome you back to the Royal in the near future.

Stayed here Friday 1st July for 3 nights. Room was dated not clean; lots of dust and cobwebs. The room was very small and the decor was very shabby and needs updating.

We paid for Dinner B&B the food was appalling, we only eat in the hotel on the first day, the food was that awful we could not face the food for a second time. Drinks very over priced.

I feel we paid alot of money for this hotel and got very little from it. The hole place needs refurbishing, there is a smell around the hotel which they try to cover up with a very strong disinfectant. The cleaning in the hotel is very poor.

Would never go to this hotel again.

I’m disappointed to read your review of your stay. Whilst I appreciate that some of the rooms are due for refurbishment our Housekeeping team work very hard to ensure high standards of cleanliness throughout. I’m sorry to see this wasn’t the case in your experience and have raised these issues with the housekeeper for actioning. Our menu’s are planned to offer something for everyone, despite varying tastes amongst our guests.
As a company we strive to offer good value for money on our breaks and I’m sorry you didn’t feel this was the case.
I would have liked the opportunity to discuss your disappointment during your stay to try and rectify the problems you encountered.

We visit Whitby on numerous occasions and I have always wanted to stay at the Royal, so when our anniversary was looming I booked a double with upgraded sea view.
Unfortuately my husband was unable to go due to work committments so my daughter came with me instead.
When we arrived everything was great but upon getting to our room I was disappointed by how the room looked. It was clean and tidy but looked very dated and drab, however the view made up for this - spectacular! ( overlooking St Mary's, Whitby Abbey and the harbour entrance , Cook's statue and whalebone arch, fab!)
The bed was also very comfortable but mealtimes we found that it seemed a bit regimented and although there were vegetarian options the overall menu seemed a bit limited although everything was reasonably good. Our waiter, Michol, ( hope I spelled his name correctly!)was
excellent and very helpful at all times.
in summary, with a bit of updating this could be a fabulous hotel but it needs to raise the quality of finish in the standard rooms so that even though they cost less you still feel there is a touch of class here!

Room Tip: Go for level 2 or 3 for the view and opt for a premier or superior - costs more but probably worth i...

Many thanks for taking the time to post your comments. I completely agree more about the views from some of our front rooms, they really are stunning. I’m pleased to see you found your room to be clean and comfortable. I appreciate that there are still some rooms that need upgrading and this is an ongoing project.
The layout and service style in the restaurant allows us to offer an open sitting therefore not restricting our guests to a set time as such. Our menus are planned to offer something for everyone with a choice of 3 starters, 5 mains and 4 dessetrs. Michal is indeed an excellent waiter and I will be sure to pass your comments on to him.
We hope you choose to stay with us on your next visit to Whitby.

Check in was quick and easy, the hotel has a reserved car park and an overflow next to that. The one lift is tiny and will accomodate only two people with luggage. Our room was very basic and overlooked the carpark, given that we had booked this break months in advance it looked as though we had been allocated a last minute room. I thought of complaining but as we had unpacked we decided to leave it. That was a mistake as we discovered later the room (114) was above the ballroom and we could clearly hear the music and singing thankfully it did not continue late into the night. There are not many options to drown out the music with the television, there were only 4 channels on this tiny set and none had a quality picture. We did sleep well although the matress had seen better days. Then came the dawn chorus, not in the form of birdsong or even gulls squawking, no it was the plumbing in room 115 humming, rattling and banging then came a noise like a rescue helicopter...it was the extractor fan next door. Overall the room was overpriced and in dire need of a facelift, not to mention some sound proofing.
During our stay we heard people complaining about the quality and quantity of the food now while it certainly shouldn't challenge the Chef to produce the menu that was available, what there was was tasty and the hot dishes although precooked had been kept warm without spoiling the food. Salads were very fresh and offered a good choice. Our waiter Rajmund looked after us in a very friendly, curteous and professional way. The bar and quiet areas of the hotel are comfortable and clean and Darren the resident entertainer works hard with his daily quizzes and singing. The ballroom is the best we have so far seen in a Shearings hotel with a large dance floor suitable for ballroom/sequence dancing. We thoroughly enjoyed the comedian Joey Howard although his sketches may not appeal to everyone.
To sum up, Shearings is a budget operator but with prices approaching those of other providers, for very little extra we could have had a four night break with Warners, they clearly need to do better. An improvement would be flatscreen freeview TVs and free WiFi as standard.
Oh and the views, yes they are stunning and even better from outside the building, you do not need to pay to see them. We would stay here again because we love Whitby but it will not be in room 114.

Room Tip: Avoid room 114, refuse it if you are offered it.

I appreciate you taking the time to leave your comments. I am pleased you found the check in smooth and easy. I agree that the lift is quite small but it is in keeping with the age and style of the building. Unfortunately all of our standard rooms do face the rear of the hotel. We would have been happy to look into a room change depending on availability had you brought your disappointment to our attention. Room 114 is indeed above the ballroom although it rarely causes problems. Our entertainment team do lower the volume from 11pm onwards and music is generally off in there by midnight. The television situation is being rectified at present in preparation for the Whitby digital switchover next month. I am pleased to see you enjoyed your dining experience and Rajmuund is certainly a valued member of the team.
Our entertainment team work very hard with Darren and Joey regularly getting good reviews.
I am pleased to see you would stay with us again and suggest at the time of booking you request a quiet room which we would allocate away from the ballroom. We look forward to welcoming you on your next visit.

This was our second visit to The Royal, last time we booked a basic room and got what we paid ,a small room overlooking the car park. This time we upgraded to a superior room, it was spacious, nicely decorated with flat screen TV and the bathroom had been recently refurbished , we also had fantastic views across to the abbey. The rest of the hotel could do with a facelift it all looks a little bit jaded. The lift just in so holds two adults with 2 suitcases and was very claustrophobic this was made worse because it had carpet on three sides. The meals are adequate but could be improved by using more fresh food, croquette potatoes, hash browns and bought in brandy snap baskets are not what we are used to eating, so we found most meals a little less than we had hoped for.We would stay here again but would book a superior room for B & B rather than H B.there are many good and reasonable restaurants in Whitby for an evening meal.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior room, the views and the extra comfort are well worth the extra money.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Our superior rooms are lovely and are proving to be very popular. Refurbishment in a building of this size is very much an on-going project and continual progress is being made. Our menus are planned to offer good quality produce whilst offering value for money. We use a variety of fresh and frozen food with at least one fresh potato and veg each evening. We look forward to welcoming you on your next stay.
