Was amazed at the amount of things that this room had wrong with it:
The bed needed to be put into a skip. It was old and passed its sell by date. The mattress was dirty and occupied by silverfish.
There was a massive hole in the ceiling with a bowl placed underneath which housed a dirty, smelly wet tea towel on top of the wardrobe - more about that later - to catch the upstairs occupants dirty shower water. The owners had thoughtfully disconnected the power supply to the second light switch because the wiring went through the middle of the shower water damaged hole and may have been a tad dangerous.
To get to the sink to wash your hands you had to climb into the mould ridden shower.
To close the door into the toilet and shower we had to put our fingers through the louvre door lats to pull the door to in order to preserve our dignity. There was no door handle on the inside or lock to use. For health and safety reasons the exposed screw had been tastefully covered with packing tape.
Back to the hole in the celing. This became fondly known as our wake up call due to the noise of water dripping into the bowl every morning. The wardrobe rail was only able to take the weight of 2 or 3 shirts due to stability issues caused by lack of fixings. Thankfully due to the efficiency of the staff the bowl never overflowed and ruined what few items could be safely stored in the wardrobe.
The carpet was suffering from age related problems, was dirty and sticky with black shiny patches and a retro 70's theme going on.
Fire safety rules were simple, the escape was literally a ladder up to the window, which unfortunately only opened about 3 inches.
The entertainment facilities were provided by Sky, if you had brought your own viewing card and were able to lipread as there was no volume on the tv. This was just as well as the constant drone from the generator/cooler outside the bedroom window was deafening all through the night and earplugs had to be worn in order to sleep at all.
On a positive note breakfast was ok.

This has to be the worst place I have ever stayed. If you like sticky carpets, furniture out of a skip Very loud karaoke to 1am in the morning and 3 TV channels then this is the place for you. I would not recommend booking in here unless you are lager lout who singer badly and likes to wake up with a sore back from a buggered mattress. Very nice location as great views of the harbour. Parking is find a place in the streets (make sure it not metered) and leave it do not move it unless you wish to spend another hour later driving round to find one.

Went with group of friends over new year. Booked here as other places booked up. Room 6 in the attic, tiny, freezing most of the time although radiator was on. Wallpaper falling off walls due to damp, draught blowing through windows, paper thin walls. Although clean sheets on bed found "pubes" on them! There for 3 nights bed not made, no change of towels. Tea/coffee cups replaced with clean once. Bathroom even smaller, with tiny shower cubicle (so little pressure to shower that I couldn't wash my hair). No hot water in sink. Again not cleaned whilst we were there. Craftily they insist you pay the full amount in cash when you arrive. The only plus I would give was the beakfast was decent. But that is the only decent thing I could say about the place. The staff also seem to have a couldn't care attitude. They refused to make beakfast on new years day due to working new years eve!!! even tho' we had paid for it. Had it not been new year we would have gone elsewhere. It is the worst place we have ever stayed in. Whitby is a great place and we had another brilliant new year there, so we didn't let it spoil our berak.

Stayed overnight with friends, received a friendly greeting, rooms were clean and warm with en-suite facilities. Nice quiet location overlooking the River but close enough to the town centre facilities.Enjoyed the atmosphere in the bar on the evening with entertainment also being provided. Would recommend to friends and certainly stay again.

This was quite literally the WORST 2 hours i have ever spent ina so called b and b/hotel. My partner and i were looking for somewhere relatively cheap to spend the night when we came to Whitby to celebrate our anniversary. We had booked a meal at the moon and sixpence (which is amazing btw). The middle earth certainly was cheap but unfortunately also the most grim place i have ever been. We decided to go to our room at around 6pm to relax and get changed before we went for our meal. The TV reception in the room wasn't working but i can live with that. The temperature in the room was almost certainly somewhere below freezing (it was colder in our room than it was outside) my partner went downstairs several times to ask if they could put the heating on and the only response we got was "Oh it takes a while to reach that side of the building." After getting this response three times in the space of nearly 2 hours we booked ourselves into Bagdale Hale Lodge and told them we were leaving. The girl behind the bar didn't look even slightly concerned so i wasn't going to lose sleep over it.

The walls/ceiling/floors are also paper thin as while we were shivering and fiddling about with the radiator the people in the bar treated us to a non stop looped rendition of Razorlight's In the morning, which we could hear as clearly as if they were in our room. It wouldn't have been too bad if they had known a few more of the lyrics other than "In the morning you know you won't remember a thing...in the morning you know you won't remember a thing...in the morning you know you won't remember a thing...in the morning you know you won't remember a thing." Sit in your freezer, repeat that for two hours and you'll know how i felt!

my late wife and i stayed here on our honeymoon, and again on our first anniversary.
2006,,2007, i can honestly say, we enjoyed our time there very much. The owners were so friendly and welcoming, and nothing was too much trouble for them. Rooms are basic, but comfortable with everything provided. The breakfast, full english, was 100% served overlooking the marina.
Staff are very pleasant and you can enjoy the local pub atmosphere downstairs. Great location for sight seeing. Will definately return.
