We included this as part of our early morning runs - best time to do them as they can get busy later!
But seriously - they do get very busy. Great views form the top

Allegedly the 199 steps were used as a test of Christian faith to those who wished to worship in St Mary’s Church. Climbing the steps would prove that you were faithful. Christians are mental.

Anyway, it’s a nice wander up and the view from the top is beautiful!

This is such an historic pathway, it’s a must-do when in Whitby. The Church at the top is well worth a visit and, of course, you also have the Abbey. There are many benches you can stop and rest if you find it too much in one go and, as the views are amazing, it’s worth sitting for a while to take it all in.

What a way to get up to the top!!!! had to rest a few times but glad we did it. Love going to Whitby especially the old cobbled streets.

Well worth doing for the views of the sea and also of the rooftops of Whitby which are fascinating. And of course it is a way of getting to the church on the hill, well worth a visit and the Abbey complex.

You certainly need to be sure-footed with good balance to attempt these steps safely.
