We arrived on a Friday night wanting to get some sleep before my husband and his friends had a very early (5 o clock) start to do the 3 peaks. No chance! A very loud bar was directly beneath the room and after the bar closed we had louts screaming and shouting at each other til about 1.30 in the morning outside our window.

The room is in need of decorating with stains on the carpet and walls. The ensuite bathroom has a saniflo type toilet which stinks when it is flushed and the shower has doors with a 12 inch gap to squeeze into and is so small that you bang your head on the side when you wash your feet.

The vegetarian breakfast was just a normal cooked breakfast minus the meat, No extra mushrooms or tomatoes to make the amount up. Half a mushroom, half a tomato, an egg, beans and half a slice of fried bread, not impressed.

I think £80 a night is too much, it is more like a £50 a night room. If they want people to stay here and enjoy it they need to insulate the floors to keep out the noise, put secondary glazing to keep the noise from the street out and maybe get rid of the louts hanging around outside at the end of the night.

The only good things were the bed was comfortable and the bar staff were friendly.

It seems that this rather shabby – but still comfortable – old-fashioned hotel prioritises the profits from its bar ahead of the comfort of its resident guests. On our first night, the noise from a 'Cowboys and Indians' evening was clearly audible in our room. It went on until after midnight, making sleep impossible. Afterwards the racket relocated to the street outside and continued until after 1.00am. Double-glazing would help with the external din, but then the plumbing is noisy too...
On our second night there was a crowd in the bar but no band, so sleep was possible.

A good inn/hotel - fine ales and ambience with good food.
Unfortunately, our two night stay (in room 10) was spoilt by louts (I estimate about twenty of them) leaving the bar and standing around outside until one thirty in the morning. Their behaviour could be compared to a classroom full of drunken 17-19 year olds with no decorum or common sense. I have to say that this is by far the noisiest hotel I have stayed in and I spend half of my life travelling and staying in hotels all around the world. I do plan on returning but it will not be as a resident unless I wish to be kept awake!
This problem takes my rating down from 4 to 1.

The bed and communal rooms are pleasant. The staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. The rates are reasonable, and the food choice and quality good. Close to the shops, tourist information, bus stops and station. The building and some of the rooms require investment. Avoid bedrooms facing the street Sunday to Friday nights, as noisy quarry traffic starts at 0500. Overall, liked by every one of the thirteen people in our party.

My wife and I found this hotel to be very nice, we had a large room, with en suite. It was nicely decorated, warm, and clean. The staff were friendly and happy to give advice on the local area.

The hotel has a grand staircase, and the interior has been nicely decorated, retaining the original features. Separate bar, lounge, and restrauant areas. Nice food and a good range of cask and real ales.

Easy to find just a few minutes walk from Settle railway station. We'll be returning in 2009.
